84.0. "Baby seat...sports cars...mutually exclusive?" by 52256::MATTHEWS (Tant pis...) Fri Feb 26 1988 12:09

Does anyone know if it is legal in the UK to have a baby seat fitted
in the front seat of a sports car ???

If not, does anyone know of a company who makes a baby seat which
would fit in the back of one. We have an MGB roadster and have tried
the Britax seat we use in our 'normal' car, but if won't fit on
the ledge behind the seats if the hood is fitted. I will fit on
the passenger seat, and can be held in by the front seat belt, but
I'm not too sure about the legal aspects of this. I know that you
can fit the rear facing baby seats in the front seat, but the lad
is a bit too big for one of those now.

    All information welcome

    Regards
    Mark

Having strayed into this note (honest!), I thought I'd mention a
fitment I saw in a Marcos.

The Marcos doesn't have ANYTHING behind the back seats (except the
rear axle!) and so would seem totally unsuited to a baby seat, but
one adventurous owner (possibly after threats of 'get rid of the car'
from his wife :^)) managed to fit a normal (front facing) baby seat
on the bulkhead between the seats and on top of the transmission
tunnel. What he'll do once the baby is too big for a baby seat, I
don't know, but a perspex window in the bootlid would make the boot
    a fairly reasonable 'Dicky-seat'!!! :^)

When we sold the RX-7 Cabrio the guy buying it quoted his reason for
buying as "I can rip out the rear trim and get a baby seat in here -
it's one of the very few two seater sports cars that you can do that
    in ..."

Great reason for buying a car :-)
