385.0. "Alloy Wheels" by SIEVAX::RWATSON (When the going gets weird... ) Tue Nov 08 1988 11:44

Well... I'm pretty annoyed. I knew it had to happen but I had been so careful
up till now. The problem ? My nice alloy wheels and my nice slick P7 tyres.
Great... look the business but rather prone to getting damaged by kerbs and
things ( which I avoid like the plague ). Anyway, last night I was driving
down a narrow lane and was forced off the road by an oncoming car. With an
almighty "Bang !" my nearside wheels fell into a pot hole. Then, even over the
stereo I could hear "Tssst Tssst Tssst !". Oh no... I stopped expecting to
find a P7 with a gash right across the tread but nothing. The air only came
out with the weight on certain points. As I was only a mile or two from home I
drove gingerly home listening the the "Tsst Tsst" hoping it wouldn't stop and
leave me running on the rim. Well... got home, whipped the wheel off and then
the damage was apparent. The tyre was ok but the inner rim of the alloy was
bent in enough to stop the tyre seating.

I don't think the damage is THAT bad and I was wondering if anyone had heard
of/knew of alloy wheel repairs ? I know that bike alloys can be repaired in
certain cases, but what about small radius dents in car alloys ?

And the moral is... be VERY,VERY,VERY careful if you go below 50 profile
tyres ! There's not a lot of rubber between the wheel and the road !

    Demon Tweeks sell OZ Wheels. I've seem OZ wheels with sparco on them,
    does that suggest that it may be sparco that you need to talk to and not
    OZ.

385.17Alloys for a VW?WSTENG::HICKMANPeter HickmanWed Mar 02 1994 13:126
I'm thinking of replacing the wheels on my VW Golf Cabrio. However some distant
memory of mine says there is something different or odd about VW wheels off-set?
Is this true and if so what should I be looking out for when looking for the new
wheels? Thanks in advance.

Peter.
385.18Flaky wheels?BAHTAT::HILTONBeer...now there's a temporary solutionWed Jun 28 1995 18:279
    Following the saga of my Calibra wheels actually getting nicked I
    noticed last night that the brand new wheels are flaking around the
    rim. Needless to say they are being replaced under warranty, but has
    anyone else seen this kind of thing? Is it caused by something, or is
    it a fault in the wheel?

    Cheers,

I read about a similar thing that happened when some guy bought a
used car from BMW. They denied responsibility, but I can't remember
offhand what the outcome was... (or where the issue of `What Car' is)
