321.1Some Questions to Help Get You StartedPIXEL::DANIWed Jul 08 1987 14:2524

    It's a gelding right?
    What are his markings?
    What color is he?
    What is his breeding? (What kind of build? heavy, fine?)
    How big is he?
    What are his parents names?
    Is it a show name you're looking for? If so, what
      kind of showing will you be doing? (Don't want to name a dressage
      horse Buck'in Bronc, but a western gaming horse might wear it
      well).
    What circumstances brought you to him? (Ex. my friends' hunter was
      named Chance Encounter)
    Do you have any favorite things/places/people? (If you like trains
      and he goes like one - Amtrak or Sante fe (sp?) ; or Rolls Royce
      or Dallas)
    Where did he come from? (Down South, Oklahoma Gentleman...
    And of course take temperment into consideration!

    Does this help stir the thought patterns?

    Dani

321.2Names, Names NamesKRYPTN::RUSHTONWed Jul 08 1987 14:335
    He is a gelding and he is bay with a white blaze on his face.
    He is not a show horse, he is a trail horse. Dont know what kind
    he is, but he rides real nice and he goes western. Some Indian
    names would be nice, but I cant think of any.

321.3Why change his name?TALLIS::MJOHNSONWed Jul 08 1987 15:127
What's the horse's name now? Whenever I've bought a horse, I've always kept
his original name and/or call name. I've never felt I had the "right" to
change a horse's name. Afterall, they get to know their name, and might
wonder why you're calling him by the wrong one. The only time I "permit"
myself to dream up a horse name is for a newborn foal.

321.4a couple of indian names..BAXTA::BUTTERMAN_HOWed Jul 08 1987 15:2113

    I find that I prefer to name my horses something that I'm going
    to call them.... (I don't like nicknames, but all my animals
    seem to end up w/at least one!)...

    Indian names that I can think of.... Crie, Inca, Navajo, Aztec,
    Las (anything)... Pueblo,... 'something'hawk,  Zapotec

    	Well... there's a few, I bet some of our friends that are
    Thats a few.. maybe some of our friends east of the mississippi

    might be able to help? good luck and congrats - holly b
321.5try a map of the area.PIXEL::DANIWed Jul 08 1987 15:247

    On Indian names - Pick up a map. Many times places keep their
    original Indian names. Here in New England there are some rivers
    and streams and towns that have Indian names as do mountains.

321.6NAMES...NAMESMILVAX::NICKERSONWed Jul 08 1987 15:466
    I am having the same problem...however, it is a new born foal.
    One of the names that I do like (not Indian by any means) is Zanadu.
     However, I believe this foal (it's a filly) will be DW Flirtation.

    Good luck and congratulations on your new "family" member.

    There are some great node names out on the net. maybe you could
    one of them. Or how about dance names, jitterbug,rhomba(sp?),twist.

    My sister used to have Pawnee. And there's also Pottawatamee which
    is an Indian tribe from the midwest. liesl

    		i agree with the guy about changing names (re:?)
    anyway if the horse was never named.

    as a quarter horse person... i've always wanted to name a horse
    Spainish Lace or spainish toy.
    Too Much .

321.9history book??BOEHM::SCHLENERWed Jul 08 1987 20:3410
    When I bought my horse, I wasn't too crazy about his name, Duke
    of Earl. Try saying that when you're mad.
    I picked a name that was somewhat masculine and that brought good
    memories to mind. I decided on Jasper since I really liked the town
    of Jasper, Alberta.
    How about an indian chief's name like Geronimo? What might be nice,
    but time consuming, is go to the town library and look through a
    history book dealing with the West in the 1800's.

    How about Shawnee - a tribe the populate Ohio and hunted in KY.

    My hunter throughbred was Bill at home and Overdue Bill at the
    shows. He came with the name Bill which was alittle plain for
    the shows. I know I started a trend because now there's a horse
    named Deeper'n Debt. Cute and appropriate

if I may add my two cents..

I like the name Legato - which is quite appropriate for a dressage horse, as
it is a musical term meaning "..in a smooth, even style..." and you can call
him "Legs" for short!

Some geldings I have known are: Triton, Falcon, Justin, Bronwyn (pron. Bron -
win), Redigo, Sunny, Tasha, H.O.T. (short for "hang on tight"), Chalimar,
Sarajevo (pron. Sara-ye-vo - a good candidate for mispronunciation).

