1821.0. "I know it's a motorbike !" by MAJORS::ALFORD (lying Shipwrecked and comatose...) Tue Jul 07 1992 16:20

As it's not a Harley, and nothing to do with the states...

Anyone know of anything about the GPZ 305 (belt drive)...bad or good ?

    Its one of the GP range of kwaka's (red sporty thing with unitrak rear
    end). It has been around for a good few years, but I don't think it was
    ever very popular, bit like the Hondamatic 400 wet dream. I heard that
    the belt was very efficent and lasted longer than a chain. The other
    obvious thing is around 300 CC ish. I know no more.

    Owned one for a year......

    Good points:

    * Powerful for it's size (36 BHP 110 MPH)
    * Good roadholding (fit Pirelli Match or Phantom+1 tyres) << better.
    * Good MPG (55 usually).
    * Easy to service/maintain.
    * Belt drive is longer lasting than chain.
    * Great brakes
    * Plenty on the market to choose from.
    * Good J and H reg's fetching 1500 - 1800 pounds.
    * Mine never let me down (old D reg with 35k miles).
    * 4 stroke engine should last to 60k if well cared for.

    Bad points:

    * Many dispatch riders use them...so shop around for a good one.
    * Top-end engine problems common......valves, guides and cam chain.
    * Rust like hell if not properly looked after.
    * Unitrack swing-arm bearings/sleeves cause problems on high mileage
      bikes.

    If you see a good low mileage one, that has been well looked after (ie
    regular oil changes) buy it!!

    Hope this helps...John.

Thanks .3

Just the sort of info I'm looking for...

I've got the "blurb" sheet (and Re: .1 they are black with a bit of red on
them :-) ) and sat on one...

Just got to find one I can take for a test ride now...

Rather than start a new topic i'd thought i'd write here.

I had my bike stolen on Saturday. I found it around the corner, where i imagine
it has been dunped after being used... there is luckily no damage to it except
for the cable being ripped out.

What i'd like to know is how does one hot-wire a bike? I'd like to know so that
i can drive it to the repair shop to get the wiring re-done. It'd be a hard job
to rewire in the state it's in.

If it's not a suitable subject for discussion in a notes conference, i'm sorry.
Could someone reply off-line?

Also, after finding the bike in this state would there be any reason for there
to be a flat battery or anything else wrong with it?

Thanks,

					Lewis.

    Sad news... Let's just hope they haven't wrecked the engine...

? How exactly do you mean Laurie? The bike itself looks fine, no damage to any
paintwork/fairing...
1821.9PLAYER::BROWNLFault tolerance is for machinesTue Dec 29 1992 16:354
    Well, internal damage, like over-revving, running with low oil,
    straining, jumping the clutch; that sort of thing.

    Laurie.
1821.10Obviously i know nothing about this subject at all! ;-)RUTILE::BISHOPWhat the HELL are you talking about man!Tue Dec 29 1992 18:0013
    So, what, should i get it checked out? It's only just had a service
    plus new sprocket set and chain should i would assume it was in fairly
    good nick before being stolen... anyway i can check damage or do i
    just have to get on and ride it?????? (i can't start it at the moment).

    Regarding the cut wires, if i re-joined the ends (colour coded) would i
    have anything to worry about in regards to shorts etc...

    Cheers,

    					Lewis.

	I suppose it depends how many wires are cut. But if you are
	careful and wrap each join independently before taping up the
	lot you might be ok. However, you could be open to vibration
	destroying your connections or damp. You could do it as a
	"get you to the experts" lash-up. Would a brand new wiring
	loom be that expensive?

    There are over 5 wires cut, and there appears to be some kind of casing
    removed from the steering just above the keyhole... anyone know what it
    is? The bike is a CBR600f2 for reference. I don't actually know if
    there was casing there before but it somehow 'looks' wrong. Don't know
    how much a new wiring loom etc would cost... the shop's shut for the
    XMAS period... should be opening next week!!!
1821.13A practical bodge?MARVIN::RUSLINGDave Rusling REO2 G/E9 830-4380Mon Jan 04 1993 16:4616
	I don't know how much room you've got, but for a (very) temporary
	repair you could use one of those electrical blocks from B&Q (and
	other DIY places). The ones where you screw in the wires and connect
	one to one. Do this and put lots of tape around and you'll last until
	the shops open. Whatever you do, don't just twist the wires together,
	I don't think that you'll get a good enough conection for long enough.
	Oh, and don't forget that you have to be able to turn the handlebars
	without either a) pulling the wiring apart or b) injuring yourself.

	As for what it looks like, have you the manual? I've never had one of
	those bikes, so I've no idea what it looks like. My old Honda had a key
	in the plastic instrument binicle (sp?), above it were just the warning
	and turning lights.

	>without either a) pulling the wiring apart or b) injuring yourself.

    	Yea, good point, this is one of the things i'm worried about. The
    	leads coming apart during driving it to the garage. And there
    	really is NO play in the wires. I'm considering calling out the
    	mechanic now to come and fix it at my place.

    	I haven't got the manual. I was planning to get one sooner rather
    	than later but i guess it's a little late now! ;-( I guess i'm not
    	too confident of the wires staying together or not restricting use
    	so thanks for the answers but i'm going to call out the mechanic
    	as soon as i can.

    	Thanks,

    					Lewis.

    I know this is not much help but, my little brother had his Kawasaki
    Blah125 dirt bike niked of the drive. The little B*^$^rds cut the wires
    around the steering head too. It was repaired on the insurance and from
    memory, all the dealer did was rejoin all the wires, Not sure what
    means, and then used loom tape to bind it all up again. It al worked,
    but I suspect that the only other answer was a new loom.

What about the Honda Dealer on the top of the A30 between
Sainsbury's and the M3? I forget the name.

Drop it off in the morning, and get a colleague who
comes in from that direction to give you a lift.

Huw.

(Mind you they might have moved or gone bust in the 5 years
 since I left Basingstoke!)
