1085.0. "XR3i Oil/Petrol Consumption?" by ESSB::DOODY (3 Cylinders Good- 4 Cylinders bad) Thu May 24 1990 15:11

    I have just bought a 1989 Escort Xr3i
    I have two questions:

      1) Oil Consumption : Do they use oil?
                           If so how much?
Whats the recommended type of oil?

      2) Fuel consumption : Typical MPG ?
                            Should I switch to Leaded?

    Thanksinadvance,

       Brian.

    My 1988 XR3i, 45,000 miles (leased).

Has it's oil changed every 6000 miles but there is certainly no drop in
oil levels over that period, which is about 3 months.

Petrol consumption on Un-Leaded is about 30 - 35 MPG but that is
    driving it quite hard.

On long holiday trips it has given 40 MPG easily.

Getting slightly bored with it now. I'll have another one when they put
    a real engine in it.!..........

    Hi,

I took over the lease of an '89 XR3i 4 months ago, and have covered
6000 miles in it (in fact it's just had its 18000 mile service today
    !).

Its a first time starter, and if the next 6000 miles are as troulbe
free, I'll be well pleased. I keep a close watch on mpg and the overall
consumption is 37 mpg, but I travel mostly on motorways doing a steady
70 mph, obviously in town this drops, but i've never had a monthly
average of less than 35 mpg. I have never needed to top up the oil and
it runs on unleaded, you should check however to see if your car has
    been converted.

    Thanks All,

I bought the car without really checking fuel consumption
but to reaffirm your experiences it seems to be returning
somewhere in the mid thirties MPG (This is based on ~1 weeks
ownership). Its my first time to own a 'Hot hatch' of any type
so I am well pleased with it so far.
