601.0. "Riding Lessons Wanted (English)" by QUIFF::SCHLENER () Wed May 25 1988 19:57

Well, I finally have decided to start training once again. I'm looking
for an instructor who is at the expert level so that she/he will
be able to fine tune my riding. I've been riding for a total of
8 years with the past 3 years on my own horse. Unfortunately, I
haven't been able to take lessons for the past 2 years and I'm only
looking at one lesson a month for now.
I'm at the stage where I consider myself an intermediate rider
and am looking for more work in dressage, hunt-seat, and X-country.
I already know some basics in dressage, both collecting and flexing
my horse off my leg, and work Jasper over 2-1/2 ft. fences.
I'm not looking for an instructor who is at my level or
just above that. Instead I want someone who can analyze my riding
and inform me that I'm sitting behind the motion, I'm not centered,
or my back is a bit stiff.
I'm also looking for a stable which has good school horses
(intermediate to expert) since I don't want to be schooling them
but me. Plus I want someplace which has a good hunt course and
    possibly a small X-country course.
    	Am I asking too much?

I figure that since I'm only taking a lesson once a month, that
I can afford to go to a very good stable.
    Now for the location.
I live in Phillipston Ma. but will drive up to 1/2 hour (if I really...
have to) to get to the stable. I had heard something about a stable
in Princeton, but have no info on it.
Also, reading a prior note, someone mentioned a Brasshead Farm in
Winchendon. Has anyone heard of it?

    Hello!

I am looking for a place that I might be able to take lessons
and also ride on my own if possible. I have taken lessons last
year at the advanced beginner and beginning intermediate level
at the Univ. of New Hampshire. Previous to that (about 10 years
previous) I had gone to horse camp, taken lessons, and also
cleaned stalls in exchange for riding. I have great hopes of one
day owning a horse so I am looking for someplace that I can learn
more than just how to ride. I do know how to groom the horse, take
care of equipment, and clean stalls. Oh, I have also competed in
some dressage shows and have jumped before.

If anyone could point me in the right direction I would much
appreciate it because I love horses.

                                             Thanks,
                                               Terri

WHOOPS! Sorry about that! I live in Nashua off of 111A. I would
like someplace fairly near by so that I could go after work.
601.11Pony Farm Riding ClubBAGELS::COCHRANEFri Aug 07 1987 19:5945
I've been meaning to respond to your request for quite some time but
have been out of the country for a while. I don't know if it's too
late, but here's some information about a riding program in Southern New
Hampshire.

The Pony Farm in Temple, NH has a riding club, which is geared toward
adults and children who want to learn to ride and don't own a horse.
Riding lessons at all skill levels are available 'combining the enduring
principles of English riding and jumping with state of the art Balanced
Seat methods'. You get six hours of riding each week broken into two
sessions.

(I'm quoting from the booklet here) 'During one of the three
hour sessions, time will be spent grooming, tacking-up, and preparing
for a full hour of instruction in a semi-private lesson at your own
ability level. Each full lesson will include careful metered individual
attention, feedback to the instructors, personal assistance, and
step-by-step discussions with your instructor on all aspects of the
program and your personal progress.

The second weekly session is for honing your skills, using the
full range of facilities, or perhaps a quiet ride down some of our miles
of dirt roads and trails.

During both sessions these will be ample time to just enjoy being with
your horse while brushing, letting it graze in a green field, or just
cooling out after a ride.'

Riding club activities planned for this coming year:

Fall foliage breakfast ride
Mock fox hunt
Clinics with guest instructors *
Invitational horse shows *
Trip to the National Horse Show in New York City*
Christmas caroling on horseback
Lectures by recognized experts
Springtime moonlight ride

	* Additional fee

If you are interested please let me know and I can send you a copy of
the booklet.

Brass Head Farm was probably mentioned by Jan Bennett. She took
lessons there and may still be doing so. You may be able to find
her node on ELF and send her mail. I can't remember it. She
    works at the Westminster Plant.

