1491.1My God ! A CAR from Korea ?!?!RUTILE::GUESTSomeoneMon Jul 08 1991 13:3514

    What an informative question. Would you care to specify at least North or
    South ?

    Perhaps the name of the car you saw, or even the name of the
    manufacturer ?

    (Korea has been making cars for a bit longer than you may have
    realised.)

    The car in question is probably the new Kia Pride. It is a licensed
    version of the old Mazda 121, but Kia will be selling it for less than
    Mazda ever did.

1491.3Hyundai?CRISPY::GERRYTTue Jul 09 1991 19:009
    What? not the Hyundai?

    They have a new model out just now. Haven't seen anything about it
    though.
    Brother had a Pony 1.5 on loan whilest his ISUZU was being serviced.
    Was impressed, but thought the internals a bit plasticky.

1491.5How old are they?AYOV27::ISMITHOff to Severance CityWed Jul 10 1991 14:286
    Neither Hyundai nor Panther are new manufacturers, Kia (as far as I am
    aware) is, at least from the point of view of selling cars here. Does
    anyone happen to know how long they have been around in Korea?

>And don't forget that Panthers are also made in Korea...
I thought they were assembled in Byfleet, although the parent company is Korean.

    Ian,

    re.5

    As far as I know, the following is the true.

    Kia are not exactly the newest vehicle manufacturer in Korea, they are
    the oldest. They were formed in 1944, but made only commercial vehicles
    until 1974. they also make the Capital and Concord (Mazda 626 based).

    Other Koreans are SMC, Asia, Daewoo, Gaz and Hyundai.

    If you really like trivia, include Kia in the list and spot the odd one
    out!

    Thankyou .1 for that lovely informative reply....I'm sorry I didn't
    have my nose buried into a book telling me all about the Korean car
    manufacturers...I hope I can ask another question another day & get as
    much information again!!!
    	Thankyou everyone else for the info,I shall now take a step back
    never to ask another question.I did read an article in auto express
    which was quite interesting.The reason for the original question was
    I'd heard a few things being bandied about in the press & talking like
    there was a new wonder car suddenly being produced in Korea.

    Well, i admit that .1 was maybe a bit OTT, and my knowledge of the
    Korean car industry is not what it could be :-).

    BUT, to answer questions does require a bit of info to work on.

    NOT everyone reads Auto-express (or the other papers you read). What
    did they say that made it sound as though a wonder car was being
    produced ?

    Oh,I'm ever so sorry,I thought we were all psychic!!!:-)))

    Anyway,the only reason I didn't give the name was because I hadn't
    read anything about the car (or the manufacturer) & I couldn't
    remember the name......However,no problem,I am now enlightened (thanks
    to my other psychic friends) & am back in happy smiley land..
