993.0. "Sandhurst-Crowthorne Bypass ?" by CSSD::LOWE (Jerry Lowe - CSO South UK) Tue Mar 27 1990 17:27

    Driving into Reading the other day I came accross a new development that
    claimed to be the "Sandhurst-Crowthorne" bypass.

    This would seem to be very useful since Sandhurst and Crowthorne are
    definitely places to be avoided from a traffic point of view.

    Does anyone know where this bypass goes from/to ? A quick route from
    Blackwater to the A329M would be ideal.

    The first bit has already been built. Down by Blackwater, a dual
    carriageway has been constructed around the new Tesco/M&S superstores
    and most of Sandhurst.

    This shortish section of dual carriageway intersects the A30 at
    a new, quite enormous, roundabout. The thing rivals Hyde Park corner,
    and its a typical road planners cock up (IMHO). The dual carriageway
    then carries on to Farnborough and the M3.

    I think I'll move from Camberley, whilst the going's good.

    The bit that I came accross was on the road from Crowthorne to
    Bracknell, towards the Bracknell end, where a large Rounderbout was
    being constructed.

    I agree about the A30 Blackwater rounderbout. It looks like a good
    recipe for an accident.

    You're quite right - it is a link road to the A329M - part of the
    same master plan as the new overpass at the Bracknell end of the
    329M.

    Apparently the theory is to get some of the traffic off the M25
    by funnelling it through Bracknell. Quite how it will do this I
    don't know - it seems like a long way round to me.

    If you lok at a map, you'll see that M4 -> M25 South & East in fact
    goes quite a long way North.

    M4 -> A329(M) -> M3 -> M25 is shorter (and sounds like it may soon
    be reliably quicker).
