2270.0. "Leaking gearbox on AH Sprite" by ESSB::DOODY () Thu Jun 09 1994 20:00

    I own a 1967 AH Sprite Mk IV (1275cc) and I have just completed a
    5-year bare metal restoration. In have had various mechanical problems
    and have usually found a solution here in the cars notes conf.

    So heres my latest problem:

    The gearbox is losing oil, both from the front (theres no front seal
    on theses type of gearboxes!!) and from the rear (i fitted a new seal
    here 1 month ago) I had this problem with another AH Sprite I owned.

    Has anyone out there experienced this???
    Since theres no seal at the front what is supposed to stop the oil
    coming out??

    All suggestions welcome

    Brian.

    Can't help on the rear, but re: the front; are you sure it's not
    leaking from the rear of the crank? It's a common fault on these cars.

2270.2Good old BLPAKORA::BHAILEMon Jun 13 1994 08:409
    May be miles off here but on my old mk3 spitfire there used to be a
    thrower disk at the inside front of the gearbox. The theory is that
    when you are stationary the oil level is below the aperture at the
    front and can't leak. When you are moving the disc rotates and
    although the oil is sloshed about it is thrown away from the aperture
    by the disc. Good old BL didn't consider what happens when you park on
    a downward facing slope. I know... I had to replace my oil fouled
    clutch.... Are you parking facing down hill by any chance?

2270.3NO not crank ... fortunatelyESSB::DOODYMon Jun 13 1994 13:5017
    re -2 Luckily It's not leaking from g'box end of crank - But I've had
          That problem so bad it used to dump all the oil on the ground
          If you drove anyway fast. (When you stopped a huge oil puddle
    would appear from the bellhousing - apparently the cure is to drill
     out the oil return holes) When I started driving this car I left the
    old oil in the sump for a few days, it was then I noticed the clean oil
    leaking through the bell housing spilt pin.

    re - 1 I think you may be correct about the front oil 'seal' at the
    rere theres a rubber seal into which the driveshaft fits, the splined
    gearbox 3rd motion shaft? starts out in a big bearing and runs through
    a long phosphor-bronze bushing - there is some play in this shaft
    so maybe thats where my problems lie...

    cheers,
