Not to be putting down the U of M, Bob, but I don't recall ever
seeing them in the Top 20. Have they ever made it to the WS?
The WS is usually most of the same group of teams every year (and
they're mostly the "warmer climate" teams).
A couple of years ago Oklahoma State set a record for the most
appearances in the WS. [Since OSU has never won it then that also
makes them the "biggest losers in the WS". 8^( ]

| I realize that New England college baseball isn't great as a whole
but there are some good teams up here. Maine, however, is sort
of in a class by itself.
Maine battles tougher weather than any other school in New England
playing a major college schedule. The weather is probably similar
to that faced by the Midwest college powers such as Michigan and
Minnesota. Like most New England teams, they don't even get outside
until they go on their spring break trip.
Maine is the only New England school to play a full 60-game schedule.
One thing that helps is that UMaine has a two-week spring break.
The Baseball team leaves early, comes back late and this year played
something like 23 games on their spring break. They don't play
any poor teams either.
Maine will very often play doubleheaders throughout the spring on
Friday, Saturday and Sunday; they are the only New England school
to do so. Most of those games are on the road because of their
weather. And UMaine is a 3.5 - 4 hour drive from their nearest
league member, the University of New Hampshire.
Before going into league tournament play, Maine usually plays a
big home series against a major school from elsewhere in the country.
Last year, it was UCLA. Two years ago, it was Miami.
Maine has terrific fans. I only travelled up there for football
twice, never for baseball, but for a school which at the time was
dreadful in football, no one had better backing. Their baseball
crowds are legendary and I've seen the support give to their hockey
team.
Maine has a great coach in John Winkin. He won a phenomenal amount
of games, first at Colby College and then at Maine, where he's been
since 1977. He took over a terrific program from a man named Jack
Butterfield, who left to become a front office executive with the
Yankees and tragically died in a car accident shortly after getting
the job.
One of the things that's hurt Maine over the last couple of years
has been the move away from straight geographic seeding for the
CWS by the NCAA. It's made the road tougher for Maine as it has
for the rest of the schools in the northeast.
I would say that given the obstacles they have - weather, travel
and overall lack of talent in New England - John Winkin does the
finest coaching job in the country. It's a real tribute to him
that UMaine baseball is as good as it is.

| Yes Maine, and sometimes Michigan are competitive from the north.
I still say the best are from the south, and I bet a LOT of northern
baseball talents go to school in the south because of it.
OSU has been there the most, but I bet either Arizona State or Texas
has WON the CWS the most. ASU has won it about 20 times.

| The BIG-8 tournament usually brings great satisfaction to the OSU
fans. Normally, OSU wins it by playing OU in the finals and often
comes from behind and somehow pulls it out. Of course OU usually
beats OSU in football and often wins it by a great play. On the
down side, this "Bedlam Series" competition sometimes leads to
bench-clearing action.
The BIG-8 tourney has been played in Oklahoma City's minor league
stadium for years which obviously gives the Oklahoma teams an
advantage but on the other hand, it makes for a more financially
successful tourney. The other BIG-8 teams don't have the following
that OU and OSU have (especially OSU) and wouldn't draw the crowds
if it was held in other states.

| A lot of northern teams go down to play southern teams because they
have no other choice. All northern schools I know of take a trip
during spring break because it's not possible to get outside earlier.
I'll also bet a lot of schools from down south end up playing in
Austin because Texas can probably give them a little money to come
play, but demands money to go on the road.
The southern schools can spread their 60 games out from January
or February through mid-May when the tournaments start. The northern
schools can't. They'll play some games during spring break. If
they have an early spring break, then they come home and sit while
waiting for the weather to change. Then they'll play something
like 40 games in 6 weeks. The northern college baseball season
is basically late March through early May.
A lot of northern kids do try to go down south to play baseball.
Most of them don't make it. Most southern kids coming out of high
school are further ahead of the typical northern kid, but a lot
of the southern coaches do try to lure northern kids down in the
hope that maybe one of them will pan out. If they're walkons, it's
really no cost to the southern coach. They'll go down, play fall
baseball and unless the northern kid can impress right away, he's
history. A lot of schools up here get kids who come back after
losing the gamble of going down south and getting on scholarship.
It's also been said by some major league scouts that if a northern
kid and a southern kid are equal, draft the northern kid. The reason
is that because the southern kid has had so much more opportunity
to play ball that there's less room for improvement than with the
northern kid. Most southern kids are further ahead though, like
I've said before.

