| Welcome to the non-playoff '90 note for the fab 'fins.
I hope there will be of plenty of traffic on this note in '90 as
there are signs of the 'fins coming out of the doldrums at last.
Anyone have any theories as to how the Dolphins will utilise their
draft picks?
Would be interested to hear of any fans' personal choices as well.
I beleive that we still need a high calibre RB. Perhaps a big FB
would help Smith out and help to balance our mediocre running game.
Wouldn't hurt to acquire a decent CB. Secondary is not too good
at the moment.
Would like to see a good QB taken this year to phase Marino out
around '92 or '93. His lack of mobility restricts the plays that
the offensive line makes - ie. you can either protect a non-mobile
QB (which they do superbly) or have a line make holes for the RB.
It would be excellent if we could trade Walsh as I beleive he will
be a better QB than Aikman,
There you go, plenty of topics - get those notes rollin' in!

| He wants out becuase he's having trouble getting along with Shula. I
think it probably goes back to the cutting of Don Strock. Marino gave
the Dolphins a list of teams that he'd like to be traded to, Pittsburgh
obviously being at the top of his list because it's his hometown.
It'll never happen though. Pittsburgh doesn't need him. How much you
wanna bet that if traded, it will be to the Raiders who were second or
third on his list?

Unless Marino has a mother who will show up for every game, jump up and down,

| I was kinda almost gonna make an aaddition to my note saying that it
would be OK for Pittsburgh to go after Marino because he is better than
Brister RIGHT NOW, but for the following reasons I didn't:
- Pittsburgh is rebuilding still; what they would have to
sacrifice for Marino would hurt more than help
- It would not be a good move for Pittsburgh psychologically;
"OK guys, remember that QB that came on so great at the end
of last season, fired us up, and led us into the playoffs?
Well, he's over there on the bench while homeboy here takes
over."
- Noll sticks with one guy these days, often too long: Stoudt,
Woodly, and Malone come to mind.

| Being of sound mind (so my mother tells me) I have always thought Dan
to be the best and, if ever it came around, would be a tragedy for the
fins were he to ask for a move.
It may be a blessing in disguise though
as no offensive line that protects THAT good can also block for the
run. It might be better for the 'O' to have a QB who can be mobile/take
a bit of roughing.

| I don't want to start another rathole, but Marino is overrated.
He has tremendous protection and until recently, two receivers
that caught every underthrown ball into double coverage that he
lobbed up there. He set lots of records, but much of it was the
quality of receivers and offensive line. I'm not saying Marino is
not a very good quarterback, he just doesn't deserve the billing
he gets.

Any QB who has ever been labeled as great had good to great receivers
and a good offensive line. I can't recall any "great" QB who got
continually pummeled and never had time to set up and had recievers who
appeared to have silicone grease on their hands, and still passed for
boo-koo yards and muchos TD's.
I'm not just talking Marino but any "great" QB thru the years.

Tremendous protection? Maybe after the game... the Giants are
pernially among the leaders in most sack allowed. The line came together
in '86, but only at the end of the year. Injuries, Plan B, rookies,
etc., have caused the line to struggle. The young behemoths are starting
to come through, finally.
Quality receivers? Name one all-pro or even Pro-Bowl Wide Receiver
from the Giants in the past 10 years? Bavaro, a tight end, is the only
one to make the grade, and he has had three injury plagued seasons since
then..
> He set lots of records, but much of it was the

What has happened to Simms is he didn't get the recognition he
deserved until the Super Bowl, and now, with his skills eroding he is still
getting carryover from that. He's still the leader of the Giants offense,
and that translates into execution on the field..

The Dolphins effectively sold their draft to Marino's whims. I'm sure
they made Marino a lot happier by taking to offensive linemen with

going in another direction in this deep draft.

