1548.0. "Courses in Veterinary Care ??" by SMAUG::MORENZ (JoAnne Morenz IBM I/C DTN: 226-5870) Mon Nov 04 1991 16:06

Does anyone know of any continuing education available in Massachusetts
by Tufts, cooperative extension, or vet clinics, on animal care, large or
small?

Are there such things as veterinarian's assistantship programs? I know
that a number of medical schools offer them for physician's assistantship.

	Thanks for your help,
		JoAnne

Sometimes my vet offers seminars in horse care- Mass Equine Clinic
    in Uxbridge, MA. 508-278-6511.

One time - a LONG time ago- I took a course in Barn Management at
one of the Aggie Schools - Essex Agricultural School. It ran one
night a week for a couple months and concentrated on horse barn
management (feed, illnesses/injuries and treatments, etc.). It was
an excellent course. I don't know if the school even exists anymore.

Another thought is Norfolk Agricultural School.

There's a school in AZ that offers a certificate course for Veterinary
Assistant. The school is a private medical institute (people
medicine). I learned that there are schools in Colorado that offer a
degree for Veterinary Technician (this may be offered in other states).
My understanding of the responsibilities of Veterinary Technician is
that you would do lab work, give shots and assist the Vet with surgery
and treatments. The pay scale for Technician is higher than Assistant
    - but both professions are very low paying out here in the West.

Nearly all community colleges in AZ have an Equine Science department.
They offer degrees and the courses are barn management, breeding,
nutrition, training, farriery and health maintenance. I read some
where that the horse industry is the 3rd largest industry in the
state - so this justifies the colleges support of it.

    Hi...

Becker Jr. College in Leicester, MA has a Veterinary Technician
    Program. It's a 2-yr. program...I talked to a girl who graduated from
the program and she said it is equivalent to being a nurse to a
doctor...so she'd be sort of the nurse to the Vet. They also offer
a Vet. Tech. program at Mt. Ida College in Newton, MA. I believe that
is a 3-year program. They also have a Veterinary Technoloy Program
which I think is 4 years. I'm not sure what the difference is between
    the two programs.

I forgot...I know that Mt. Ida has an Equine Science Dept. too. I
think they have lots of facilities and they compete in shows, etc. I
don't have too much info on this program, but I know they have it. I
think Becker may have one too.

Becker does not offer evening courses in any of the
    	Vet Tech degrees.