John, there's a division 1 coach that's going to get a lot of press in
the coming years --> Dick Rockwell, LeMoyne College. They played Div 2
until last year. They were in the Div 2 WS a few times in the late
70s and early 80s, and were anually one of the best college teams in the
Northeast (regardless of division). MLers that graduated from LeMoyne
include Tom Browning and Tim Deshaies.
Last year was their 1st year in Div 1, and they were one single away
from the Div 1 WS. They lost to Arkansas (I think) in the East final
by one run (the winning runs were on base), after beating the Razorbacks
in the opening round of the tourney.
They are faced with the same weather problems as Maine (being in Syracuse,
NY), and also get their 1st spring action on road trips through the south.
They get mostly NYS kids, and somehow Rockwell works wonders.

That's why the OU/OSU matchups, in any sport, are called the
"Bedlam Series". These schools aren't usually known for starting
the physicial stuff but when they get together it gets crazy.
The fans probably could be blamed for some of it, too, since
they really get fired up, tho' I don't recall any fans ever starting
anything themselves.
Actually, I kind of like it as long as nobody gets seriously hurt.

Last year OSU didn't get out of the regionals, so it must have been
the year before that was Robin Ventura's last year and the year that
OSU choked in the championship game. (OSU usually depends on power
hitting to get to the WS--not great pitching--and couldn't hit the
ball in their loss).
Oh yeah, your question....caint remember how many WS appearances but
*can* remember the announcer making the comment that OSU had the most
appearances but no championship--thus the biggest WS loser status.
(Not that the Cowboys will never win it).

Thanks for posting that! Do you have the # of actual CWS
Championships? I like this simplified list better
(need at least 10 to qualify). Notice how all but one are
below the Mason-Dixon line, and 2 states have 2 schools that make up
the all-time top 8!

all the northern talents go south if they're serious about baseball.

I wouldn't say that ALL of the talented players go to southern
schools if they are serious about baseball. Only about 99% of
them. The rest go to U. Maine or other schools. The first pick
in the '78 draft was Billy Almon out of Brown U, Darling went to
Yale, Jeff Musselman went to Hahvuhd, the Giants first rounder
a couple of years ago, Mike Remlinger went to Dartmouth, Pete
Broberg was a Dartmouth grad. Mo Vaugh and Kevin Morton, both
promising yound Red Sox prospects, went to Seton Hall. A couple
guys (out of the ten pitchers recruited) who were on Brown's pitching
staff a few years back got drafted.... Anyhow, some of the northern
schools have a decent pull because if the kids want to hedge against
injuries or not making it they can go to a prestige institution and
be sure to at least get a 'good' education out of the deal.

in baseball consists of all the teams in basketball except for
Syracuse. Because of the weather in Syracuse, they dropped baseball
in Orange Country in the mid-seventies. The Big East until this

| American South Conference tournament starts today at Moore Field
in Lafayette, Louisiana. Top seed New Orleans meets the #4 seed
Arkansas State, then #2 seed and host Southwestern Louisiana will
play the #3 seed Louisiana Tech. UNO and USL tied for the regular
season title, but UNO won 2 of the 3 head-to-head games.
So far, the following teams have won conference titles:
East Coast Lafayette Leopards
Eastern Intercollegiate Pennsylvania Quakers
Pacific Ten South Stanford Cardinal
Southern Citadel Bulldogs
Southland Texas-Arlington Mavericks
Southwestern Athletic Jackson State Tigers
Trans American Stetson Hatters
For some reason, the SWAC does not have an automatic berth in
the NCAAs this year, although they have had one the last seven
years. I believe the other 6 teams above have automatically
qualified for the NCAA tournament. Texas-Arlington will be making
its first appearance in the Division I national tournament,
after finishing 2nd or 3rd in its conference the last 7 years.
Any results on the ECAC Division I tournament yesterday ?

| Yesterday's ASC Tournament results :
New Orleans 9, Arkansas State 2
Southwestern Louisiana 11, Louisiana Tech 2
The ACC tournament starts tomorrow morning at Municipal Stadium
in Greenville, South Carolina.
#1 North Carolina vs #8 Maryland
#2 Clemson vs #7 Duke
#3 North Carolina State vs #6 Virginia
#4 Wake Forest vs #5 Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech was, at one point, #1 in the country with a 23-1
record, but have compiled only a 20-19 record since then, and last
week fell out of the national rankings. Two-and-a-half weeks ago
they were 6-3 in the ACC, hosting the top-seeded Tar Heels, who
had a 13-2 conference mark. They won the first two games of the
series, and had a 10-5 lead through 8 innings of the series finale,
but ending up losing the game. They closed the ACC by losing 6 of 7
conference games, including being swept by Wake Forest last weekend.
They may have the most overall talent, and deepest pitching staff,
in the conference, but they just haven't played up to pre-season
expectations in the second half of the year.
On the other hand, UNC has turned last year's College World Series
appearance into a springboard for this year. They have a great
reliever in Brad Woodall, whose loss to Tech in game 2 of that series
was his first collegiate loss in three years of pitching. They have
played very consistently all year long, including sweeps of Clemson
and N.C.State (the #2 and #3 seeds in the tournament), and have to
be considered a slight favorite over the "home" team from Clemson in
this year's ACC tournament, which will conclude either next Tuesday
or Wednesday.

