1382.0. "Do you see it, too?..." by BOOVX2::MANDILE () Wed Oct 24 1990 13:31

I think the "recession" is finally hitting the horse
market here in N.E. It's impossible to sell any horse
(or even give away) with special needs, or an injury,
    or who is aged.
I've been talking to my horseclub members and other
horsepeople, and nothing's selling, even to the point
where one sold a thoroughbred colt for $300 just to
get it a good home, and it was a top bred baby, too.
I'm seeing "free to good home" in at least three of
my local papers, and many of the club members are
offering free breeding along with purchase of mares, etc.
The gas prices aren't helping any, as the feed & hay
prices have gone up. The shelter in Methuen is full
    of horses, too.

Does anyone else see this, too?

I definitly agree. The harness horse industry is really
hurting right now, the closest track to us is over 2 hours
away in Scarboro, Maine. If you truck all the way up there
with 2 horses and don't get a check, you are looking at well
over $100 lost between gas, paying drivers etc. Well bred,
staked colts sold at the sale at Scarboro for cheap money too.

I have a wonderful standardbred mare off the track that I have
saddle broken and am trying to find a home for. I have had
absolutely no luck. Of course the most important thing is a
good home, and I wouldn't think of giving her to anyone who
    I questioned.

I find this really depressing, and I hope there aren't horses
suffering because of the state of the economy. I would keep
all 4 of mine if I could afford it, I just can't!!!

Defineatly. We've been trying to lease or possibly even sell a nice
TB gelding since last summer. We've had a few lookers, but none
serious. He's a real nice horse, but the cost of upkeep is so
high and, face it, horses are an extravagant hobby. With mortgages
to pay, or rent, and prices of everything going up (except of course,
wages) it seems fewer and fewer people are willing to take on so
costly a pet. Thank Gawd I am able to keep my mare at home, paying
board would be really tight right now, and as well we all know the
cost difference between keeping at home and boarding is astonomical.
It's a shame, but a reality that horses (for most of us) are an
excessive strain on the old bank accounts.