is, Ronnie Lee #(62) was left unprotected, and the Atlanta Falcon

Taken off the net...
MIAMI (UPI) -- The Miami Dolphins seemed to be rolling toward the
playoffs last season. Then it rained.
With an encouraging 7-4 record and a 14-0 lead over the Pittsburgh
Steelers at Joe Robbie Stadium, the sky opened and spilled huge puddles
onto the grass.
The Dolphins lost 34-14 and stumbled out of contention, losing four
of their last five games.
``It was like we were on a high, and in the Pittsburgh game we were
beating the heck out of them 14-0. All of a sudden the rain started
pouring and we gave in,'' said veteran linebacker Barry Krauss, who led
the team in tackles last year.
``Our confidence factor went into the hole and we hit a couple
teams that were really playing well.''
The Dolphins finished 8-8 for the second straight year, and look at
another rebuilding season in 1990.
``I'm still upset at what happened last year,'' Miami Coach Don
Shula said. ``All of our thoughts, effort and dedication will be so that
we can win in the fourth quarter, and win at the end of the season, when
it counts.''
For the Dolphins, any rebound will begin with the run -- both
starting it and stopping it.
The Dolphins finished next to last in the NFL in rushing offense
and 25th among the 28 teams in rushing defense. Shula hopes some new
faces will help the offense.
Chief among them are first-round draft choice Richmond Webb and
second-round pick Keith Sims, both big offensive linemen who figure to
give the Dolphins some of the muscle they have lacked in recent years.
Both ended brief holdouts before the first exhibition game.
``The fact that we got our draft choices into camp early is a big
plus,'' Shula said of the early signings.
Another key to the running game will be former Florida State back
Sammie Smith, a first-round pick a year ago who held out until the
second game of the season. Smith gained 659 yards last year, but failed
to break a run longer than 25 yards while catching only seven passes.
``We'd like for him to come on and be the runner we hoped he would
be when we drafted him last year,'' Shula said. ``We saw signs of that
last year. What he's got to do is get the ball a lot and show us what he
can do.''
The Dolphins hope to develop enough of a running game to take some
pressure off quarterback Dan Marino, receivers Mark Clayton and Mark
Duper and the passing game, which ranked third in the NFL last year and
will remain the soul of the Miami offense.
A soul is what the Miami defense is looking for. For the past five
years, it has had none.
Stopping the run has been the No. 1 problem, and few solutions are
in sight.
Defensive end John Bosa is out for the season after blowing his
left knee in training camp. He was supposed to replace T.J. Turner, who
started last year strong against the run, but suffered a leg injury in
an automobile accident at midseason. Now Turner remains the incumbent
with pass rusher Jeff Cross at the other end and Brian Sochia in the
middle -- the same cast as last year.
At outside linebacker, E.J. Junior and Hugh Green are expected to
start again but will be pressured by Eric Kumerow and holdout Rick Graf.
John Offerdahl anchors the middle along with Krauss. If Krauss's aching
knee gives him trouble, Plan B pickups Mike Reichenbach of Philadelphia
and Cliff Odom of Indianapolis can step in.
Young safeties Louis Oliver and Jarvis Williams are back, but both
cornerbacks may be new. Tim McKyer, acquired from San Francisco, will
start at one side if he gets over recurrent groin muscle pulls.
On the other side, returnee Paul Lankford is coming off knee
surgery. J.B. Brown, Rodney Thomas and Michael McGruder are challenging
him.
Despite the problems the Dolphin camp has been laced with optimism
this year.
``I felt last year that we should have been in the playoffs,''
Marino said. ``We have a lot of young players and if those guys can play
well, with the other guys we have we'll be a better football team.''
``I think in the AFC, any team can win and get to the Super Bowl
because there are no dominant teams.''

News from Dolphins camp:
CRASH Jenson and Troy Stradford have ended their holdouts and have
signed new contracts. Stradford's playing status is questionable because
of his knee injury... Rick Graf is now the only Dolphin not signed...
The Dolphins are now 15 wins away from increasing their record
to 2 perfect seasons... Should be no problem accomplishing the feat as
long as Mr. Marino remembers which team to throw the ball to. (He gave
up 3 interceptions vs. the Pats).
Sammie Smith is leading the league in rushing with 159 yards. :^)
Unfortunately, the game was blacked out in the Boston area this
past weekend, but from the highlights that I saw and the description
from the radio (Charley Steiner of ESPN did the announcing), they sounded
pretty damn good.
Game summary to follow... Sorry to take so long...
FOXBORO, Mass. (UPI) -- Dan Marino threw a 7-yard scoring pass t o
Tony Paige with 1:46 left in the fourth quarter Sunday afternoon,
rallying the Miami Dolphins to a 27-24 triumph over New England that
snapped the Patriots' six-game winning streak on Opening Day.
Miami, opening its Silver Anniversary season in the NFL, had lost
its last five season-openers.
Jason Staurovsky's 57-yard field goal fell short with 21 seconds
left.
Steve Grogan hit Irving Fryar with a 22-yard pass midway through
the first quarter and connected on a 35-yard pass to Marv Cook late in
the second as the Patriots built a 21-6 first-half edge.
Marino, 3-5 in his career in Foxboro Stadium, was intercepted three
times on the afternoon before the game-winning drive. He completed 22 of
34 attempts for 255 yards and two TDs.
Marino went 3 for 3 on the decisive drive, which carried 48 yards
and six plays. Marino scrambled right before finding Paige open in the
end zone on the winner.
Sammie Smith, who ran for 105 of his career-best 159 yards in the
first half, scored for the Dolphins early in the third to cut the score
to 21-20. Smith carried the ball 23 times, 15 in the opening half.
Leading 14-6, New England converted on Miami's second costly
turnover of the first half.
Johnny Rembert picked off Marino's floating pass in the right flat.
Three plays later, Grogan hit Cook over the middle for a 35-yard score,
moving the Patriots ahead 21-6 with 1:13 left in the half.
Grogan went 17 for 28 for 217 yards.
Miami had sliced the score to 7-6 on Pete Stoyanovich's 37-yard
field goal in the opening minute of the second quarter.
New England's John Stephens capped a 6-play, 52-yard drive with a
1-yard dive nearly 10 minutes later.
Marino moved the Dolphins 65 yards in 4 plays in only 50 seconds,
hitting Tony Martin on a 35-yard pass to cut the deficit to 21-13 with
23 seconds left in the first half.
The Dolphins scored on their opening drive of the second half,
marching 71 yards in 8 plays. Smith capped the drive with a 3-yard
plunge, narrowing the deficit to 21-20.
The Patriots struck right back with Staurovsky kicking a 42-yard
field goal, making the score 24-20.
Trailing 3-0, the Patriots halted a drive when Ronnie Lippett
intercepted Marino at New England's 5 and returned it to Miami's 22.
The Patriots scored one play later when Grogan connected on a 22-
yard strike with Fryar for a 7-3 lead.
Miami jumped ahead 3-0 on Stoyanovich's 31-yard field goal 4:16
into the contest.

