591.0. "Cabot Market Letter" by DABEAN::NEARY (Bob Neary) Fri Oct 15 1993 15:35

    re 587.3

I occasionally read Cabot Market Letter at Andover Library.
I was there on Tuesday to read the latest issue. He recommended selling
a few stocks and buying others. My question is this:
Does this guy have enough readership/influence to push stocks up like
I've seen this week. Last week he said to buy a stock. I checked in
Barron's and it's up 6 for the week. On Wednesday's hotline he said to
buy another stock - it was up 5 on the day ! Is this coincidence ?
Has he got so many readers that THEY drive up the price ? Is he lucky ?
Any opinions of his long term readers who may be out there?

P.S. I'd mention the stocks but I don't know if it's legal to repeat
advisor advice. Moderator, is it OK to name stocks ?

Unless you've signed a written agreement that prohibits you
from doing so, it's legal. Seeing the financial press (NBR,
IBD, discount brokers monthly pamplet [like Waterhouse's
"Individual Investor"]) often quotes direct from these investment
advisors newsletters, I wouldn't worry about giving away any
secrets. To the contrary, these investment advisors seem
to relish in being quoted as when the stocks do do well it
increases their name recognition and brings in more business.
591.3SEC is investigating2155::michaudJeff Michaud - ObjectBrokerFri Jun 07 1996 02:1733
In case anyone hasn't heard yet, the Cabot Market Letter
is being investigated by the SEC in regards to one particular
stock. The SEC is going as far back as 1994 to see the
comments made by Cabot for Presstek (PRST). Since the news
broke this stock is coming down even faster than it has
gone up (and it's been going strong with several splits
over the last 2 years). Given the very high P/E for this
stock I wouldn't be surprised if something is fishy here.
Interestingly if you compute the P/E based on the 52 week
high (which I think was within the last month) and the
	quoted EPS you get 666....

NBR also reported on another Cabot recommended stock
taking a hit today (Zoltek) even though there was no
news specifically about this stock. If I was holding
any stock right now that is up mainly on Cabot's recomendation
	I'd be watching closely ....

591.4PRST up sharply last couple of days2155::michaudJeff Michaud - ObjectBrokerMon Jun 24 1996 17:3713
The last couple days Presstek has been rallying strongly after
almost reaching it's 52 week low. Anyone heard an update on the SEC
	investigation?

That bid/ask spread is still NASDAQ highway robbery!

Well the Cabot Letter is involved in yet another troubled stock.
I can't recall the name of the stock right now, but the stock went
from a high of $55 all the way down to $2. The company had to
or will be restating earnings for the last X number of quarters,
in the down direction. The president of this company has resigned,
and there is talk of stock manipulation.

	I can't get to http://www.cabotm.com/ right now (I can't get to
anything outside Digital right now, immediate failures of
network unreachable) to find the name of that stock, but if
anyone here watches NBR you'll know the one I'm talking about.

Yup, that was it! Here's the current stock quote, actually
up 25% today! I wonder what the bid/ask spread was however ...

Nice P/E, but of course that's based on earnings that will be
	getting restated :-)

This weekends paper had a whole article on the President/CEO.
Last name is Pinez can't remember the first name. He was arrested by
the FBI on 2/14 and charged with insider trading for now. He was denied
bail because he was born in Palestine and has an Israel passport. Plus,
    his wife lives in Switzerland.