I don't agree. While Maine has had a lot of trouble winning games
in Coral Gables, they have a winning record against Miami in Orono.
Just a couple years ago, Maine won 3 of 4 games against a Miami club
ranked in the top five at the time, and the year before swept both
games in Orono (one game was rained out). I think Maine could easily gain
a split. Miami just hasn't been the same team on the road as they
have at home, and they traditionally play 45-50 games a year at home, so
they don't often have to face up to the "disadvantages" of a grass field,
no big crown rooting for you (Miami, Texas, and Mississippi State are
the biggest drawing schools year-in, year-out), etc.

| Re Note 195.91
I Dont agree at all. A couple of years ago is just that a couple of
years ago , old history at best. A team as good as miami doesnt need
big crowds routing for them and will not be a factor in the final
outcome of the encounter. Without question it will be very difficult
for maine to gain a split. I see them winning one game at most, and
maybe none.

win the SEC regular season title. The SEC tournament wiil be
played this coming weekend in Birmingham.
#1 Louisiana State vs #6 Florida
#2 Georgia vs #5 Vanderbilt
#3 Mississippi State vs #4 Auburn
USL needed 1 win in 2 games against UNO on Saturday to win the
American South conference tournament, but I have yet to see the
scores of those games.
UNC remains unbeaten in the ACC tournament in Greenville, S.C.,
after beating up on Georgia Tech yesterday, 9-4. The critical
game of the tournament (other than the championship game) may
be today's Tech-N.C.State game, as both teams are "on the bubble"

| Well, we're fast approaching the CWS. Every year about this
time I remember the year our Legion A team got to attend this
event. It was in 1978 and USC and ASU were in the finals. ASU
had Bob Horner, Hubie Brooks, and Chris Bando. I can't recall
any of the other players making it to the bigs. I believe
Horner went up right after the finals that year to the Braves.
Even with all their stars, ASU got whooped pretty bad (if I
remember correctly ;^) ) by USC. We got to sit right by
the ASU cheerleaders! Bad move to put a bunch of 17 year old
boys next to them.
Wasn't there some sort of movement to have the site of the CWS
changed? I hope it failed. The stadium is fairly old but real
cozy and comfortable. It's just one of those places that has
a lot of charisma. Go to the CWS if you get a chance. I can't
comment on the night life in Omaha cuz we were only 17, but we
had a great time watching the games.

| Texas wins the SWC tournament by holding off the Cougars. The
Longhorns got off to an early lead but then let Houston back into the
game with walks and errors. Dressendorfer then shut the door with 2
impressive innings. He appeared twice in the tournament as a reliever
and looked good and felt good both times. They are still going to play
it by ear for the college WS, however and just may keep him as a
reliever in order to limit his innings pitched. For those who don't
know, Dressendorfer missed the end of the regular season with an injury
to his pitching shoulder. No surgery was required and he seems to be
recovering nicely.
The Razorbacks, after winning the SWC in the regular season and being
named 3rd in some college polls took a pounding from both Houston and
Texas in the tournament.

| > For all of us Maine doubters, they did take 3 out of 4 from Miami
> the weekend before last.
As it turns out, they probably had to in order to make the tournament.
A poor performance against Miami, followed up by the disaster in the
ECAC finals against Fordham would possibly have knocked them out of the
NCAAs. However, winning 3-out-of-4 against then #2 ranked Miami probably
got them in.
First time Division I tournament teams:
Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (41-23), at large from Metro conference
Texas-Arlington Mavericks (31-28), champions of Southland conference
Campbell Camels (15-31), champions of Big South conference

A&M finished the season with a 43-15 record. Normally 43 wins is
enough to get you in the tourney. Apparently not this year. This is
also the first time that A&M hasn't made the tourney since 1985.
Cadzilla, I thought the UT/UA score was 11-1. Houston hammered the

| According to the Colegiate baseball Top 25, the West II Regional is
by far the toughest draw, with five teams in the Top 25 (Arizona State
#2; Oklahoma State #9; Loyola Marymount #14; Washington State #19; UC
Santa Barbara #23), and all five have at least 40 wins.
Miami has by far the easiest draw in the Atlantic regional, as they
are the only Top 25 team in that regional. Stanford in the West 1
Regional also has a fairly tough draw (after 15-31 Campbell). Three
other Top 25 teams are in their region. The only other region with
four Top 25 teams is the Northeast, with North Carolina (#12), Georgia
(#15), Iowa (#17), and Maine (#22).