| Unless the Dolphins had finished last in the AFC East in 1986 (which I
don't think they did), it would have been 1987. Since the advent of
the 16-team alignment, the AFC East has played the NFC East in 1978,
1981, 1984, 1987 and now 1990. The only time the Giants hadn't
finished last the previous year was 1986. They also didn't finish in
last place last year.
I'll look it up when I get home.

been scheduled to play in 1987 during the strike weekend. I saw the
all time record between the Dolphins and Giants as being 1-0 Miami. If
that's the case, then it is likely they played in 1972 only. In any
event, I'll check it out tonight.

night. Good to see a couple of rushing scores. Excellent trick play to
Jensen also. Marino threw a vintage score to yookenhoo.
Hope we can keep our divisional record going. Last weeks game has me
worried though. It highlights the difference between a SUPPOSED good
AFC team (Buff) & a good NFC (NYG). I would be more than happy to see
out the season winning most of our internal games & learning from this
season to make the 'fins become NFL beaters - remember - this is

Can anyone supply me with a list of all

| I'm looking at the Dolphins' 1990 schedule.
They've beaten New England twice (by at total of 10 pts); stomped the
Jeckyll-and-Hyde Bills; thumped Pittsburgh (before they found their "O")
and just squeaked by the Jets. They got smoked by the Giants. In
their remaining games, they'll play only 3 teams currently with winning
records (Raiders, Skins and Bills). They have a decent shot at winning
11 (even 12) games and their division but may be the first team out of
the playoffs.
Admittedly, they are a team on the rebound. With Don Shula, Dan
Marino, Sammie Smith, a much-improved offensive line and a rejuvenated
defense, they oughta be a force in the (yawn) AFC within the next coupla
years. Still, when I think about 5-and-1-type teams, the Dolphins don't
exactly leap to mind. IMO, and all that.

Since they played New England twice, and Indy, Phoenix, the Jets,
and Pittsburgh (before they found themselves). The only tough teams
they've played against are the Giants (which gave them their only
loss) and the Bills (which they smoked). In all fairness though,
the Cards have a good running attack (which the Dolphins stopped)

That is true, the individuals you mention were playing through most
their undefeated streak on MNF (which was broken by who else ? the
Bills!). BUT they still continued to be impressive after these guys
faded (no pun intended) away. IMHO, if a team has a 'reputation' to
live up to, they will be a little more psyched for a game than normal.
It is true that you can come up with a statistic that would say that
the Patriots(aka Red Sox with helmets) beat teams coached by a Libra
whenever Dow Jones Ind. Avg is a multiple of 7. But there is no
'reputation' involved. But the Raiders MNF record is something worth
defending.

Al: As you know, Dan, the Raiders are 'reputed' to be one of

Dan: BETTER MNF teams! I'd say that the Raiders are without a
doubt one of the *BEST* MNF teams in the history of MNF.
Why, since I've been on the Slimfast program blah blah blah...
<insert sound and footage of Tanzanian Tree Sloth farting here>
The Raiders have won more games on Monday nights than
any other NFL team. Big Deal. I'm sure that the Browns
have won more Sunday afternoon games than the 49ers. Do
you think that I'd bet that the Browns would beat the 49ers

keeps a gleam in them thar eyes. The Raiders will wake up real quick
and realize this will effect the MNF record. Add an "L" to that record.
I think the Dolphins are too strong an offense for the Raiders D and
Maimi's D will do just fine in stopping them. Raiders will be lucky to
score more than 17pts and thats being generous.
What is Maimi's MNF record?? I'm sure its not too bad.