601.3Hunt seat in Princeton?BOEHM::SCHLENERThu May 26 1988 19:455
Does anyone know of a good hunt seat/X-country instructor and stable
in the Princeton/Hubbardston area? As RE .1 stated, Mountain Farms
    sounds like it's purely dressage.

There is a farm in, I think, Sterling called Miles End Farm. Seems
like a nice facility but I really don't know much about it myself.

Another farm you could try is Hulicks which I believe is also in
the Sterling area. Maybe another noter would have their phone
    number.

601.5more on BrassheadVOLGA::J_BENNETTJanice Bennett DTN 241-3522Fri May 27 1988 16:0316
I took lesson's from Brasshead about a year or so ago before concentrating
specifically on dressage. The instructor, Janet, is an excellent rider and
has degree/certificate for instruction. Janet is one of the few instructors
I felt comfortable with - (and I've taken ALOT of lessons from ALOT of
different instructors) ie: her methods work, the lessons are run efficiently
and effectively (I took private) and horses are well taken care of. One thing
I was thankful for was her "common sense" approach to riding with no gimmicks.
While I was riding there, I concentrated on jumping and huntseat equitation.
There is an indoor arena which is a good size, and I've heard that an outdoor
is getting finished. Karen Porter (from this notesfile) also used to give
lessons there, and you may want to check with her, also.

Good luck,

	Janice

601.8Princeton, anyone?BOEHM::SCHLENERMon Jun 06 1988 13:2212
Does anyone know of a stable in Princeton. A friend of mine said
that she had heard of a good stable in Princeton which had several
    good instructors.
I was talking with someone who leases a horse at Miles End and she
(you notice how many women ride horses but rarely any men!) said
that the intermediate/expert instructor , Mitch, is mostly concerned
with jumping and that his flat work is good but not spectacular.
I was hoping that the stable in Princeton (where ever it is) would
have both a dressage and jumping instructor so that I could alternate
    my lessons.

601.17Rentals and Lessons requestDELI::GREENAWAYTue Apr 11 1989 16:4324
    I'n looking for two things, both in the North Shore;

    1. A horse rental farm for hourly hacks?

    2. A good riding school for lessons and perqs.

For the Hack or trek, western will do, but in both categories I
prefer English. I also have done quite a bit of jumping, some
hunter trials and a few point to points, so the more jumps the
better. A cross country jumping course would be great.

    Cheers,
    Paul

PS. If you're a very good rider, like cross country courses with
many varieties of jumps, and like to go on riding vacations,
then I can recommend just the place for you. Castle Leslie
Equestrian club in Co. Monaghan, Ireland. Just south of the
Armagh border. Let me know if there's any interest and I'll
         post further details.

Hi! I'm looking for a place to take lessons somewhere in the vacinity
of Sudbury (Acton, Stow, Maynard, Lexington, Bedford, Concord...all
good areas for me to go to...plus towns next to those too)...

I have the equivalent of 1 year's riding experience as far as lessons
go...I am pretty fair at English and Western both.

If you know of a place near by that gives instruction at night or
on weekends...I would appreciate any info.

Also, any place to go riding for a day? I just found out about
Bobby's Ranch in Acton yesterday...(I drove by it with a friend
and we spotted all the horses through the trees near the Rusty Scupper.
:-) Riding with a guide is OK...I just want to find a place that
takes good care of their animals and the animals are loved and well
    trained.

    Thanks for any help!

Pegasus Farm, Power Rd, Westford (across from Nashoba Ski area)
gives lessons at night and on weekends. I'm not sure what their
rates are, it's been a while since I boarded there. Their phone
number is 508-692-7060. They are strictly hunt seat.

Another place to try, though I'm not sure if they have school
horses, is Stepping Out Farm in Littleton on Goldsmith St. I don't
know their phone number. They are another strictly hunt seat barn.

