551.0. "litres and gallons" by VOGON::HUNT (I love my Volvo) Tue Apr 18 1989 13:03

I notice that Vincents in Reading is not displaying petrol prices
in gallons recently, but only in litres, and I realise I have no
    idea what this 'means'.

Is this their way of disguising the recent large increase in Esso
    prices?

This is an old topic, but I'm still catching up!

I am one of the "few" judging by the replies a few back, I much
    prefer Imperial measures to Metric.

One of the replies suggested that we should go Metric because it
would make it much easier for everyone when they drive on the
continent. I would suggest that only a very small proportion of the
Great Britain population ever drive on the continent. I happen to be a
part of that minority and have no problems except that I seem to get
where I going quicker than I'd imagined.

I recently had a holiday in the jolly old U S of A (lucky me, I
know!), what a great pleasure it was to find everything in Lbs, inches,
feet, Farenheit, gallons (yes, I know that their Gallons are only
4/5ths of ours - The Chevvy Lumina 3.1 LITRE (strange that that is how
they describe the engine size) fuel injected V6 automatic
saloon did an incredible 33 MPG of their gallons, cruising in the
    70s!!!!) etc.

It's all 'arold Wislon's fault, this 'ere Decimal Diddle and
metrification. 'e should be sacked I say! What do you mean "he was?"

I like the way the Americans treat Metrication - work everything in
Imperial measures and convert the end results to Metric! That is the
way to do it!!!!!!!! Let them as wants it in Metric have it.

By the way, did you hear about when the continentals tried to make
"Metric bricks?" This is true apparently - they couldn't get the
proportions correct and went back to Imperial measures. Like it!

No. Just adding a touch of Euro-glamour to a standard US barge.
    Like using French (Franglais) names...

A friend of mine who lives in Germany had a large gas pipe installed to
his house (to run his wife's pottery kiln).

It was described by the men from the Deutsches GasVerein or whatever
    they;re called as a "2 inch main".

Here in Belgium, plumbers still use pipes, fittings and joints in
Imperial sizes, mostly the iron ones. I haven't checked the copper
fittings, they have only recently become commonly used. Taps and so on
    are certainly Imperial.

The easiest way to convert Litre to Gallons is to multiply the Litres
by 0.22.
