1516.0. "Gungy Caps!" by CRISPY::GERRYT () Thu Jul 25 1991 16:20

    Recently had new head-gasket & core-plugs put into cylinders on my VW.
    Now finding a lot of rust coloured "gunge" deposited/floating around
    the filler cap area of the radiator.

    Could it be the strength of the Anti-freeze causing the deposits to
    come loose ?
    Any danger signs in this sort of display?

    thanks,

	I think that the oil and the hot water do some horrible things to
	each other, resulting in this froth. Is the froth a sort of discoloured
	beer head ?

    If your garage only changed the head gasket they may not of drained
    down the cooling system compleatly.First before having the head off
    again I would drain down the cooling system and flush it through.
    Refill the system again and see what appears, if you get the white
    sticky froth aroung the cap then you most certainly have oil
    contaminating the cooling system water. I've had bits of muck in the
    expansion tank on my Metro for years (must clean it out one day)with no
    problems.

    Sorry, haven't been into the Notes files for a time.

    Yes, the 'head' on the water is a rust-coloured froth.
    Haven't checked it out recently again though.
    There are no overheating problems noe...but will check water
    consumption.

    Thanks.

1516.6Anyone for rusty Big-ends ?SUBURB::JASPERTTue Sep 17 1991 16:034
    What is potentially more serious is water entering the sump &
    contaminating the engine, I hope you had the oil & filter changed at
    the same time! If not, suggest engine is flushed with Flushing Oil.
