CARY, NC--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- SAS Institute Inc.,
the leading provider of business decision-making software, today
announced the availability of Orlando II, a new version of SAS.
software. New features in the suite of information delivery tools
expand the robust SAS OLAP, data warehousing, reporting and Web
capabilities. This release provides IT with fast, powerful and easy to
maintain software, enabling their business users to look at multiple
relationships within data, regardless of where it resides. This
release includes a multidimensional database to enable better decision
making.

"Today, IT users need a comprehensive architecture that includes
quality and reach for easy end user consumption," said Howard Dresner,
Gartner Group Research Director. (NOTE: Editors may contact Mr.
Dresner at: 603-316-1222) With Orlando II, SAS Institute has expanded
its powerful decision support architecture to the Web, and enhanced
its ability to meet the needs of both IT and business users. According
to SAS Institute President and CEO, Jim Goodnight, "We are giving our
customers the capability to fully leverage investments in existing
software. With Orlando II, we are helping our customers succeed in
integrating decision support applications for any environment,
including the Web."

"The new multidimensional database (MDDB) assists IT in providing its
customers a really fast, easy way to look at multiple relationships in
data," said Mark Moorman, SAS Institute program manager for Business
Intelligence. "MDDBs can deal effectively with large quantities of
data, improving query performance. OLAPs application style offers
high-performance access to large amounts of summarized data for
complex multidimensional analysis and easy reporting. The SAS solution
is a fast multi-dimensional engine that sits on top of the relational
data warehouse."

Orlando II also assists IT by offering lower operating costs and
broader exposure. The Web-enabled MDDB will offer fast, flexible data
summarizations, analyses, and reporting capabilities so business users
throughout an organization can identify and track trends for strategic
decision making. For IT, the MDDB takes advantage of work already done
in the data warehouse. Because MDDBs service OLAP applications ONLY,
they offer business users the opportunity for easier, more flexible
data analysis -- leading to more valuable and timely information. The
goal of OLAP, multidimensional data analysis, is to provide fast,
flexible data summarizations, analyses, and reporting capabilities
with the ability to view trends over time.

Orlando II enhances the existing reporting objects included in the
software, and adds two new reporting objects -- for graphically
analyzing multidimensional data, and for 3D business graphics, to help
reduce the requests for IT to develop ad hoc reports. "Placed in the
hands of business users, these tools allow them to explore
relationships in their data easily, without the hassle and confusion
of complicated coding," Moorman said.

SAS Institute Inc. also has enhanced its acclaimed data warehousing
capabilities by adding a MDDB to its family of business intelligence
tools. Orlando II extends the DW strategy because of the MDDB's
ability to be built and maintained by the data warehouse tools, its
reach through to amortize investments in DW structures, its
integration with metadata, and its ability to work within DW
architectures.

Now in its 21st anniversary year, SAS Institute is the world's ninth
largest independent software company. The Institute's success is due
in part to its continued investment in R&D, $209 million in 1996, and
more than $1 billion since its formation. This commitment to customer
solution oriented R&D has resulted in the Institute being awarded the
reader-selected 1996and 1997 Datamation magazine Data Warehousing
Product of the Year, the 1996 DM Review magazine World Class Solutions
for Data Warehousing award (for Outstanding Service & Decision Support
tools), the Data Warehouse World Excellence in Business Information
award (customer service), and other industry honors.

SAS Institute delivers an integrated suite of information delivery
software for business decision making that addresses the unique needs
of business users and IT departments in their support of the
businesses. SAS software includes capabilities and tools for data
warehousing including managing, organizing and exploiting the
warehouse; business intelligence including EIS, online analytical
processing, application development and decision support; applied
analysis including technical data analysis, data mining and neural
networking. SAS Institute also delivers business solutions software
for applications such as financial consolidation and reporting,
clinical trials analysis, and IT service management. Currently, SAS

IT managers name SAS Institute data warehousing "Product of the Year" - 2nd
consecutive year

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

CARY, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- The ballots are in and
have been counted. "For the second year in a row, readers of Datamation
Magazine have chosen one of SAS Institute's products as their favorite data
warehousing product," said Ellen Greenblatt, Datamation Assistant Editor.
"Datamation readers overwhelmingly selected SAS Institute's SAS/Warehouse
Administrator(TM) because the software provides a single point of control
for data warehouse and data mart administrators and can be used with SAS
and non-SAS databases."

