1952.0. "HELP WITH ORPHANED PHILLY" by DNEAST::SLADE_DICK () Wed Feb 22 1995 15:27

    WE JUST HAD A PHILLY BORN ON THE FEB 20. THE SIRE WAS MUSICAL LARK.

    UNFORTUNATELY THE MOTHER (SASHA) DIED SHORTLEY AFTER GIVING BIRTH.
    FROM A RUPTURED COLON.

    WE INTEND TO RAISE THE PHILLY AND HAVE AN EXCELLENT FACILITY TO DO SO.

    LEIGHTON FARMS IN OAKLAND, MAINE.

    I AM LOOKING FOR ANY ADVISE, TIPS, SUGGESTIONS, ETC THAT MIGHT MAKE
    LIFE EASIER FOR THE PHILLY, MY DAUGHTER, AND MY WIFE.

    IF ANYONE HAS HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE, I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR SHARING
    WHAT WORKED OR DIDN'T WORK FOR YOU.

    I don't have much experience with raising the little ones, but I
    would say lots of love and attention will help. As for feeding
    etc. - not sure about that one.

I don't know if this is feasible for you - but - you might want to check with
some local area vets to see if there is a mare around who had a foal die at
birth recently. She would still be able to produce milk and it would be
beneficial for your foal to nurse from a horse.

It sounds like a long shot but it would definitely be worth it if you could find
one. You would only need the help for a 5 months or so - 'til the foal was
weaning age. I have heard of people having very variable rates of success with
hand raising a foal....it is an incredible amount of work - and the
socialization (if you can call it that for horses) of the foal is very difficult.

I'll keep my ears peeled down here in MA to see if there is anything around here.

	Good Luck

1952.3How's the baby?BIRDIE::ROYWed Mar 01 1995 12:305
    How is your filly doing? My friend lost a mare almost 2 years ago, but
    I think that the foal was about a month old. He will be 2 in May. He
    did develop ulcers from worrying and being so depressed.

    So far so ggod. plenty of other horses around to indentify with. She
    seems to be addapting well to all the people attention she is getting.

    A little skitterish at times. (A novice observation). She is feeding on
    formula out of bucket regularly. No more bottles. I'm not sure I agree
    with this but people more horsey than me think its O.K.

    Doing well, over all, from my point of view, so far.

    If there was a problem with the bucket feeding, or if you wanted to see
    her sucking instincts satisfied you might want to try one of the cow
    nipple buckets that cow farmers use. It is just a bucket you hang up
    with a nipple attached to it. Much easier than a bottle and less chance
    of him getting it up his nose.

1952.6From one orphan to anotherOTOOA::GALLOPTue Mar 21 1995 00:0910
    We have not had personal experience to the same extent as your orphan.
    Our 2 year old was orphaned at the age of three months and was already
    eating solid food. The best influence we found for her was my 13 year
    old mare, for all the extra attenton she got from us she still had to
    learn to be a horse.

    All the best.
