Thank you Mr Rutter for the 1500 line entry, I am glad I am not in the US
running DECwindow notes. It was bad enough here.

not. Why not complain to the developers? In the meantime, take advantage of
DECwindows and get on with something else while the note is read in.

What is the point of a note with a directory listing? Can't people just
type dir from within notes?

    I for one found it useful enough that I extracted it. Notes is very
    slow and I don't like to waste time going up and down the directory.
    Editing a file with the directory listing in is considerablely faster.

	I know that it's often difficult to work these things out for
	oneself, but next time, Mr Rutter, put a note BEFORE your totally
	unnecessary directory listing, containing text that tells
	Decwindows notes users that the *following* note is ludicrously
	long (and unnecessary)... that way we don't have to sit and wait
	for 5 minutes before getting to the next note.

    to input to this discussion......
    
    One of my first learnings at Digital was when Bill Johnson (BJ) told a
    group of us the worst thing we could do was to fix other peoples
    problems for them. Why? Because it takes the pressure off them having
    to fix it themselves.
    
    At the time the discussion was on Cluster Naming, but I can't help
    feeling that pre-posting a long note with a warning falls into that
    category of trying to fix someone elses problem........

Long enough to open another window, and read all the unread entries in another
popular file, AND go for a pee and cup of coffee.

Anyone who wants a directory should have the common sense, and courtesy, to
know how to get one for themselves, preferably in batch mode at 3am ....

The "New Management System" is the counter to this - "you see a problem, you
fix it".  Incidentally, I NEVER heard the statement above in almost 20
years with Digital.

    Poor old John provides a customer service and gets his butt chewed 
    off (Been reading RACERS Too much!!! :^)). This is most certainly
    not the only conference with directories in notes, so why does
    it cause so much hassle?
    
    Fix your Windows environment. All this flak aimed at John sounds like

	Vaxnotes IMHO works perfectly even on a VS2000 and is far
	superior to DCL notes IF people do not post long replies,
	and anyway (once again IMHO) any note containing more than
	30 lines is a waste of space and is likely to be skipped
	past without being read. As far as directories go I agree
	with Brian... if someone wants a directory (and surely
	its a minority of noters who do) then they can get it
	themselves at a suitable time.

    a moderator can make that decision and delete it...
    
    Alternatively, perhaps it should be moved so that a warning

How about doing a directory every now and then and posting the location of the
file.

Savings:

	Time for uploading entry

	Disk space for the CARS_UK.NOTE (only one version)

	Time and space of people talking about the philosophies of the
	different notes readers

For the record, the DECwindows interface works very well for me until I come
across a large note.

    Personally i  don't use  DecWindows NOTES  because i don't like it, 
    although this  w/s is  easily  capable. That's  my own  choice, and 
    everybody  is intitled to  their choice/opinion. If you are limited
    by  hardare or time, then you  have to  decided whats best for you. 
    Maybe running it on a 6mb 2000 isn't really wise? I don't know. The
    only 6mb  2000 i've seen  could only  just handle  about 4 windows.
    The guys using it, ended up using his vt220 more.
    
    The DIRECTORY topic is almost compulsory in most notes conferences,
    they nearly  all have a  directory topic. In future let's make sure
    that a  note precedes  it saying  "Long note in  next  reply...". I
    remember  putting  in an  extractable  picture, and getting my head
    blown off (it  was a good picture  though! ;-) How  many of you can
    remember it?), so i've  learnt my lesson, but let's not  go through 
    this whole thing again. Maybe topic 1 could have a reply about long 
    notes?

    As already mentioned, Directory Topics are quite common in most
    conferences. I don't know about you chaps, but when I see a topic
    titled DIRECTORY, I think, well, bugger me, maybe, (just maybe), there
    might be a directory listing in there.
    
    Mind you, I have been to college (twice), and have a couple of CSE's.

The point is, you don't get to see the topic title until it appears on your
screen, and by then it's too late.  The alternative is to remember the date
and time of that long note, kill the window, re-open a notes window, set seen
before, then continue as before.  A little courtesy, on the other hand, works
wonders.

    I've just acquired some new software which has an interface to Notes
    that I intend to use.
    
    This will require all of *you* to remember the following......
    
    Each entry you make should be paginated every 17 lines.
    
    Left margin should be set at column 9, and tabs set at alternating
    intervals of 5 and 8 columns.
    
    Right margin *must* bi in column 70, unless there's an "R" in the
    month, in which case column 71 *may* be used from DECwindows terminals
    *only*.
    
    Failure to comply with these courtesies will cause me untold
    inconvenience and will probably result in me adding even more replies
    to this topic.

just thought I'd add this as a pointer to our newer users that you can
find discussions in existing topics by using the DIRECTORY/TITLE=...
command (or DIR/TIT= for lazy users :) to find articles whose title
matches what you're looking for; eg, to find all the discussions which
might be about classic cars, DIR/TIT=CLASSIC should do the trick.  This
is, of course, for the standard notes interface; GPC and DECwindows
notes have their own `user intuitive' (snigger) ways of doing this...

    Can I have a bit of feedback from you folks.
    
    Some time ago it was suggested that a note was set up for quotes only
    as they were no longer displayed on VTX.
    
    It was requested that this note was policed so that it could easily
    be used for reference.
    
    If no one is bothered anymore i won't waste me time moderating note
    2290.

I think it was anticipated we'd be entering tens of quotes per day/week. The
odd one or two going in doesn't make it a great issue. I'd say don't waste 
your time on it.

    Apologies to the noter who put in 2380.0 about Astra GTE revving.
    
    I tried moving it to note 2246 (ASTRA GTE) but its gone up in a puff of
    smoke and 2380 is unaccessable.