According to Datamation Magazine, "It handles the entire process from
beginning to end, including extracting data by the instructions stored in
the metadata, generating the code, and scheduling jobs. It provides a
comprehensive set of decision support applications including query, general
reporting, and OLAP. The SAS/Warehouse Administrator is open and flexible;
it will work on any database you have already committed to using, on any
platform." Runners-up in the Data Warehousing category, as announced by
Datamation, included IBM, Visual Warehouse for NT 2.1; Cognos, PowerPlay
5.0; Red Brick Systems, Red Brick Warehouse 5.0; and Information Builders,
FOCUS Fusion.

IT managers and professionals also echoed the findings of Datamation, "We
were able to design, organize, structure and develop a data warehouse in
about a month using the SAS/Warehouse Administrator," said Emily Liles,
Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company computer applications consultant. "We were
able to use the product as a tool to help us document a new business rule
and get the business unit to agree upon it."

Industry analysts from Meta Group and the Patricia Seybold Group also gave
SAS/Warehouse Administrator high marks. "With the release of the warehouse
product, SAS Institute should be on the short list for those people who are
looking to have the operational framework to help manage the complexity of
the data warehouse project," said Aaron Zornes, The Meta Group. "This will
be a major breakthrough for SAS and make SAS more than just a toolkit for
the power user. It will make SAS a solution that any company and any IT
group within large corporations can use to build an enterprise data
warehouse architecture," said Wayne Eckerson, Patricia Seybold Group.

"The SAS/Warehouse Administrator meets the needs of Data Warehouse
Administrators (DWAs) for rapid warehouse construction and centralized
warehouse management," said Jim Davis, Program Manager for Data
Warehousing, SAS Institute. "It is designed to extend the existing tools in
SAS. software for building and managing data warehouses and data marts; it
enables rapid warehouse construction." SAS/Warehouse Administrator provides
a metadata management and organization layer to the existing components in
SAS software to speed building data warehouses. As the warehouse is
defined, metadata describing warehouse entities and relationships is
automatically generated and maintained.

SAS/Warehouse Administrator is SAS Institute's packaging of an integrated
tool set for building data warehouses. It includes accessing operational
data sources, extracting/transforming operational data into warehouse
target files, loading or populating the data, and summarizing detail data,
creating data marts, and creating multidimensional summary objects. The
SAS/Warehouse Administrator is open and flexible, generating program logic,
as well as registering existing programs - whether or not they use SAS
program logic. It lets you add your own programs, such as COBOL, to the
warehouse. With its strong data access, data management, data analysis, and
data presentation capabilities, SAS software has been a viable data
warehouse tool for many years. Now, SAS Institute is providing new IT tools
and interfaces for metadata management, process automation, data warehouse
organization, and data transformation. Companies already using the
SAS/Warehouse Administrator to build and/or manage data warehouses include:
Robert Plan Insurance, Goodyear Tire, Pacific Bell, Dun & Bradstreet,
Genentech, U.S. Census Bureau, Merrill Lynch, Brown & Williamson, Keystone
Data, Farm Credit, and others.

