591.0. "Western Riding Instruction" by STAR::NAMOGLU () Tue Jul 28 1987 13:21

    Cindy,

    	There is also a place in Brookline NH that teaches Western on
    their own horses. It is Freewinds Farm and is owned/run by Laurie
    MacDonald. Their number is 603-673-7040. I have not taken lessons
    here, but I do know that they teach western.

    Be patient...

    Laurie is the New England Pinto Horse Association Queen this year
    and is representing New England at the Nationals in the mid west.
    She probably won't be back until Aug 3 or so. Her mother works,
    and you've probably just missed the other folks I know who live
    there.

    I live in Upton and currently board my horse at Eagle Rock Stables
    in Grafton (RT. 30 West) to Rt. 122 South. They mostly teach English -
    hunt seat and dressage, but there's an instructor, Debbie, who does
    teach both English and Western.
    As far as a commute, from Westboro center, it takes me approx.
    15 minutes or less to get to the stable.
    If your interested in more information, give me a call at (DTN) 264-5086.
                                                     Cindy
    P.S. They also have trail rides.

    Thanks everyone for the info, but i took Sherry's advice(note 264.13)
    and called Freewind Farms in Brookline. Laurie is an excellent
    trainer and she's only 15 min. away from home. I also am much happier
    taking western lessons than english (nothing against english it's
    just me). Thanks again for all your help.
591.6Try Summitwynds FarmPOOL::MURPHYIs it Friday yet?Wed Jul 27 1988 18:0111
    Michele,

    Not sure what name of town is (think it's Rowley, MA?) but the
    Summitwynds Farm (owned by Whit Parker) teaches the Monte Foreman
    method of riding which I understand is the western natural seat.
    If you're not familiar with the Monte Foreman saddle, it was made
    without the high gullet and is instead level. You might want to
    give them a call anyway. Information must have a listing.

     They advertise co-op boarding at the tack shop I go to,
     I don't know what the situation about lessons is, though.

    SUMMITWYNDS is not in Hubbarston, it is in Holden. They were always
    one of "the" places to take lessons when I was growing up in Holden,
    but that was several years ago... don't know what it's like now.

591.35Western TrainerSEQUEL::GREGGThu Jul 28 1988 18:5013
    I am looking for a Western Trainer in the Grafton, Ma. Area.

    Does anyone know of a trainer that has resonable prices and is willing
    to come out to my home?

    One 4 year old Morgan Gelding and One 3 year old QH-Morgan Mare.
    Gelding has had soon trainer - Mare has had only ground training
    on lung and in hand only. (No long line)
    Both around 14+ hands right now and still growing.
    Mannors are good but patience is needed with the mare. (She likes
    to move around when grooming)

591.36Jay Lin'sBOEHM::SCHLENERFri Jul 29 1988 19:357
    Someone at my old barn, Eagle Rock Stables - Rt. 122 Grafton, was
    interested in training her horse western. So she went to Jay Lin's
    (spelling?) in Northbridge (or Whitinsville - I always get those
    2 towns confused). He specializes in paints and also western training.
    From what I understand, he did an excellent job on her horse.

		I take Western lessons in Chester, NH at Twin Oaks
	Quarter Horses. Vicky Anderson is a superior trainer. It's about
	an hour from Maynard (495N-93N-exit 4/Rt 102 east-take left at the
	third light-about half mile down road on the left). We are
	preparing for some upcoming Western competitions (The Greater
	Manchester Horse Show is in Deefield on Saturday 27-May-1989).
        You dont' have to own your own horse to take lessons, Vicky has
	very well trained show horses for different riding abilities
	that you can use! There are also some quality quarter horses
	for sale.

591.21Western Trail riding "Lessons"DECXPS::ZBROWNFri Mar 23 1990 15:4119

    	Hi All-

    	I have looked and looked through the lessons notes
    	and haven't been able to find a person or stable that
    	teaches just basic western lessons. I have a few friends
    	that are interested in trail riding but want to also enjoy
    	them self doing it...:-) They have gone to a few stables
    	that I suggested but they only offer Hunt-seat, and are geared
    	more for the competive rider then just plan riding, plus the $ is
    	quite expensive... All they want is someone to teach them the
    	basics from the beginning, Ground up and then go from there.
    	So does anyone know of someone? These people are in the
    	Salem, Pelham N.H. area and one in Andover Ma area.

    	Thank you very much for any replys!

    	Zina
591.22Lingham's?CARTUN::MISTOVICHFri Mar 23 1990 15:509
    The only western place I know of is Pat Lingham's in Littleton,
    MA. They just put in a big new facility and I believe have a
    well-known quarterhorse type professional running it. I imagine they
    offer lessons there now, but don't know for sure. They are located
    at 119 and 495, across the street and down a little ways (towards
    Groton) from the new Digital facility. I don't know what the charge
    for lessons is (assuming they offer them).

    I believe there is a few places in the Rowley, MA area that
    teach western. I saw some of these named in an ad in the
    Pedlar. Sorry, cannot remember the stable names at this time,
    but if I see them agian, I'll post them.

    I'm also interested in anyplace in the
    Maynard/Acton/Sudbury/Littleton/Boxboro area that provides Western
    style lessons.

    I just had my first three lessons while I was vacationing in Florida
    and I loved it. Would hate to have to wait until I go back to Florida
    to ride some more.

    Rates were $27.50/hour. Is that high, low, average? I have nothing to
    compare against.

    I work in Maynard, and would love to find a place close enough that I
    could ride during lunch  (wishes.....)

    Thanks.

591.28Bobby's ranchREGENT::WIMBERGFri Mar 01 1991 19:0710

    Bobbie's ranch in Acton - near the Nagog Mall - offers riding lessons
    in adition to trail rides. I didn't know they did until some friends
    of mine (who are preparing for a trip to a dude ranch) started taking
    lessons there.

    That would be a 20 minute drive (many longer) from Maynard.

    Just discovered this notes file...YES!

    I'm a transplanted Texan, now in Tewksbury, MA. Haven't ridden
    in, let's say, over a decade...since I was a teenager. I'd love
    to go for classes. Would love to lease till I know how to
    purchase, but this southwesterner wants to go back to her roots.
    I'd feel best at starting as a beginner, am close to southern NH,
    but cannot have a horse on my property till 1995 (long story).

    Thank you in advance

I have a friend who has recently moved here from Denver where he learned to ride
Western style and did some cutting and reining. He has recently moved here and
really wants to continue with riding.

Can anyone recommend some places to investigate? The names and/or locations of
trainers or farms that specialize in western riding would be a great help.

	Thanks,

So far I have:

Meadow View Farms - East Broadway - Haverill MA. - wendy o', I assume this is the
                                                   place you were referring to.

J-Lin Acres  I have a phone#, I just don't know where it is :-)

Pond Hill Ranch in Castleton VT

Peter Boyle Sr - I am hoping that he can help point me in the right direction.

What is the name of Tom McDowell's farm? Is he a trainer?

Also, is there some sort of American Amateur Cutting Association or something?

Thanks for all of the help!
