1830.0. "Narcolepsy" by MR4SRV::CHMIBU::MShamel () Thu Nov 18 1993 13:36

A horse I am interested in has narcolepsy. This was diagnosed at
Cornell after he fell a few times in his stall.

Apparently, he has only had these attacks at night in his stall.
Never on the crosstie and never while being ridden, and not in
	turnout that anyone has observed.

	The question is this:

Has anyone else had a horse with this problem? Is it unusual that it
only occur at night? Will it progress to other times of the day?

I am pursuing the answers with my vet but wanted some first input
from people that might have seen it or experienced it.

	Thanks.

1830.1I wouldn't take the chance....POWDML::MANDILERainbow in my pocketThu Nov 18 1993 15:397

Too much of a chance that the horse may get worse and
fall while being ridden or on crossties or whatever.

I say pass this one by......

Eqqus had a good article on this disease, I think in one of their fall 92
issues. I once boarded a horse who had narcolepsy. He would fall in his
stall, and sometimes on the cross ties. He was fine undersaddle, believe
it or not, but knowing that the disease is progressive, I don't think its
a good idea to buy a horse like this. Even though the horse I knew had high
level training, he could only be given away... and even that was difficult.
Contact me offline if you want to know the name/description of the horse I
knew, in case its the same one.

Well, this one is not being given away. He has a price tag of $18K
on him. A 17-1 Hanovarian with a solid dressage training - training third
level.

My inclination is to pass but I was curious about anyones experiences. It
seemed strange to me that he would have this high a price tag with that
diagnosis.

I don't mean this in any way.. but If I had 18K to spend on a horse
that horse better be not only super trained but her better be
    %20000 healthy.

I know of alot of grand-pre leavel warm bloods for MUCH less $
    then $18K. and there healthy.

We have an old timer with it...he is 34 now and hasn't been under
saddle since he was 26 or so.

His attacks were during the day in the field by himself. He hasn't had
any now for about 5 years. We were aware of the attacks at 26 and that
is why we stopped riding him.

Good luck but at $18K I agree with the previous note.