    Hi,

I keep my horse at Evergreen in Southboro, about 3 miles from Marlboro.
The riding instructor gives lessons at night for all levels. Her
rates run from $15 for a group lesson to $25 for a private lesson
(but don't quote me on prices - I've only taken group lessons).
She has a few school horses and uses some of the boarders horses
(with their permission, of course) so what you ride tends to be
better than average. Melody is located on rt 30 now, but will be
moving up to Marlboro at the end of May.

    Her number is (508)481-1550.
601.22MARKER::BUCKLEYI wish it was summertime all year!Thu May 18 1989 14:3814
    Berky, is that you??

Pegasus' lessons were $25/lesson as of last winter (when I rode there).
It wasn't bad, although sometimes there were like 12 riders in the
ring...for example, maybe 2 people excercizing their horse, a couple of
different lesson groups, and maybe one person lunging their horse at
one end, so it could be busy at times.

Kathy Steege at Red Acre Farm in Stow, MA offers lessons for
$20/lesson. She is also very patient with young riders. She teachs
    Hunt Seat equitation.

    Good luck,
    Buck

    Hi,

I'm looking for a place to take English lessons in the evenings
somewhere in the Greater Maynard area. I live in Watertown,
so I don't want to travel too far west. I've been riding for
about eleven years and would describe myself as intermediate.
I'm interested mainly in hunt seat and perhaps some dressage.
I used to ride at Broadacres farm in Sudbury years ago, but I
don't want to return there. I haven't ridden in a year since
I returned to Massachusetts from Washington DC, and really miss
it. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.

The problem is that I will be working Bedford soon and
    Ashland is no longer convenient.

Does anyone know of any stables in the Bedford/Burlington

    Hi,

I have an Appy mare who I ride Hunt/Balance seat. I keep her in
Townsend, MA. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could take
lessons. My last instructor moved. I am very interesed in Dressage,
although I haven't done much of it. I am willing to travel but
not too far. I just started working her over fences and she loves
it, but we need help! I have been riding since I was about 8 years
old, I am now 22 and I have found that the style of riding has changed
alot. I was always taught to sit and "look pretty". We never had
to worry about your horse being "on the bit". It's amazing
what you can get your horse to do by using your seat and legs.
I think Dressage is great! It really gets you to become "one" with
    your horse.

Also, does anyone know of any horse shows in the area? Townsend
is out by the Littelton/Groton area. We show at alot of Fairs but
    I'm not wild about it.

    Thanks,

    Andrea

Stepping Out Farm is hunt seat. They teach, but I'm not certain that
they have school horses. I think they're probably kind of pricey. I
can remember the name of the street (I used to live there, you'd think
I'dknow it!) but its down the road from the Cumberland Farms in
the middle of town. It used to be called Kimloch Farm.

The street name is Goldsmith St. Stepping Out does not have school
horses. However, Discovery Farm located at the same place may be able
to help. Andrea Wells is the trainer at Discovery.

The other option is Pegasus Farm located on the Westford-Acton line
on Powers road, right across the street from the Nashoba Valley

I'm not sure Pegasus is giving lessons anymore. It's been years
since I rode with them (they had a great hunt course) but the last
I heard they had turned into a strictly boarding barn only. It's
    worth a try at least.

Karen McWilliam in Acton is excellent. She does hunt seat, western,
games, etc. for all levels. She focuses on showing - jumping,
shomanship, etc. And her students always pin at the shows. She has
three QH of her own that she uses for lessons at her place (gorgeous
animals for all levels) or she will come to your place and teach
    on your horse.

She will also help you work with younger animals as well. She
was helping me train my three year old before I moved to Colorado
(sort of combined riding lessons/training sessions.)

I don't remember her number off-hand butf you were interested I might
    be able to find it.

Ledgefield Farm in Uxbridge, MA is great for hunt seat, dressage,
and cross country. Wonderful cross design in a large sand arena.

