| I loathe Deaf Leopard, but saw a video last night while channel
hopping. I think the song was something deep like "Let's Get Rocked".
Anyway, does anyone know who did the animation and 3-D graphics? I
suspect it may have been Silicon Graphics (they did _Total Recall_),
but I didn't recognize the icons on the various screens they showed.
Thanks,
Mark.

Actually, she's scheduled to be on this week. At least that's

How does the 'wrist band program' work - I mean after you've got it on?
My sweetheart has one for Bruce (sorry all four are spoken for) for
Saturday morning at the Centrum. The tickets go on sale at 10:00 a.m.

How does it work?

| My experience has been that the number is random and the line starts at a given
number and goes up to the last one then starts again at 1. I'm not sure if
Centrum wrist bands are given out in order or not.
The random numbers discourage people from hanging around to get wrist band #1.
Don't remove the wrist band. If it has been tampered with you won't be able to
buy tickets. This is to prevent you from selling a guaranteed place in line.
I would say that you probably want to arrive around 1 hour before tickets go on
sale. You probably could arrive later, but getting there as late as 9 and
having a decent place in line isn't too bad. Hopefully it won't be raining...

I'm not into a lot of the acts that play the big venues, but it is a
drag to think that the ones I *would* like to see (U2, Stones, Clapton,
McCartney etc.) are too expensive and too tough to get tickets to. I
passed on Van Morrison this year when I found out that tickets would be
over $30...after I pay the babysitter, tolls, parking, etc. I woulda
been out $100! The last two arena shows I went to (Clapton and Willie
Nelson at the Worcester, MA Centrum in the early 80s) were very
unsatisfying experiences.
It's not just pop music, I wish I had a trust fund to buy BSO tickets,
but I don't. I thank God for the wide variety of free shows in this
area that I can take my family to and expose my children to great music
without becoming homeless in the process.
I had to be an old fart, but the first arena show I went to was in
1970, I paid $3 and the minimum wage at the time was $3.25. Now the
minimum wage is what, about $4-5, and concerts are over $25 a pop!

| Yeah, Brian, I remeber seeing Sly & The Family Stone back in 1969 or
whatever at a big old hangar on the old Mitchell Field complex that is
now some big Coliseum on Long Island. Who remembers what I paid, but
even getting tickets to see the Airplane at the Fillmore East on
Thanksgiving 1970 did not require an act of congress! I try to expose
my kids to as much live music as they are old enough to get in to, but
I feel bad for the people trying to see big name live acts today,
myself included.

Yes ticket prices are certainly a factor as well as availability
which in the case of the U2 seems to have been an act in itself.
Back some years ago while working third shift it was easy to head
off in the morning to get tickets. Yea, there's the charge lines
but I tend to stay away from those outlets.
There's also the factors of intimacy, access to the concert in terms
of how far you travel to a particular show, parking and other hassles
that can go with it, getting out of the parking lot or simply filing
out for that matter, not everyone can have good or even practical
viewing seats, circular stages I guess help a bit, etc.
I give the Guns n' Roses crew some credit for the satellite show from
Paris that they're doing. It will give many people who would
otherwise not see them.
Any band who sells upwards of millions of records clearly only a
small percentage must get to see you live so this is a way of at
least allowing many to see a show. Although some of my past
experience of seeing an enjoyable large venue show followed by later
viewing of a video of the same event hardly mange to capture the
event or feeling.
Those of you who mentioned opening your kids up to as much music as
possible I think that's great.
In the cases of some bands who one month are playing a small club
then pass by shortly after to play a larger place usually then end
up supporting some other more popular band in which case I can see
why even some fans of the band would not have an interest to go,
even excluding all the other factors especially if you've already
seen them during an early leg of the tour.
In the case of old favorites who might now play nothing but large
places it could be you've seen then enough times already, no longer
care for them, no longer like their new material or if you still do
would only go out of way to see them if they were to play a small
club. I recall about 5 years ago when Clapton played the then Metro
in Boston, now Avalon ( I say that club has grown over the years,
it used to be much smaller) it was easy to get up front of stage, hard
to imagine even getting good reasonably priced tickets to anyone like
this at a large show.
There's not too many established performers like this that do the
small venue thing but from time to time you might catch one.
There's also more planning that tends to go into it larger shows
where the small clubs you get head to a show that evening in many
cases.
As for teens and money, I know I has less debt then...

| I won't go to arena-type shows anymore. There's plenty of good
stuff playing in clubs where you can actually see the band and
have decent sound. Of course, some of the club prices aren't that
cheap anymore, either.
It's actually tougher for the kids. My S.O.'s 13 year old daughter
has wonderfully eclectic taste in music (Beatles, Pink Floyd, Doors,
Clapton, all the way up to Guns and Roses, Metallica, Extreme, and
Nirvana). Unfortunately, practically the only way she can see live
music is at the big arena-type shows. The clubs won't let her in
because she's underage. There are a few bars in the area that have
live music on weekend afternoons that will let us bring her in, but
that's certainly the exception.

