| This is a pretty thought-provoking idea, in a completely theoretical
sense. The closest thing I can think of would be picking the players
for the Olympic basketball team. However, in the case of music, it's
much more difficult to pick a reasonable union since what we're talking
about is art. As the failings of the super-groups indicate, the music
usually suffers when you put together the "ultimate" band. Of course,
there is the additional difficulty in that bands are not a fixed
quantity or combination of musicians. In basketball, you know you have
2 guards, 2 forwards and a center. Would my All-star band have 2
guitars? Probably not. (In reality, I might even like an All-star band
with no guitars).
Here's a whack at defining a band which is made up of my current crop
of favorite musicians (in a five piece lineup, with keys and no
second guitar):
guitar......................... Trevor Rabin
bass .......................... Tony Levin
vocals ........................ Charlie Farren
drums ......................... Bill Bruford
keys .......................... Dave Stewart
(the "other" Dave Stewart).
Of course, Charlie Farren would also play guitar. Obviously,
most of my lineup comes from people who have played with Yes,
which is no coincidence. I'm not sure what these people would
play if stuffed together in a room, but frankly, I doubt I'd
like it. The sum of the parts, vs. the sum of the whole, and
all that stuff...

This is very difficult. Part of the challenge is to try to invent a
band where the member's styles would be artistically complimentary. Rock band
is a team sport! Also, there probably should be one or two in the band that
can write.