Now in its 21st year in business, SAS Institute is the world's ninth
largest independent software company. The Institute's success is due in
part to its continued investment in R&D, $209 million in 1996, and more
than $1 billion since its formation. This commitment to customer solution
oriented R&D has resulted in the Institute being awarded the
reader-selected 1996 and 1997 Datamation magazine Data Warehousing Product
of the Year, the 1996 DM Review magazine World Class Solutions for Data
Warehousing award (for Outstanding Service & Decision Support tools), the
Data Warehouse World `Excellence in Business Information' award (customer
service), and other industry honors.

for business decision making that addresses the unique needs of business
users and IT departments in their support of the businesses. SAS software

As sales of SAS data warehousing products increase on Microsoft SQL Server
and Windows NT

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: Monday, May 19, 1997

CARY, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. --

SAS Institute Joins Microsoft Data Warehouse Alliance

SAS Institute Inc. today announced that it will participate in the
Microsoft Alliance for Data Warehousing. A recognized leader in data
warehousing, SAS Institute has supported Windows NT since 1993. SAS
Institute offers an open, end-to-end solution that leverages a customer's
existing investment in technology and resources, and enables better
business decision making.

"Given our history of success in implementing data warehouses in the large
enterprise marketplace, we are excited about our participation in the
alliance and the potential to work more closely with Microsoft to drive
data warehousing standards that will benefit our mutual customers," said
Joanna D'Aquanni, SAS Institute's Microsoft Alliance Manager. "In the past
year, we've noticed a marked increase in the sales for Windows NT (300
percent) and SQL Server (30 percent) for data marts and decision support
servers in various business units. In conversations with IT managers at our
large customer sites, many of them are using the robustness and scalability
of SAS(R) software to exploit NT and SQL Server as they make further
inroads into the enterprise. The Alliance will enable SAS Institute to more
quickly support future NT technologies, which in turn will enable our
customers to better leverage their investments in this environment."

Jim Davis, SAS Institute's program manager for data warehousing, adds, "SAS
Institute strives to create an open computing environment, letting
customers choose the most appropriate platform and data store for their
enterprise data warehouse and data exploitation. Windows NT Server is a
natural platform for middle tier, departmental applications, in particular
data marts. With the mounting demand for enterprise applications on Windows
NT Server, and the need to integrate NT with legacy systems, SAS software
facilitates and empowers NT implementation."

SAS(R) Institute - winner two years in a row of Datamation magazine's
Product of the Year award for data warehousing - and industry leader in
data mining and business intelligence solutions, will work within the
Microsoft Alliance for Data Warehousing to meet the needs of customers for
data warehousing and advanced decision support.

Other SAS software products that address decision support customer needs in
data warehouse implementations include user access tools for database
queries, multidimensional analysis and client access (OLAP), and a data
mining solution. SAS Institute will be seeking Microsoft BackOffice
certification in the second quarter of 1997.

Now in its 21st year, SAS Institute is one of the top ten largest
independent software vendors in the world, and is the largest privately
held software company. The Institute's success is due in part to its
continued investment in R&D - $209 million in 1996, and more than $1
billion since its formation. This commitment to customer solution-oriented
R&D has resulted in the Institute being awarded the reader- selected 1996
and 1997 Datamation magazine Data Warehousing Product of the Year, the 1996

64-bit AlphaServer Very Large Memory Solution for Windows NT
  Server
Digital, Microsoft, and SAS Institute, Inc. are demonstrating
the new level of desktop-to-data center scalability and
business productivity provided by Digital's 64-bit very large
memory (VLM64) technology when used in applications such as
data warehousing. This demonstration spotlights the superior
scalability and performance benefits made possible by the
combination of 64-bit AlphaServer 8400 enterprise systems -
the world's fastest Windows NT platform - with X86-based
Digital Prioris servers, Windows NT Server 5.0 beta with
64-bit support, Microsoft SQL Server "Sphinx" database, and
the SAS system for data mining and decision support.

By running a complex decision support query on two identical
systems, one with 2 GB and the other with 8 GB of memory, this
demonstration spotlights a 17-to-1 performance scaling
advantage users can achieve with Digital's VLM64 technology.
This performance advantage translates directly into faster,
better informed decisions that can have bottom-line impact on
business success. Microsoft has announced it will make 64-bit
support available with Windows NT Server 5.0 first for the
Alpha platform from Digital, the pioneer in providing
                customers enterprise-scale, 64-bit computing solutions.