Eastern Connecticut State University picked up both the Womens Softball
title, and the Men's Division III title.
Needless to say, the town of Willimantic, where the college is located,
has been going nuts the past two weeks. It's normally a quiet little
town, about 15 minutes east of where I live, but now, people are
really up.
I guess another sign is going to be going up on I-84...
I also wanted to comment about UCONN's showing in the tournament. While
they did not do very well, and there is no such thing as a_excellent
loss, I liked the coach's attitude after their elimination.
He said that no one on the squad had been to that level before, so they
didn't have any experience with it. He also said that now that they've
been, he'll be looking to his returning players to pass that experience
on to the incoming freshmen. It will give them all incentive to try
and return, doing better the next time.
Without a doubt, the folks in Connecticut are quite proud of all the
Husky efforts this year....

This "rivalry" also includes football. A few years back an unranked
OSU team went to ASU for a season opener. ASU was ranked near the
top in preseason polls but got badly. Seems like 42-10 or something.
That may have been Thurman Thomas' senior year.
Your right about these two schools having the makings of a good
rivalry. They both have similar strengths in the same sports and
have been running in to each other alot lately.

| Johnny Keane was Yankees manager in 1965 and part of 1966, way before
the Yankee Stadium renovation, which took place in 1974 and 1975.
Ralph Houk stepped down after George's first year in charge, 1973.
Bill Virdon was manager in 1974 and most of 1975, before being fired
and replaced by Billy Martin, who lasted on this tour until 1978.
So Bill Virdon is the answer to the question.

| Yo Jeff,
It is not a true double elimination. The winner of the
loser's bracket only has to beat the winner of the winner's
bracket once. I think Texas lost in the champeenship game
a couple of years ago. It was their only loss of the CWS.
I don't like this setup FWIW........

re Clay
Texas lost last year to W.State. It was UT's only lose. The new
format must have been set-up for the major networks. ESPN broadcast
all of the games except the final. Then CBS and Moosebooger came on
to give us the other side of the game!! What a crock, they took a format
that had worked since 1948 and changed it for the good of the
networks and not the Athletes or the Fans.

| Mississippi State scored 11 in top of first, beat GSC 15-1.
Georgia, trailing 2-0 after 5, scored 11 in top of 6th, beat
top-rated Stanford 16-2.
Georgia Southern was robbed in their opener. Trailing 3-2 in
the top of the sixth, Eagles' catcher Rob Fitzpatrick hit a ball
over the fence for what should have been a two-run homer. However,
the ball hit the scoreboard (which is a home run) and bounced back
into play. The umpires said they "lost the ball" in the white
background of the scoreboard, and called it in play. GSC doesn't
score in the inning, and ends up losing in extra innings. Tough
loss for starter Joey Hamilton (18-4), who won both games on the
last day of the regional tournament against UCLA and South Alabama
(for which he was named regional MVP-he also started the 13-inning,
4-2 victory over Wichita State in the Midwest Regional opener).

| RE: the CWS "modified double elimination" bracket system
Anyone know what the reasoning is behind this system?
If Stanford beats Georgia which means they play each other
again. So, to get to the championship game Georgia would
have to play Stanford 3 TIMES and 1 other team ONCE.
Same goes for Oklahoma State. They could play LSU 3 TIMES
and 1 other team ONCE.
Why is the bracket system set up this way? Why not set it
up where a team never plays the same team twice--unless its
down to the championship game?

* unbeaten in 7 post-season games and batted .369, averaging
nearly 12 runs and more than 14 hits a game and totalling
an 83-24 run margin
* during the CWS OSU won their games 14-0, 17-9, 14-4, 14-3
* CWS Final game: victims of 10 strikeouts and 3 double plays,
only 5 hits and 1 run. Even with only 5 hits in the final
game OSU still set a new CWS batting average of .349
Sour Grapes:
1) Georgia's phantom double play that killed an OSU rally
in the 8th. (It was questionable if Bulldogs 2nd baseman
Alfonso had touched 2nd base for the 1st out; there was no
question Daniel beat the throw to 1st base for the second.)
2) OSU still should be playing. (How could a team with one
loss be eliminated from a so-called double-elimination
tournament?

HA HA. I'm sure that most of you out there think that Oklahoma
is paradise in the summer but it's not the time to go. It was
mid-nineties with humidity probably also in the nineties. The
fact is that after living in Colorado for 2 1/2 years I cain't
handle the heat down there. We drove around alot with the A/C
on--a good 1000 miles after we arrived, just to stay cool--that's
a 1000 miles--NO LIE. Gramma doesn't need A/C in her house for
some reason. She *did* tell a good story about the local drivers
in Ringling, tho'. "I had to do 75 just to git 'round that
slo' poke!!" Better stay outta her way!
