606.0. "Stainless Steel Exhaust Companies" by COUNTY::WATSON (When the going gets weird...) Mon May 22 1989 22:51

Does anyone know a reputable stainless steel exhaust manufacturer/vendor ?

I need a new set of pipes for my 323i and have just been quoted over a grand for
one from Birds ( Hartge dealership ). "It adds 8bhp and makes the car drive
smoother" says the man. I should bloody well hope it does at that price. I can
buy 5 mild steel systems for that and I don't suppose I'd notice the lack off
poke. In the last 70k miles it seems quite pokey enough.

I won't tell you what he said about new brakes but it involved bigger callipers
and ducts to help the cooling. :-o

What a rip off !

What ever happened to stainless steel replacement exhaust systems ?
They were hailed as the answer to periodic replacements, but then all
    publicity ceased.

    Are they still available ?
Do they last long enough to make them feasable ?
Have they been priced-out by Qick-Fitt, who would dearly like you to
return after 13 months for another #130-quids-worth of latent rust ?
    What companies sell them ?
The only disadvantages I can see are maybe they're not as quiet as
    their steel/rust equivalents.

What does the panel think ?

    Tony.

a friend bought a stainless system for his MGB, it rusted. Some, I
believe are not that stainless. The Marlin has a stainless box and
some of the pipes, but not the manifold. It's lasting very well.

In 18 years of owning Volvo's I've tried everything from bog standard
exhausts to stainless steel exhausts from various vendors. The ONLY
systems that have lasted well (and been quiet) have been genuine Volvo
systems. These cost 50-100% more than anything on the high street but
work out cheaper over time. I'm not even sure these are stainless steel
as they are promoted (last time I looked) as 'aluminized' whatever that
    means.

I read something a few years ago about how unleaded petrol made your
exhaust last longer. Apparently some of the additives in leaded petrol
produce small amounts of hydrochloric (I think) acid.

I'll see if I can find the reference.