Susan Gornall, and her husband Dr. James Gornall are wonderful,
they will travel and give you lessons. They are serious, dedicated,
and extreamly knowlegeable. Susan was short listed for the Olympic
team (twice I believe). The barn is always immaculate, and the
horses love to be there. James broke my young arabian (his first
arabian to train) and Metrik just loves him. They did a wonderful
job with him. If your interested in first class professional training,
even if you only want to ride better and not show, they are the
ones to go to. Rates are reasonable.

    Hi everyone,

I just moved to Nashua a couple of weeks ago. I have been riding for
four years now. I have competed for the past four years in the IHSA
for Westfield State College Equestrian Team against such schools as
Yale, Smith, Williams, UCONN, Conn College, etc. I would love to
continue taking lessons and would also be interested in possibly
leasing a horse to exercise on a weekly or monthly basis. If anyone
knows of a reputable riding academy (I've been training at the N.
Andover Riding Academy with Jim but that's too far to drive) or has
a horse that needs to be exercised while you're on vacation I'd love
to get involved. I've had alot of experience with some pretty nasty
horses and I'm not afraid of a challenge (In fact I'd love one!) so
anything goes! Thanks for all your help.

I ride at Brindle Ledge Equestrian Center in Goffstown, N.H. Owned and
operated by Mrs. Nacky Loeb, Owned by the Loeb Newspaper Chain. Has a
beautiful indoor lighted ring with 40 attached stalls. Has horses for
beginner as well as more sensitive horses for the more advanced rider.
Not sure if they teach western but do know that they teach English
(Hunt seat). Not sure if they teach dressage.

Lessons are $25. private, $20. Semi, and $15. group. I have had both
instructors and find that one is better than the other in terms of more
experience and willing to work a lot harder with you than the other. I
guess it's due to her manner of teaching that prompts me to rate her
over the other instructor. She doesn't yell yet she is quite forcefull
in her approaches yet she has a great sense of humor. If she finds you
are having trouble understanding what she's saying, she'll stop you right
there and begin working the issue until you understand what she meant.
She'll usually come up with a drill that emphasizes her intent. Once
you understand her, she'll free you up to continue with the session. I
would prefer not to mention names at this point. If you are interested
in her name, send me mail. I would like to mention that if you are
found to have good+ hunting and jumping skills, chances are they'll
invite you to represent the center in a series of horse shows
throughout the region. This is good for someone like myself who
doesn't own a horse of my own but wish to participate in these
    events.

I am really pleased with the schooling horses at Brindle Ledge. They
have recently purchased several new show jumpers of really fine
quality. This may sound like an advertisement but I have ridden at
several stables over the past ten years and with many instructors.
They also have arrangements with owners to rent stall space to use
their show jumpers as schooling horses. This is important because
real fine quality animals are available to the riding students in
    general.

This is the best place so far.

prefer not to give names at this time.

Does anyone know of a good place to take riding lessons in the
Leominster/Fitchburg/Lunenburg or surrounding area?? I've always loved
horses and eventually would like to own one, so I figured a good place

Oh ya...I work in Boxboro so if anyone knows of a good place in this

    Hi,

OK, sorry about this, but my note is not related to the previous
notes, but since my love is dressage, I figured I'd post this note
    here.

8.5 months ago, I had a beautiful baby boy, Taylor. I love
my son and being a mom is fine, but I miss horses and riding so
much right now, I feel that I need something of my own again.

Shortly before having Taylor, I had to give up my horse of 6 years.
(She was a free-lease, but was like 'my horse'.) She found a good
permanent home, which is great, but it leaves me without a horse
    to ride.

I think I thought it would be easy to get back into riding when the
dust had cleared, but I guess I was wrong.

My previous instructor and barn do not have any really good dressage
school horses for me to take lessons on, (or any schooling horses for
that matter), so it has been a struggle to find folks willing to let
me take a lesson or two on thier horses while they are away or if
they're busy or whatever...just a note, I was at this barn for 7
years and am a good rider. I was riding solid 2nd level when I stopped
    (at 7.5 months pregnant).

