2095.0. "Noisy differentials" by KERNEL::BARTHUR () Tue Jun 08 1993 20:08

Has anyone heard of a product called Krosebond, Krowesbond or
similar spelling. It's an additive for differentials that the trade use
    for hiding noisy diffs.

Anybody know where i can buy it? My cat's has gone noisy (due to an
oil leak) and a rebuild would have me in the bankruptcy courts.

Sawdust has been known to quiet down noisy diffs and trannies over the
years, but I'm not sure of the longevity of the fix.......

    Bill,
as -1, but sell it rather quickly (max 2 months) or for the health
freaks orange/citrus fruit peel will do the same...

2095.3Temporary solutionROCKS::CAMPWed Jun 09 1993 13:3520
Using very high viscosity oils may help eg EP 140, or even using
grease though I hate to think what that would do! However if your
problem was a result of lack of oil the diff is likely to be ruined
by now and will most likely get progressively worse. Running without
oil will allow the gear surfaces to get very hot and loose their
temper, (get soft). These surfaces then wear and distort, so now
instead of the lowish friction gear operation you get high friction
sliding teeth, which wear faster and dissapate more power etc, etc.

If the problem is due to the gears getting out of alignment, eg pinion
thrust bearings dissintegrating it may be salvageable, but won't be if
you let it run for any length of time.

Whatever you do without sorting out the real problem it will only be a
    temporary measure.

    Sorry for the bad news.

    Mike

I had a girlfriend who whined a lot. I know what I used to give her to
keep her quiet, but I can't see what good that would do for a diff., or
    indeed, how you'd do it.

    Helpfully, Laurie.

Laurie,

How did you stop your girlfriend whining ?

Did you marry her, and now you have a wife that whines ??

    Re .5

If you don't do it the rear axle it's certainly going to do it to you
and just when you don't want it....

If you own a Saab and the differential starts to sing to you, start
saving! The cause may well be the pinion bearing, laughingly described
as the last bit you take out having removed the engine/gearbox and
    stripped the gearbox!

Anyone who thinks that DEC contractors coin it in should see the hourly
    rate for Saab mechanics!

Oh for the days when a back axle was a back axle (and men were men etc).

re:.5, I think its already happened to the diff ;^)

.0 The stuff is called KRAUSBOND & used to be advertised in Exchange &
Mart as a direct-from-importer item. They made various miracle claims,
I dont know how good the product is.

A now defunct Reading Vauxhall garage drained the oil from my gearbox
as part of the service. It whined like Hell until the gearbox siezed
solid. After refilling it burst back into life & continued to whine for
several years. The moral here is if you dont want to buy a new diff for
your cat, then dont. If filling with Krausbond, STP, Molyslip or other
snake-oil remedies shuts it up, then it may save you a lot of money. Go
for it, what can you lose ?

Joining National Breakdown would also be cheaper than a new diff :^)
Has anyone tried the Teflon-based additives ?

    Tony.

Another thing to consider is - is it a limited slip diff? If so, some of
these additives or miracle fluids might cause more damage than good.

2095.11not a slippyKERNEL::BARTHURFri Jun 11 1993 13:5611

Thanks for the info on the Krausbond.
It's not a limited slip diff and I would swap it if it was a straight
forward job, jag diffs being relatively inexpensive and easy to find
secondhand, but it's a hell of a job unless you swap the whole lot
complete with brakes, hub carriers subframe etc etc. And even then it's
    not without problems.

Does anyone know where to get this stuff then?

    Bill...
