1992.0. "Left-hand drive garages." by SAC::WARBURTON () Mon Jan 18 1993 16:54

    Hi everybody

I need help. I am trying to rid myself of a left-hand drive old
french car which I stupidly brought back to the UK with me on returning
home from France, and which I am now having major difficulties getting
rid of, in exchange for a new english car. The prices I've been quoted
for my car, as part-exchange for a new one, are downright insults to my
little car which slogged her guts out getting me here from Geneva. As
you can tell, I'm rather attached to her !

Apparently there are garages in London which deal specifically in
    left-hand drive cars.

I don't suppose anybody would know who/where these garages are, and
could anybody supply me with a phone number ?

Many thanks in advance from someone who is desperate to get behind the
    wheel of her brand-new Rover.

    Julie.

Try the Exchange and Mart, in the "Left-hand drive cars" section... I
seem to recall there's a garage specialising in lhd cars somewhere in
    Hampshire.

Bear in mind that the prices for lhd cars in the UK are crap, which is
why so many Brits living abroad buy thir cars there. Don't expect to
    get much for it...

    Laurie.

Also, just to confirm something...

You will need to import the car first. You may be getting bad prices due to the
fact that the garage will need to import it... if you import it, your prices
may improve.

Garages are giving terrible trade-ins at the moment - even for RHD,
I just got quoted 2,750 for a 3.5 year old 2.0gti Montego, with
35,000 on the clock. Adverts in garages have them going from 5,000 to
	5,500 for "low mileage".

I'm going to sell it privately, and if I don't get what I want, I'll
keep it a couple of years more, and put the 7,000 grand I have
accumulated for trade-in, in the BS or elsewhere.

Salesman - of course it's the "i" on the end madam, the insurance is
	really heavy on these cars..................

Me - but my insurance is only 350

Salesman - but the youngsters will get hit really hard for an "i" for
	their insurance.

Me - Look, this is a family saloon, the people buying it are not likely
 	to be XR2i/3i/astra type people.

Salesman - yes, but the insurance is still really high, so we won't be
able to shift the car, I could give you 3,000 if you sign up today.
(why give me anything if they couldn't shift the car?)

Me - Well, in that case, I'll keep it for another 2 years - goodbye.

Salesman shouting after me - well, do you have enough money to buy the
car outright, you won't need to trade-in then.

I continued walking, wondering if they really thought I would be so
	stupid.

Salesman shouting after me, even louder - I could push it out to 3250

Heather - still with her Montego
1992.5LHD market in Basingstoke!!KERNEL::LOANEComfortably numb!!Mon Jan 18 1993 18:286
There's a house in Chineham (that's Basingstoke area) which does a
brisk trade in selling/buying LHD motors....there's always a few
hanging about and a lot of prospective punters drive up in cars
with CD plates. I saw an ad in Exchange and Mart with an 0256 phone
number but never got round to checking if the two were one and the
    same!!

I'm in Basingstoke and I know where Chineham is. I'll have a scout
    around tonight. Thanks.

Well, thanks to those that replied and tried to help me with my
    plight !

In the end, I got fed up of dealing with garages and phoned one final
garage and attempted to strike up some sort of deal.

I rang the SEAT garage in Basingstoke, explained that I had a left-hand
drove french registered SEAT, that I wanted a Rover 214 SLi, that I
wanted not much less than 950 quid for my car (as that is about what
I'd get for her if I sold her in France!) and that if they couldn't
help me, not to bother calling back.

A couple of days later, he rang me back with a nice price for the
Rover, a nice enough price for my car which was not insulting, and so I
    agreed to the deal.

Apparently, he knows someone who will buy my car, give it the once-over
and sell it to a squaddie or some such person, who happens to work
abroad. And on the subject of the importation, it'll cost me nothing
excpet a bit of my time for paperwork. The garage will MOT it and tax
it for about a month to get english plates on it, so they can sell it
    on to this other person.

And I get my new car on Friday, and I'm dead excited !

    Julie.

    Julie,

It wouldn't have cost you anything to import it anyway, apart from a
few quid to pay for the documents and plates.

Congrats on selling it though... you'll have to let us know what the
    Rover's like.

1992.10garages that deal with lhdULYSSE::GALLACHERThu May 09 1996 18:0015
    Hi,

can anyone give me any advice about buying a lhd car in Britain. I'm in
France most of the time and would want to bring it over here.

Does anyone know of any garages that deal specifically with LHD?
I'm more interested in a used car. Someone earlier mentioned a garage
in North London and one in Hampshire. Has anyone got the phone numbers?

I put this in the small questions note, then noticed this...

    thanks for any help,
    Linda

There's a garage in Basingstoke that deals solely in LHD cars. I forget
the name, but they advertise regularly in the Exchange & Mart; perhaps
someone in the UK would look them up for you.

    Cheers, Laurie.

Look, I know this is going to sound dumb but...

If you spend most of your time in France, and you want a LHD drive car,
oh forget I spoke, I'm obviously missing something.

I'll say it for you Andrew.

If you spend most of your time in France, and you want a LHD drive car,
why not buy one in France. There would be a lot more choice ?