I named *TWO* fillies Maraya - from the broadway hit "Oklahoma" the song
goes "... and they call the wind Maraya..." (pron. Mer-i-ya) - I love that
name...

Indian names: Tecumseh (who was a Shawnee Indian Chief) - I had a QH mare
named Tecumseh's Tara and an old mare named Cheyenne.

A good place to get ideas for names is the listings of show results in the
Pedlar. I remember seeing a name which referred to financing -
I can't remember what it was... something like Chase Manhattan... it was
cute!

Good luck!
321.13Indian name - Chief JosephZEPPO::FOXThu Jul 09 1987 18:0915
    If you are really into Indian Chief names, try Chief Joseph and
    Joe for short. Chief Joseph was known as a great peacemaker (if
    I remember correctly) and about a year ago a tv documentary was
    aired about him.

    As an aside, I used to own an Appaloosa mare whose name was Chianina
    which was Indian for "dear girl". The name was very appropriate
    as this mare was a very athletic mover and she jumped like a deer
    with a sweet personality. But, I have been announced as riding,
    Cheena (her nickname), China, and worst of all Charisma!

    Good luck naming your horse!

    Some more Indian names for your new gelding:

    	Apache
    	Warrior
    	Chief
    	Tomahawk
    	Tonka

    There is also a Spanish name meaning friend "Amigo" which would
    be suitable for a good trail horse.

    I can't really agree wholeheartedly with this. My quarter was named
    Buckwheat Joey (YUK) and somehow this doesn't seem to apply to a
    black quarterhorse mare. Horses seem to pay more attention to the
    trust and love in your voice than in what you call them.
321.18CURIE::HERRINGFri Jul 24 1987 01:4810
    Up until last week, I agreed that one should never change a horse's
    name. m I was alwayas told it was bad luck. HOwever, I was in
    Bennetsville SC last week at a large (good ole boy) auction house
    and purchased a Registered QH. His official name is Leo's Toe.

    Leo was a great QH sire from the 50's. So I am definately going
    to give him a nickname.

    After all this waiting, Casper's last foal of the season has been born.
    He's out of a maiden mare who foaled about 9pm on Friday (7/19), the
    night before her due date. And we thought she'd go another month too.
    We think the heat got to her...poor thing was so uncomfortable.

    It's a loud palomino and white pinto colt - his markings are georgeous!
    So now come the hard part, naming him.

    			Sire:  Satin Gold

 		   	Dam:   J.D.'s Comet

    Satin Gold's owner likes to use `Gold' in the colored colts names.

    		Well, the time has come to pick out a registered
    	name for Ebony. Ebony is just about the only name he has
    	ever had. You guys were so good at those Finely Mae names
    	that I thought you'd like to try this one!! Limited to 18
    	characters. I have no parental names to go by, I'm working
    	with the Racking Horse registry (by gait, not pedigree).

    	Themes I have pondered include Pride, Joy, Ebony, Midnight,
    	(something military, ie General). He is jet black (if you
    	haven't guessed already), very calm, stands like a little
    	soldier, reliable, curious, and sports the typical TWH bunny
    	rabbit ears...haha. As his overly sentimental mom, I can't
    	come up with much that I wouldn't cringe to hear come over the
    	show loudspeakers because it's too corny!! :)

My very first horse, for whom I shelled out the princely sum of $250 (which
included a saddle and a bridle), was black. I have no idea who his parents
were but the man (horse dealer) I bought him from said "Well, I think he's
some kind of Walking Horse." Anyway, I named him Black Onyx. He was a
terrific old gelding and I learned a ton from him.

    Hi, I just finished naming my foal a few weeks ago and it was really
    hard because not just any name will suit, it has to "click" with
    the horse, so in the process of searching, I thought of and heard
    several good names, here are some of them:

    Chances Are
    Forget Me Not
    Amadeus
    His Honour
    Snowy River
    Revalee-Boy (a thoroughbred from the real life movie "Phar-Lap")

    City Lights
    Phoenix

    Partners In Time
    Two-Time Bruce
    Sir Outlaw (from the thoroughbred movie "Bluegrass")
    Bluegrass
    Northern Lights
    Indiana Jones (Indian horse)
    Apache
    Booker
    The Promise
    Sir Lancelot
