2486.0. "Charade fi" by 44648::MCKAYRE () Tue Jan 23 1996 19:14

    Hi

I'm the proud owner (sometimes) of a Daihatsu Charade Gtti and recently
I was advised to change the fuel filter which when you consider that
the car has now done 100k miles seemed like a reasonable idea to me.

So off I went to price a new one at the local factors...
now being for a Denso fi system logically enough they could only
offer me a Denso filter but it was over 40 pounds.

Now I'm wondering if I have any alternatives i.e. using a cheaper
filter from another system and changing the fittings on my fuel lines
    to make it fit.
Do the filters come with different resistances to fuel flow, obviously
    they will have different capacities.

    Cheers

    Rory.

    Rory,

Camberley Auto factors list a Fram filter Part number G6573
although they say it will be a special order, it might be worth
    contacting Fram direct.

    Hope this helps

    Simon.

    Simon,

Thanks, now all I have to do is find a Fram stockist up here in
    sunny(?) Scotland.

    Cheers

2486.3A few quidCHEFS::GERRYTFri Jan 26 1996 16:247
Petrol filters should be pretty cheap in-line affairs.

Why you would need to pay 40 pounds for it I can't understand!
They are only a few quid each normally.

It's prbabyl nut just a filter. The one on my 2.8i Capri is quite big -
sort of like a big ignition coil - and is directional, it also has some
    sort of valve inside it.

If the car is carb'd the fuel filter is usally one of the cheap ones.
However, if it has f/i, the filters tend to get expensive. Mainly because the
whole fuel system tends to be pressurized and the fuel line connections need
to be bolted together. Most f/i fuel filters I've seen are metal cases with
bolt on line connections.

    The man knows.

Very true mine is metal cased and about four inches long with almost
brake pipe type like connectors top and bottom.

According to my mechanic (a mate) its the non-standard connections that
    makes mine so pricey.

typical of the car makers to have 'non standard connectors' just to get

re .4 the valve is probably there to stop you backwashing it and
    saving money.

Re .0 et al, is this Charade thingy a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke? Not that
I could advise you either way based on your answer, but I thought I
remembered a 2 stroke version of the Charade, and all that nasty oily
stuff is bound to complicate things and add oodles to the cost.

Just a 2 cyl boxer, regular 4 stroke.

The original Iso Isetta was a 2 stroke, 2 cylinder, single piston engine (or
was it 1 cylinder, 2 pistons?)

What about the Peel and some of the other micro cars? Did anyone mention the
Trabant?

dunno about this one, but a friend of mine used to have a 3 cyl. diesel

Put it this way it red lines at 7500 revs and 3 cyl engines are not
known for being tooo smooth but still it almost does 40 mpg.

2486.23 40 MPG overall? CHEFS::POWELLMThe x3030 contractor.Tue Jan 30 1996 15:2011
I'm surprised that the 3-cyl isn't smooth, since the DKW (admittedly
a 2-stroke) is (was) remarkably smooth.

    >>>it almost does 40 mpg

Is that an overall average or only for gentle motoring? My Xantia
has averaged a fraction under 40MPG over the 28,500 miles it has done
now. That is a Diesel though - it does do 112 MPH the Road tests tell
me - I've only seen 115 INDICATED on the level, but I don't know what
    the true speed was.
    				Malcolm.
2486.24Right foot like lead ballon..44648::MCKAYRETue Jan 30 1996 16:5712
That figure is day to day average mostly on fast-ish A roads and dual
    carrigeways, using 4*.

I had a 2cv a couple of years ago and that was not smooth, the Charade
engine is smoother than that but is still distinctly different to a
    4 cyl.

Tell-me is your Xantia one of the ones that stays level no matter how
fast you go round the corners ?

I would be interested in any info on the car that you have.

I've had it for about 18 months now but still don't know a great deal.

    At what speed?
    115MPH?

Charade offered 5 different engines to choose and all of them had

Just at tick over it sounds very lumpy but when the revs increase it
becomes smoother.I don't know if this is specific to a Gtti engine or
    all the 3cyl models.

Your engine is specialy re-designed from other Charade engines.

Others are SOHC Diesel w/wo turbo and SOHC gasoline w/wo turbo.
They kept same configuration(3cyl) and size(993cc) but every single
parts are redesigned and the head is changed with DOHC, also made
it stronger by using different materials.
The suspension system and the breakes are different from others too.
I beleive you have 7" ventilated disc front and 7" solid disc rear.
You have independent suspension all around with stabilizer installed
    at both front and rear.
You could choose combination of 3door-hatch/5door-hatch/3AT/4MT/5MT
/Diesel/Diesel turbo/gasoline/gasoline turbo for cheaper models.
But the GTti's only came with 3door-hatch + 5MT + DOHC gasoline turbo
    combination.
I never owned one, no experience with 3cyl engines so I can't make
any comments how smooth they should be.
I do have full test report on the Charade GTti somewhere in my basement
but I couldn't find it, sorry.

Back to original subject, have you decided to treat 40 pounds or still
looking for a low cost one?

    Mitz
2486.32Got one, I think.VYGER::MCKAYRETue Feb 06 1996 13:5513
I've managed to track a filter down, well order it at least.
Hopefully it will fit when it gets here. It is only going to cost
15pounds, quite a bit cheaper than the original quote.

If you ever track down that report on the car I would be v. interested.
