1147.0. "VW announce 2.8 V6 Golf!!!" by CHEST::EASTMAN (Satisfaction Guaranteed!!) Wed Jul 11 1990 17:58

Does anyone have any details on the latest news from VW?

I have heard that the Corrado G60 will be available in RHD as from
1991, and that a totally new Golf is to be released in 1992.

The new Golf will even be produced with a 2.8 V6 engine, also with
the option of 4wd!!! Now that should be quite nippy!!

this info's been around for some time: VW have been developing their own V6
engine over the last few years (& having a fair number of problems with it)
engine is due for use in top[ spec Corrado, as well as in the Passat & Golf

I was reading something that mentioned VW's minimum requirement from
    it's new VW Corrado -- *IT MUST* out-excelerate the low-end Porsche's.

    I recall a mention of V6 2.5 and V6 2.5 16V engines. Perhaps this is
the same ( slightly extended ) lump being mentioned in .-* Maybe VW
have plans to use this development in the Golf's, Jettas, etc.

Also, I wonder if this ( i.e. the Corrado ) is the reason why Porsche
have dropped their 924 Series ?

1147.4KERNEL::MOUNTFORDWed Jul 11 1990 20:186
GTI Engineering's conversion of the 1.8 16V engine to 2.0 litres will
out class a Porche, with 175 BHP, so what will a 2.8 engine give?!!!
This sounds more like a rally or racing engine special, but if they
do become available I may put one in my Jetta, vrooooom, vrooooooom!!

the capacity was about 2.0 litres.

	Re: .1

The information came from Testwood Motors, Southampton, when
I took my golf in for a service! The salesman gave me the news
about the RHD Corrado first, because he knows that I want one!

Then he told me about the new golf. I said VW have enough problems
getting the 16V engine in, with not much room to spare! His reply
was that it will be a completely new shape/size Golf! Well let's
	just wait and see!!!

1147.7is it real ?NCEIS1::CHEVAUXPatrick Chevaux, Nice, 828-6995Thu Jul 12 1990 17:2210
Yes, the narrow angle V6 (something like 12-15 degrees allowing
one single alloy head to top all 6 cyl) has been around for some
time already. It should have appeared on the current Passat, but
VW announced at launch time that the engine was either cancelled
    or delayed.

I always thought that the cancellation of the low-end Porsche (924)
models would leave a niche for VW (Golf, Scirocco, Corrado). There
are other rumours about a VW mid-engined coupe (a la MR2) using
    the famous V6.

In american magazine "Car and Driver" (I think) there was an
anouncement for a new VW sports car,.....

    ........The Karman Ghia Mk II.........

For those of you who do not remember the first Karman ghia, the
production ran from 1959 to around 1975/6, being completely hand made
except for the mechanical components which were Beetle based. There
were no seams on this little beauty, as all panels were assembled
by hand, and then the seams were lead filled. The production run was
about 400,000 odd cars, quite good considering the work involved in
    making one!.

The new ghia, appears to have kept shades of the Mk 1's styling, and
will appear in convertable form. (not sure about hardtop). About the
same size/ market as the Mazda MX5.

I think they will, as Ghia, is an Austrian/German coachbuilder.
Besides, the Karman Ghia was still around when the first Cortina/Granada
    ghia's were around.

Are you sure that notice about the 'new' Karmann Ghia wasn't in the
    April issue?? (April fools joke?)

One advantage VW mentioned about the narrow angle V6 is that it's no
longer than the standard 5 cyl Audi engine, yet more distplacement,
    power, etc.

When do they plan to release the 16v engine in the Rallye Golf? The
guy over here in the states who has one of the two in the country, and
who is rallying it in Grp A form says he'll be getting the 16v engine
    'soon'.

How do you distribute 16 valves over 6 cylinders V or flat. Surely it
would be 24 valves. No apologies for being pedantic.

Sounds like VW really want to beat the **** out of the 16v Astra. When
can I order one through the lease scheme ?

    re: .8

Shouldn't this be the Mk III. There have been at least two
Karman Ghia models already, both based on VW mechanicals
but with different shapes. The earlier model was a lot
more rounded that the later one, but both shared a common
	"look".

Sorry, should have qualified that, the Rallye Golf has the 4 cyl
supercharged engine, but the 8v version. I guess they haven't got the
    4cyl/16v/supercharged combination together yet, that's what he's
    waiting for.

BTW, all the Corrados over here have the 4cy/8v/supercharged engine.
Is that the case overseas as well?

The Mk3 Karman Ghia you refer to was nicknamed the Razor-edge ghia,
and was called the "Type 3 Ghia" , meaning it was made with a chassis
from VW's type 3 model range, ie; Variant, fastback etc.

    ie;
Type 1 - Kafferwagon (Beetle) , and Karman Ghia.
       Type 2 - Transporter/Bus Camper
       Type 3 - Variant (estate), Fastback, squareback,& Razor-edge ghia

Do you know if this engine is available in the Rallye Golf and if it has
been homologated into Group A yet?

The power sounds very promising. The 8v/super put out about 160 stock
and Tim had it up to about 200 or a little more. With the 16v/super
engine he ought be looking at high 200's or 300 possibly. This will
really give the Audi Quattros a run over here!

Whilst we are talking new Golfs, does anybody know if there is a ghost of
a chance of the "Country" ("Gehlande" - sp?) Golf coming to Britain?

This is a Golf Synchro with a custom chassis and bull bar by

The official answer to that is NO.
    The Following Extract is from this months VW Motoring;

" Although there are no plans to bring the car into the UK,
Volkswagen's Golf Country is now on sale throughout V.A.G.'s showrooms
    in mainland europe.
The Country appeared originally atthe Geneva Show last year bearing
the test name "Montana", is amodified 5-door Golf Syncro built at the
    Styr-Dailmler-Puch factory.
Bull bars at the front and rear, 6j X 15" wheels, and a seperate
sub-frame giving an additional 7" ground clearance endow the Country
not only with a purposeful appearance but with 'serious' off-road
    potential. "

there's a review of the car in this months 'Car' magazine...

they weren't too impressed by it, saying that hte only advantage over the
standard synchro was imroved visibility (increased ride height) and greater
pose value.

I wouldn't swear to the accuracy of this info, but I have been told

does sound good !!!!!!!

1147.29VW Golf VR6 <moved by mod>VISA::GALLACHERTue Feb 09 1993 18:4213
Can anyone tell me - is the VW Golf VR6 available in Britain in right hand
drive version? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I've been away for a
while...

If not, anyone heard of plans to make a right hand version available?

Last question - how much does it cost new? (approximately!)

thanks for any help,

Lancia Delta Integrale's are not available in RHD either, also I believe
that they will still continue being made in the old body-style for some
time to come - The ordinary Delta has just gone/going to a new
    bodyshell.
If it's refinement you want go for the Golf, but if it's pure
excitement go for the Delta. Personally I'd buy both :-) the Lancia
for fun and the VW for when I've got a hangover.

Let me explain this shift in ideas from the VR6 to the Integrale - I'm looking
for a car that I could buy in France and take back to England later. So, I'd
like to buy something that isn't available in RHD so that I'll be able to
sell it in England and won't have to drag it back to France. I really like the
VR6 and when I was in England last, it wasn't available in RHD - I was
hoping that it still wasn't - sigh!! Not so sure about the Integrale, I mean,
it's not very subtle is it?
