1325.0. "Reading to/from Charlton" by VOGON::BALL (...and a Happy New Year to the lot of you!) Wed Jan 02 1991 18:38

I'm going to be driving between Reading and Charlton in Southeast London quite a
few times over the next few months and I wondered if anyone had any ideas on the
best route to use?

The obvious ways are M4/A4 into Central London then pop over one of the bridges
round there eg Westminster Bridge or going on the South Circular nearly all the
way from the end of the M4. Both of these take a long time: does anybody know
anything better?

I won't be attempting this during the rush hour. I would guess the South
Circular would be quicker in the daytime and going through the centre would be
quicker at night.

1325.1Of course, if it's not near Woolwich...RUTILE::SMITH_ANo-one puts baby in the cornerThu Jan 03 1991 13:5214
If memory serves, Charlton is near Woolwich isn't it ?

If you're not in the rush-hour then I'd suggest M4 into central London,
Hyde Park Corner to Victoria then across the Westminster Bridge.
Through Lambeth to the Elephant and Castle, then down the Old Kent Road
    to Woolwich and Charlton.

Alternatively, from central London, stay on the north of the River
Thames, down the Embankment, through the City, through the East End (I
know Den's a ba**ard Cath', but I love 'im. Da da da de da da da) to
the Blackwall Tunnel, then through the tunnel and back to Woolwich and
    Charlton.

I go along with the second alternative in -.1

Stay north on the north embankment, to the city (bank etc),
onto the East India Dock rd until the Blackwell tunnel. It may not
be good, but must be better than the south circular.