Small nit, I started working in 1973 at the minimum wage, it was
$1.85 just raised from $1.65. In 1970 it wasn't unusual for house
hold breadwinners to be making a decent wage at $3.25. I may be
off by a few months and a couple of nickels but not that much.
1972, Oakland Ca. $10.00 bought you Crosby Stills Nash and Young,
Joe Walsh and Barnstorm, The Band with Bob Dylan as well as Jessie
Collin Young. No problem walking up and buying tickets at the door.
Clapton that same summer across the bay at the Cow Palace $3.00.
I did get tickets ahead of time, the day before the show. No lines,
no madness, the show did sell out.

| RE: Last few
What's single and what you hear on the radio are often two different
things. Though you made have heard every song on the Meatloaf album, I
believe that only 3 singles were actually release. If memory server, I
believe Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely" was never a single... just
a real popular album cut.
It is to the record companies advantage to release only a few singles
from a record, but have a lot of the cuts receive airplay. This
stimulates more album sales if the only way to get the song is by
buying the entire album. If you were a record company which would you
rather sell a million singles or a million albums?... oh pardon me, dumb
question! In the case of Janet Jackson's _Rhythm_Nation_, I read that
a decision was made not to release any more tracks as singles to the
public, because after 6 or 7 singles the return on investment of
pressing a new single was not enough to warrant the addition (if any)
album sales that would be generated.
As for the duration of time between single release, I've noticed of
over the last year that "stacking singles" (releasing 2 singles almost
simultaneously) has been a lot more prevalent, for instance,
Prince, U2, Hammer, etc. the explanation I read for why Prince did it
(beside the fact that he's a desperate artist past his prime... but hey
we don't have to get into that) was to promote the two singles to
different markets. For instance, "Get Off" was aimed at (so called)
Black radio, while "Cream" was targeted at Pop/Top 40 radio. This
makes sense.. with both demographic (yuck!) segments marching to the
record store at the same time, the album sales would happen much
quicker and stronger than if the singles were marketed in some sort of
disjointed fashion.
remember marketing is everything in the record business or do I need to
remind you that Milli Vannili sold 10 Million records...
RE: B.A.
_BAD_ did better than _Thriller_ in respect to the fact that the first
five songs from _BAD_ chart to #1 in the U.S. However, the 6th single
"Another Part of Me" failed to make it into the top 10. This ended
Mike's streak of top 10's at 17 in a row. In the end _BAD_ only produced
6 top 10's as opposed to the 7 top 10's from _Thriller_.
NOTE: "Leave Me Alone" from Mike's _BAD_ was never a single. they
released the video to MTV et al to try and cash in on additional album
sales.

Not sure which side you're taking, but I'd rather hear 2 or 3
singles that are released at the same time than have my brain
saturated by 1 single at a time. At least this way the songs
only appear 1/4 as often in the typical "new rotation" that's
prevalent in Top-40 radio as they would otherwise.
True, the artist appears just as often, but for different songs.

| Re: last few
From Elvis Pressley to Elvis Hitler, the way "hits" were classified
changed quite a bit. when I talk about hits, I'm generally referring
to a song that appears on some national charting magazine (e.g,
Billboard, Cashbox, Record World, etc.). I can speak mostly from my
experience with Billboard. The Hot 100 in Billboard is a song chart,
not a singles chart, that is compiled from rankings of sales and
airplay. Usually a song cannot score very high on the chart without
both components (sales and airplay) being very strong. BTW, the
current method of ranking songs on the Billboard Hot 100 has changed
within the last year, but the basic premise remains the same. (Note:
that the Billboard Country Chart is *airplay only*. Not surprisingly,
most country artist not longer release singles to the public to promote
albums)
Back in the Elvis Pressley days you had radio stations eager for the
Rock'n'Roll product playing as much of it as possible. thus airplay of
both sides of the single resulted in lots of double-sided hit
singles. As more rock product became available (circa 1960's & 70's),
the radio program director had a wider variety of artist to chose from
and thus airplay of B-sides generally fell into the dumper. This was
also before FM and those wonderful AOR stations that played whole album
sides appeared on the scene and changed the name of the game.
Occasionally, today, a single's B-side will accrue enough airplay to
chart with a life of it's own. for instance Prince's "Hot Thang" or
Paula Abdul's "Cold Hearted".

| Other albums that have had a bunch of top ten singles:
Carole King Tapestry
Debbie Gibson Out of the Blue
Wilson Philips Wilson Philips
Just goes to show that if you find a formula and record the same song
sideways, you can have a bunch of hits in quick succession.
A related topic might be how many groups have released a follow up hit
single that has an almost identical chord sequence and melody to the

