1547.0. "Equine Study Program Questions" by CSCMA::YEAW () Mon Apr 27 1992 13:03

Equine study programs.

I have a son who is about to enter his Freshman year at Framingham State and
is having seconds thoughts. Not about College but about the area of study
he'll be taking. He is currently looking at Business but really wants an
Equine Study program. Framingham State doesn't offer that area of study even
though they do have an Equestrian team. I'm aware of two colleges in the area
that offer an Equine studies program, Johnson & Wales and Mt. Ida. Are either
of these schools any good?

BTW My son is an accomplished rider, has owned a Paint since he was 13, and
has indicated all along he wants to make working with horses his life work.

Any thoughts and information would be appreciated.

Dennis

    UMass(Amherst) and UNH both have equine programs. At least they did a few
    years ago. The UMass program was highly regarded but I understand that the
    director has left so it may be different now.

    Sorry but I don't know anything about the 2 schools you mentioned
1547.2Johnson & WalesFRICK::SPINETTOMon Apr 27 1992 17:325
    We took my daughter down to Johnson & Wales for their open house. I
    was impressed but since I'm new to all of this I have nothing to
    compare it with. Give J&W a call and ask for a tour of the place.
    They will be very glad to take you around. Their program that they
    offered made me want to go to college!
1547.3Mount Ida - agreements with area barnsMARX::LMCCROSSANMon Apr 27 1992 17:436
	I think I remember hearing that Mount Ida has agreements with some
	area farms to run lecture sessions, demonstrations, etc. where
	instructors at some of these farms do the practicums.

	Does anyone know if this is still the case?
1547.4William Woods College?AIMHI::DANIELSMon May 04 1992 14:539
    This isn't in the area, but it might be something you want to look
    into. William Woods College in Missouri offers a bachelors in business
    management in equine studies. It's not an easy program, but is very,
    very good. While you are at the college you have to learn all
    disciplines, but of course you decide which one you want your business
    to be in, i.e., western, huntseat, etc., and major in that.

    I don't know their phone number so that you could call for a catalog,
    does anyone out in equitation land know?