So, I feel a bit frustrated at this point, I miss riding. My husband
and I cannot afford a horse or board right now, so I will finally get
to what I was aiming at in this note in the first place.

I am looking for a *good* dressage instructor who perhaps has horses/
horse for me to take lessons on, maybe a few days a week. I've had
two horses of my own and have ridden for about 12 years, so I am not
a beginner, although I have only had one lesson since having my
baby, and other than being a bit spaghetti-legged, did ok.

So, if there is anyone who can offer advice, or leads. I don't want
to let riding slip away...and am feeling like I've got to start looking
at places other than my old barn.

By the way, I live in Reading MA....just for logistics.

Thanks in advance for any help.
    Deb

601.49Beginner Rider wants lessons, where?CSSE::THIMOTHEEFri Jun 11 1993 19:5614
    Hello,

I am pretty much still a beginner rider. I have taken lessons off
and on since I was a kid. I would like to start taking lessons again
but am unfamilar with the Acton area. Is there any place around Acton
where I can ride? I live Mattapan, MA (Boston), I guess the closest
stables for me are in Milton but they do not offer the option to
    learn how to jump.

    Any suggestions?

601.50Lessons for an 8 year old?TPSYS::PATERLINEFri Jul 16 1993 12:1327
    Hi!

Recently I vacationed with my family in Austin, Texas. As part
of entertaining my children (and because my hosts children take
lessons) my son was given a riding lesson at a local stable.
I went along to take pictures and pretty much expected the kids
would be put on horses and taught how to start and stop the darn
things - kind of one step beyond going to a Fair and putting your
kid on the pony. Well, I could not have been more wrong. He
rode a little less than an hour out of a two hour lesson. The
majority of the time he was taught how to groom the horse, clean
the hoves before a ride, how to saddle and bridle a horse
properly and how to put the horse back in the stall. I was
impressed with the thoroughness of the instruction! I was very
surprised that they did not let him use reins or stirrups
initially but helped him learn how to balance himself on a
    moving horse (slowly) first.

Well the upshot of this is that my son was impressed too. He now
wants riding lessons and I am prepared to have him taught if
we can find a good reasonable priced place for lessons. I am
not part of the horsey-society set and would prefer to stay away
from the high priced, high society of Lexington and Concord. I
live in Hudson on I495 and was looking for something just west or
    east of 495. Any suggestions?

It's just off Route 85, near the boy scout camp.

I've taken lessons there and gone on trail rides. Very competent
people and very good horses. They teach English/Hunt Seat. Prices
    are $25.00/hour private lesson.

Phone number is (508) 779-2934. Ask for JJ (owner) or Jean

This would be very convenient for you as they are only about 3 miles

601.53Sue Steinhof looking for short and long term barn helpDCEIDL::WILPOLTCarrie Wilpolt, dtn 381-1884Tue Oct 05 1993 14:5625
I've taken a couple lessons recently from Sue Steinhof at Maplewood
in Berlin, MA. As people have posted here in the past, she has some
reasonable school horses, including a few 1st level and up, and she
is not a 'yeller'.
Sue is an FEI rider and a judge (r?).

Anyway, she is in a short term bind for barn help, so if anyone
is interested in a tune-up lesson or whatever, you get a lesson
for a day's work (otherwise costs $40 as of Oct 1, yikes).
(presumable AT maplewood, but I assume you can trailer your horse
there if you don't want to ride a schoolie)
I think she actually needs people THIS saturday and other days
in the short term,
so she said she can be pretty flexible about arrangements...

She also is looking for longer-term full time working students
and has a big write-up that I haven't seen. Presumably it describes
in more detail all the great education you get for all that work...
But don't ask me, I don't know.

