1961.0. "Re-silvering plastic !!!" by AEOEN2::MATTHEWS (M&M Enterprises, the CATCH 22) Fri Nov 27 1992 19:45

Does anyone know if it is possible to re-silver plastic ?

The reflectors on the headlights on my 2002 are shot. The replacement
cost is UKL 40, per reflector. All that is wrong is that the silver on
the plastic has faded, and because of the the lights are almost useless.

I have to do something to fix this, and was wondering if re-silvering
is an option.

Well, I used to get a nice finish on my Airfix aircraft by using Duraglit to
shine it up. Bright as it was, it was not a highly reflective finish - however
it may be worth investigating?

    Why not line them with bacofoil?

    This used make them usable until you're feeling flush..

They have to be covered with something. The base plastic is white, covered
with silver. Problem is the silver has long gone, leaving white plastic
which isn't very reflective.

Bacofoil ... sounds like my type of fix :-) Are you a part of Digital
Field service ? :-)

    Nah I`ve just seen a lot of old cars that have had this done.

    Can you take the plastic out completely??

    What about spray painting it??

Can you get a good, reflective spray paint ?

Yes, the plastic bits can be removed. This is something I've found
with BMWs, you can take almost everything apart ... very few sealed
units.

    You can buy chrome spray paint....dunno how long the shine lasts on it
    though.

I'll give it a try ... nothing to loose. Thanks.
1961.8Ali not silver....ROCKS::CAMPTue Dec 01 1992 20:535
    I think the finish is vacuum deposited Aluminium, coated with some
    protective plastic whatever, and not silver. I think the best bet
    would be the Ali foil as a temp measure.

So, does anyone know of a "vacuum deposited Aluminium and plastic coating"
facility available anywhere ? :-) I suspect this would probably cost more
that the new price !!!
1961.10MAJORS::ALFORDlying Shipwrecked and comatose...Wed Dec 02 1992 14:443
have you thought of trying something like Humbrol model paints...there's one
called chrome silver (or somesuch) that'll be fairly reflective...
1961.11Try vacuum coating companies..?ROCKS::CAMPWed Dec 02 1992 14:4812
    All you need is a high vacuum pump, diffusion pump, table assembly with
    glass bell jar so you can see what you are doing, a few grams of pure
    aluminium, a low voltage high current source, and I think high voltage
    source. In all about 2-3K pounds, just a bit dearer than the spares but
    just think of the fun you will have....

    There are companies around that do vacuum coatings but I don't know of
    any myself, try yellow pages, but most likely they will be very
    expensive, worth a try??
