1113.0. "NOISY FUEL PUMP" by SIOG::ODONNELL () Wed Jun 13 1990 16:18

    Hi all,
About 2 weeks ago my car (orion 1.6i) developed a noisy fuel
pump this oddly enough only happens when i have approx 60-70
miles left in the tank, also if i have to swerve sharply the car
appears to suffer from fuel starvation & it recovers when i'am back
on the straight.I sent the car to a garage & they diagnosed a faulty
fuel pump which was relpaced.Again the problem re-occured their
diagnosis this time a D.O.A.fuel pump ( sounds kinda familiar !!!).
Again the pump was replaced & you can guess what. The noise
is back again.Has anyone out there come across this type of problem
& if so is there a SOLUTION to it.

                                               Regards

                                                  Brendan

    Ps.

Doesn't matter how much fuel is in tank...
1113.3Same problem on my RS ......UKCSSE::BATTARBEEJOHN BATTARBEEFri Jun 15 1990 12:3214
I have an RS TURBO and suffered the same problem during the last HOT
spell of weather a few weeks back. I took it to my local FORD dealer
    who stated ....

Theres nothing wrong with it sir, and it wont let you down !! We will
of course replace it, but it will only do it again. He also stated that
ALL fuel pumps are now being mounted << INSIDE >> the fuel tank on all
injection and Turbo models, but didnt know why.

Since the last spell of hot weather I have not experienced this high
pitched Buzzing noise .... so my advice is .... Forget it and dont
waste time and money getting it replaced.

    Re-1

I forgot to say how to cure it whemn it happens!,

The best thing that worked was when it happened to a friend of mine in
a high street once after a long stop/start journey on a hot day. He
calmly pushed the car to the side of the road, nipped into a
supermarket, bought a bag of frozen peas, and then applied said packet
to the fuel pump, taking care not to melt the packet. This then cooled
the pump down, and after 15 mins the car started again. He told me that
he got alot of strange looks standong there holding this bag onto the
    engine of a Beetle!

NB I am told that half a grapefruit works just as well!

    Hello ,
My brother got once the same noisy fuel pump problem on a OPEL GSE.
He did the same mistake and replaced it.... same problem , then he
asked me and I just recomended him to replace the FUEL FILTER which is
fit somewhere between the pump and the injection device ...
    The problem disapeared.

Try it if they did not replace the filter first.
    Let me know bye bye
    SERGE.