Call her at home (sorry, number not with me) or ask for her at
the barn: 508-838-2119(?)

601.54Carlee Howe, 4-Star Farm, Pepperell/Groton area MADCEIDL::WILPOLTCarrie Wilpolt, dtn 381-1884Tue Oct 05 1993 15:2936
I'm not sure why I haven't recommended my instructor before, but
I may as well do it now. This is for the person looking for instruction
in the Nashua area as well as for general interest.

For people at the lower levels of dressage, or just starting out in
any discipline who don't mind a dressage base, Carlee is very good.
I have found that she is not very well known. She was recommended to
me a couple of years ago by a 2nd-3rd level rider who was riding with her
at that time.

She has very few school horses right now, so I don't know how many
more school-horse students she can take, but you can always call.
Expect a few or many longe-line lessons at first. I have been very
impressed with the progress that her total-beginner students have made
in the past year. And if you're a ~1st level rider who wants to find
out why straightness is important, she has a secret-weapon school horse
for that ;^).

I've ridden with several of the lower-level instructors who are
listed in this file who teach in the area from Marlboro up to Nashua,
and Carlee has done more for my riding than any of them so far.
Like most of them, she isn't perfect, either-- I think the pace of the
lessons is a little slow, but that's important for those of us who are
lacking in aerobic conditioning. She usually offers good explanations
without you having to ask, but recently I find I have to be more active
about asking.

She has a small indoor, so you can ride all winter!

                 Carlee Howe, 508-433-9728

She also teaches group lessons on weekends at a place in Andover with
their own school horses (but not the zoo-y place with the bad reputation),
and I think she does more hunt-seat instruction there.

    Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for a place in Central Mass to take riding lessons. I'm
not quite a rank beginner, but close enough! I am interested in
dressage, trail riding, possibly a bit of low jumping. Someplace close

people to take lessons as well as practice during the rest of the week

feel for how far you can and want to go...and she can really motivate
you to get you there. 366-9538 and leave a message.

Sally is very active with New England Pinto and many of her students
are kids who have done real well with the NEPtHA Youth program

who have been equally successful. She incorporates a lot of dressage

Hi,

My wife is an intermediate (inter-to-advanced) hunt seat rider and is
looking for a place to take lessons. She does not own a horse, so
she would need somewhere that she could use a schoolie or lease one.
We live in Wrentham, MA and she's willing to drive up to one hour for

I printed out the previous 57 (wow...) replies for her to look over.
Any more places closer to Wrentham?

info on that barn/instructors?

Has anyone ever heard of 'RS Sport Horse' in Andover Mass? I was given

I've been into distance riding the past several years so I tend to
ride in a more 'comfortable' position than a 'proper' one and in
desperate need of someone to tell me how embarassed I would be were
I to enter a show again! Does anyone know if this place is a dressage
barn, eventing barn, hunter, or what? Will I be out of place without
the breeches and boots attire, which I do have but rarely wear and
find uncomfortable? I usually ride in workboots and jeans/chaps. Is

Are there any other places between Worcester and Framingham that would

601.71looking for stable in north/central MA.LJSRV2::SCHLENERFri Mar 15 1996 15:1922
Hi everyone. I'm finally getting back into riding after my horse died
about 5 years ago. My goal is to get back into shape (physically and
riding ability) and then buy a horse.

I'm looking for a good stable in north central Worcester county
(Massachusetts)- preferrably in Petersham through Westminster. I ride
English and was in the process of training my horse to do lead changes.
I'm looking for a barn that has alot of adult riders for companionship.
I want to do training for both x-country eventing (novice level
forever -)...) and do trail rides (love hunter paces). So ideally I would
want a barn that has an on site "intermediate" level instructor available
and also one that has an indoor ring.

I'd also like the barn to have large pastures since I want my horse to
have lots of grass and roaming ability.

Am I asking too much... maybe.
Any suggestions? I'll probably end up compromising but I'm not sure with
what items.