One last note. (should have been mentioned before) The fish are
playing over their heads.

Frank,
FWIW, of the division leading teams, the Bills have the toughest schedule
for the remaining games. Shown below is a list of teams with the combined
record of their remaining opponents. If you want to talk girly-mon,
howzbout those niners and giants. Gee, they aren't even playing teams
with a combined winning record.
Combined
record of
remaining
Team oppponents
--------------------
Bills .556
Cinci .540
Miami .524
Raiders .492
NYG .492
49'ers .438
Bears .406

| Paul,
Those dastisticks are impressive. However, you forgot a couple
of things....
1) Buffalo plays in the AFC, predominantly against AFC opponents
2) Buffalo plays in the AFC, predominantly against AFC opponents
3) Buffalo plays in the AFC, predominantly against AFC opponents
Hope this helps 8^)

| On a more serious note:
The Bills do play the Patriots and Colts twice. They play the Jets
twice and while they're improved, they aren't all that great. From the
AFC Central, they play the Browns and Oilers. They also play the
Broncos and Raiders. They also play the Giants, Redskins, Eagles and
Cardinals. Of their foes, they play 9 games against mediocre teams - 2
New England, 2 Colts, 2 Jets, Browns, Broncos and Cardinals. The
Dolphins play a slightly tougher schedule than the Bills.

| Frank,
In the AFC East, the Bils opponents have a combined record of 16-21 (.432)
In the NFC East, the Giants opponents have a combined record of 15-22 (.405)
In the AFC, there are 7 teams with at least a .500 record.
In the NFC, there are 5 teams with at least a .500 record.
Yeah, I'll agree that the 49'ers and Giants are good ball clubs, but the
other 11 teams (including the Bears) are not any better as a group than
the bottom eleven of the AFC. (Although the Red Sox with helmets might tip
the scales)
So in summary---"Oh YEAH!!"

They play essentially same schedule. It could have been stated more
clearly that the only difference in their schedules is that Buffalo plays
Houston and Denver while Miami plays Pittsburgh and Seattle. Where
Pittsburgh and Seattle are more formidable opponents than the Oilers and
Donks.
My original point was that Buffalo has the toughest schedule for the
remainder of the season.

| OK, here is Buffalo and Miamis' past oppenants records.
Buffalo .398 hahahahaha
Miami .445
Buffalo has faced two teams with winning records, they lost to Miami
and if not for a stupid couple of minutes they would have lost to
the Raiders. Oh yes, they look like a powerhouse to me 8^)
Miami has faced three teams with winning records, they beat Buffalo
and Pittsburgh, but lost to the undefeated Giants.
You make the call 8^)

Yep, I admit it (I honestly do). The fish have played a tougher schedule.
But I still hate 'em. Again, my original point is that Buffalo has the
toughest schedule for the remainder of the season. When all the dust
is settled, Buffalo will be on top. (the fish might even have the same
record, but the Bills will win the tie-breaker, AFC play).
You GOTS to understand my feelings here folks (pretend you are a
psychiatrist now). I grew up in Buffalo not knowing what it was like
to beat the Dolphins. Here we would go out and play'em twice a year and
can't beat them for something like 14-15 years. Granted, that the
Dolphins were a dynasty in the 70's and the Bills were mighty poor.
But still!!! One stinkin' win for a little kid from Buffalo. Naw!!
So now that the Bills are a respectable team. They CAN and DO beat the
dolphins. When they do I wet my pants. When they lose, I revert to
sucking my thumb. Either case, child-like. Hmmm. Serious disorder
here. I wonder if I can sue Schula. Good thing I had the Sabres in
the 70's or I woulda run away from home and moved to Rochester. At
least they didn't have any teams to bemoan.

You almost had it right M.J......Hee hee. The Raiders totally dominated
the Dolphins, although the margin of victory was only 3 pts. Sammie
Smith didn't have a clue carrying the six times for minus 3yds,
and receiving once for minus 1yd. Matter of fact Miami set a record
for rushing futlity with just 14yds in 12 carries. On the other
hand Bo Jackson rushed for 99yds on 17 carries and Marcus Allen
gained 79-yds and 1 TD with 19 carries. The Raiders stopped Miami
in 9 of 10 third down situations.

Excuse me? Were we watching the same game? Both teams played bad
ball. If anything, you can chalk that Raider win up to Miami's clock
mismanagement in the 4th quarter.
