1114.0. "Granada views" by LESLIE::LESLIE (Andy, CS Systems Engineering/VMS) Wed Jun 13 1990 18:06

    Is there any concensus on Granadas out there?

    Specifically, any views on the reliability of 3-year-old Granada 2.0i
    Ghia?

    These vehicles have been popular salesman's buses since they emerged
    from the factory. People that I know have been highly satisfied liked
    them enough to have a second in a row. You could
    check with Car fleet to identify who's got Granadas of that age
    (there might still be a few near the end of a long lease) and ask
    the pundits what their reliability history has been.

    When new they were a whole lot of car for the money.

I bet these will be sold on to unsuspecting Joe Public

After being clocked back to 55 to 65 k or so.

Anyone want to start this off as a new topic? Or are we going to continue in
the best Noting tradition with another rathole :-)

    I had a Granada 2.0i Ghia lease car for three years. Generally very
    satisfied, never let me down or left me stranded. Had warped fron
    discs, which were eventually fixed by replacement and a steering
    modification to stop it happening again. Also had probs with the
    autobox; when the lease expired, there was talk of a decoke to resolve
    this (something to do with a vacuum connection crudded up).

    Not specially fast, unrefined when extended, very comfortable in
    a straight line but rolled on bends. Lots of electric things and
    a good standard stereo.

    If you want more, give me a ring.

    Are any noters here members of the Granada owners' club? Or, indeed, do
    any noters here know anyone in said club?

    My 1985 2.0 estate needs replacement, and I can't really afford a new
    one (now they've finally released an RHD version). If I could find a
    genuine, low mileage, late (B/C reg.), 2.0/2.3, 5-Speed estate to
    replace it, I'd happily wait a year until the new ones are on the
    secondhand market.

    It seems to me, that the club has to be a good starting point, unless
    anyone knows of such a car around.

    Laurie.

    Hyyuukkk.... who's seen the new Granada then?

    What an absolutely disgusting front end, and the rear wheel arches need
    filling out, and those headlights.... and the grill.....

    Never before have I contemplated throwing up over a picture, but this
    could be a first.....

    (Still, we all said the same about the Sierra when it came out didn't
    we?)

    I thought the headlights looked as if they had been pinched from that
    funny Mazda micro car of a few years ago. Given the Mondeo's resemblance
    to the 626 it's hardly surprising I suppose. I agree the front end, in a
    photo, looked pretty bad.
    The article I read, YP, said the Ford designers could either make a
    statement or make another bland car. I wish they'd gone for the latter.

1114.8For the Mondeo it was an outside CAD/CAM companyVARDAF::CHURCHDave Church@VBE (DTN 828-6125)Thu Oct 20 1994 14:386
    I know one of the guys who worked on designing the headlights for the
    Mondeo (it was an outside CAD/CAM company and not Ford) - we gave him
    some stick over this I'll check if they also worked on this cars as
    well...

    It looks like they've crossed a Rover 800, Mercedes 180 and Nissan
    Micra and still haven't taken any of the good elements associated with
    each of the cars!

    Until I see one in the flesh, I'm happy to regard the new Ford Granada
    as barf on wheels.

    :-)
1114.10YukUNTADE::TOPThu Oct 20 1994 17:393
    Its rear end is no better. Looks like the old Granny saloon (no beauty)
    with masking tape hiding the light clusters.

    Saw this thing at the Motor Show yesterday. I've got to agree with all
    the comments - it looks crap. The lights aren't too bad, but the
    grille is disgusting! Apparently the V6 2.9 with all the bits will be
    on sale for about 26 grand, that's about four grand less than for an
    equivalent Omega (Elite?)...

    I didn't even bother with the Ford stand on Saturday. The queue was
    silly just because Ford had to have their 'own' little hall. And when I
    thought about it, I wondered what I wanted to see in there anyway.

    	o New Ford Granada - no thanks
    	o More rebodies, restyled Fiestas and Escorts. No ta.
    	o Softer Escort Cossie - well, maybe.
    	o New Transit - umm no thanks
    	o Ford Kar - lovely colour (not)

    ???? Went to Range Rover stand instead!
1114.13METSYS::ALLENFink - The Funky FishMon Oct 24 1994 13:163
    I was too busy looking at the women on the stands to notice the cars.
    But I can't say I took much interest in the Ford stand (car wise that
    is), the Granada looked like a Micra in a hall of mirrors.

	The Ford Mondeo and the Mazda 626 have much more than a resemblance to
each other, they are the same except for the badges and the factory in which
they are put together! They were both designed by Mazda for Ford.

	Likewise, the Ford Probes are actually built for Fords by Mazda, using a
Mazda model which I can't remember.

	Ford do have a substantial stake in Mazda - 25% if I remember correctly.

    Ford Probe / Mazda MX-6 ? I know they use the same engine, I think it's
    (basically) the same car..... ?
1114.16WOTVAX::STONEGTemperature Drop in Downtime Winterland....Tue Oct 25 1994 16:155

    Probe & MX-6 use the same floorpan & drive-dtrain I think, also Fords
    stake in Mazda is more like 40%

I thought the Ford Mondeo was "all new". It does look a little
like the 626, but in no way is it the "same car". I don't
think the Mondeo uses the 626 floor plan, and it certainly
does not use the same body shell or interior fittings. I think
you may be getting confused with the Ford Maverick and the
Nissan Terrano II which ARE identical apart from the badge.

    Mondeo is all new (V6 excepted). It's a FORD "world" car. Mazda may
    use bits of it.