Not very difficult to fathom really, since during the time the Drifters
and Chiffons (among others) were popular, there were effectively 3
chord progressions ever used: I-IV-V, I-vi-ii-V, and I-vi-IV-V. Think
about it.

| Greetings-
My speakers make me sad. It's time for a new pair. I wonder if I
might solicit some advice as to which speakers I should buy.
- $200-$250/pair price range
- looking for good sound, not huge speaker cabinets
- I listen to blues, jazz, rock, classical, reggae . . .
- I only crank it up *sometimes* (y'know, you get in that MOOD)
Thanks & Peace,
David

Thanks,

224.62 | Musician Magazine's "Marketing" Practices | SSDEVO::LAMBERT | Sam, Subsystems Engineering @CXO | Mon Jul 25 1994 18:12 | 14 |
| Has anyone else had this experience recently? I received a "complimentary"
copy of _Musician_ magazine in the mail, with a card saying something to
the effect of, "Gee, our computer has been all screwed up recently, and we
think you may have sent in an order for a subscription (I hadn't), so
here's a free copy. If you like it, let us know." A month later I got a
bill from them for a year's subscription. Although they did give the
option of "just write 'cancel' on the bill and return it if you don't want
it" it struck me as just short of mail fraud. So has this happened to
anyone else recently?
Thanks,

impressed when a bill showed up in my mailbox last night.
This may be a bit of a soapbox but I don't believe I should have to put
any effort into canceling a subscription that I never signed up for in
the first place.

I thought the laws on this were pretty clear, maybe I'm mistaken. I
thought that any solicitation required a pro-active action on your
part to be complete. And that any solicitation that required a
pro-active action to cancel or nullify a sale was illegal, and that
most of the bills that sounded like you needed to cancel to not get a
bill were garbage and you could throw them away.
I.e. you don't have to do anything to cancel a bill on the types of
solicitation talked about here. You simply don't have a bill in
the eyes of the law.

I used to be in a record/cd club that did that.
I kept getting cd's sent to me , Micheal Jackson - Whitney Houston
ect and argued till I was blue in the face with them about them sending
me stuff I didn't want - I just gave them back to the postman and quit
the club - I would have stayed in the club if I didn't have to put up
with that.

That's different than what they're saying, unless I misunderstood.
You *joined* a club. They asked, you said "yes," and the rules were
that they'd send you stuff that you would have to pay for unless you
sent it back. Stinky set-up, but you did join.
They sound like they're talking about getting mail from mags that say
"Here, you're subscribed, cancel if you don't want the bill." That's
illegal, I think, and I'm betting that there's weasel-words hidden
somewhere in the literature that tells them they're not really bound
(even though the mags want them to think they are).

| I agree that legally there was no contract, but that's not going to stop
them from sending you invoice after invoice until they threaten to and
then put it into the hands of a collector. Ignoring the bills, though
one is under no obligation to do otherwise, isn't going to necessarily
make them stop. If you ask me, their position of acting as though there
is contract, which is what they seem to be doing, is deceitful and
fraudulent. And I'd bet the AG would agree.

224.71 | Sounds right to me | SSDEVO::LAMBERT | Sam, Subsystems Engineering @CXO | Wed Jul 27 1994 17:24 | 13 |
| Yes, as far as I know, what has been stated regarding unsolicited-then-
billed-for material is correct. Damn, should've thought of that before
I returned the bill with "cancel" on it. :-)
And also yes, I believe the opinion on the record/CD club is correct,
too. You sign a contract when you sign up for the club. Even Columbia
House does this. "We're going to send you this CD in two weeks. If you
DON'T want it return this card now."
Thanks for clarifying and reinforcing my opinion.

224.72 | Beware of subscription cards used as entry forms | DREGS::BLICKSTEIN | Leave it to Beevis | Wed Jul 27 1994 19:05 | 22 |
| I had something similar happen to me.
I play in a lot of USVBA volleyball tournaments. Recently companies
have started to do a fair amount of marketing at tournaments. They
bring products, give out samples, etc for folks to look at.
They also run contests. In many of these tournaments, your contest
entry form was one of those insert subscription cards that every
magazine out there seem to stuff into every issue. This one was
for Volleyball magazine.
We were assured that the cards would not be sent to the magazine but
used merely as "entry forms" which were picked out of the box (the
winners won stuff like towels, sneakers, ice packs, etc.)
About 10 months ago, I started getting issues of the magazine. I never
paid and the notices started getting nasty and threatening. So I sent
a note back to them about 4 months ago saying "I never subscribed" and
the issues stopped coming and I haven't heard from them since but it
occurred to me that they might well have a card that I filled out.

A&M Records was named for Herb Alpert (of the Tijuana Brass fame) and
Jerry Moss - I believe JM was Herb's producer.

Should we find a dealer, sell privately, or go through a record store
