1029.0. "Upgrade Speakers on Montego?" by LARVAE::BRIGGS (They use computers don't they?) Wed Apr 18 1990 13:45

I just got a lease Montego with top of the range Philips stereo and I'm
disappointed. I suspect the speakers are the standard fitted ones as
the bass lacks precision and treble is poor (even has tweeters in the
door). This is not to say its BAD just not what you'd expect from a top
    range 6 speaker stereo system.

I suspect it must be easy to upgrade the speakers. Anyone got an idea
on cost? Is there a significant benefit to be had?

    Richard,
I know this may be late but I've just seen your note and to
    my shock (no one replied!!)

I may be able to help..There's a place in Basingstoke called
TECHNE tel: 0256 812990. They have all makes of decent speakers from
Kenwood (from 30 pounds) to JBL (from 80 pounds). They stock kenwood,
    Alpine, JBL, Denon etc etc....

These guys have only been going for about 1 year and are very
helpfull. As for upgrading your speakers, each brochure has a guide
showing you what custom made speakers will fit in your car.

It really depends on what you want...!! I have bought a pair
of kenwood dual cone speakers and have put those in the doors. Lots of
people wouldn't put speakers in the doors because of obvious reasons
but I feel they sound 100% better in doors rather than pods.

For christmas I have bought a limited edition of JBL's which
are rear shelf speakers. JBL where experimenting with these and in the
shops they are being sold for 100 pounds + VAT. Peake handling power is
360 watts each and RMS 180 watts !! cheap for a speaker of this
caliber. But be quick only 1,500 have been produced.

If I was you I'd have either Alpine or JBL....
