LILLEHAMMER, Norway (AP) -- U.S. skiers struck gold on Tuesday
for the second time in three days when dark horse Diann
Roffe-Steinrotter won the women's super-G race.
It was a sensational way for the Americans to get back on their
feet and onto the medals podium after a slip and a slide that iced
two of their biggest Winter Games stars, Dan Jansen and Duncan
Kennedy, the day before.
Donna Weinbrecht, too, took a step toward another gold medal in
the women's freestyle skiing by advancing as expected from
Tuesday's moguls portion to Wednesday's finals.
Roffe-Steinrotter, at 26 the ``old-timer'' of the U.S. ski team,
took the silver in the giant slalom at Albertville in 1992.
But like Tommy Moe, who got the U.S. skiers off to a blazing
start with his victory in the men's downhill on Sunday,
Roffe-Steinrotter was not a favorite in the super-G -- a cross
between downhill and giant slalom.
``It's like a dream,'' said Roffe-Steinrotter, who had never
finished higher than fourth in a super-G race. ``But it's one day,
one race -- if you ski well, anything can happen.''
First to leave the starting gate on a sparkling day at
Kvitfjell, an hour's drive north of Lillehammer, the Potsdam, N.Y.,
resident finished in 1 minute, 22.15 seconds and watched for more
than an hour as her time held up.
The last American woman to win a gold medal in Alpine skiing was
Debbie Armstrong in the giant slalom at Sarajevo in 1984, when Bill
Johnson won the men's downhill.
Svetlana Gladischeva of Russia was second Tuesday in 1:22.44,
winning the first Alpine skiing medal ever for a Soviet, Unified
Team or Russian skier. Isolde Kostner of Italy took the bronze in
1:22.45.
Russia got its second gold medal in 24 hours Tuesday when Lyubov
Egorova, the queen of the 1992 Winter Olympics with three golds and
two silvers, captured the 5-kilometer cross-country race by a
whopping 20 seconds over Manuela Di Centa of Italy. The bronze went
to a real old-timer -- 38-year-old Marja-Liisa Kirvesniemi of
Finland, the triple gold medalist from 1984 who is competing in her
record-tying sixth Olympics.
The Russians vaulted into the medals race lead with six overall,
two of them gold, going into tonight's pairs finals where they were
certain to win two or three more. Norway has five medals, Italy
four, the United States and Finland two each.
Coupled with Tommy Moe's stunning triumph in the men's downhill,
Roffe-Steinrotter's gold makes it two victories in two Olympic
Alpine races at Lillehammer for the supposedly troubled U.S. ski
team.
Moe put himself in position Monday for a second medal, placing
third in the downhill portion of the men's combined. The combined
slalom is staged next week.
The surprising skiers have saved the Americans from what could
have been a disastrous start at Lillehammer.
Dan Jansen, supposedly a lock in the 500 meters, caught an edge
and finished eighth Monday, while the gold went to Russia's
Aleksandr Golubev.
The U.S. lugers had high hopes for their first-ever medal, but
they'll have to wait until 1998. Duncan Kennedy, with a good chance
for the bronze, crashed Monday. Defending world champion Wendel
Suckow finished fifth. And top women's luger Cammy Myler was a
disappointing 11th after Tuesday's first two runs, a distant 0.85
seconds off the medals pace.
Going into Tuesday night's game with Slovakia, the American
hockey team remained hopeful for a medal despite its unimpressive
opening-game tie against France. The field remains wide open --
top-seeded Russia demonstrated that by taking a 5-0 shellacking
from Finland Monday night.
Tuesday started out as a repeat of Monday's misery when two
Americans, one competing for Greece, wiped out on the hard ice of
the luge course.
Erin Warren of Somerville, Mass., had a bad fall when her sled
went out of control and ricocheted off both walls, sending her
plummeting down the course face down, feet first. A few minutes
later Greta Sebald of Minneapolis, a member of Greece's first luge
team, bounced off the walls and took a spill when her sled turned
sideways. Both walked away uninjured.
Jansen, meanwhile, has three more days to overcome the stigma of
being the Bill Buckner of winter in time for the 1000 meters -- his
last chance to salvage a medal from his four Olympics.
``I'll just go out and skate,'' the shaken speedskater said
after inexplicably skidding on a turn in the 500. He has dominated
the event for a decade -- through two celebrated falls in the 1988
Games and two more letdowns in 1992.
``If it happens, it does. If not, I'll go on -- same old thing,''
Jansen said.
Despite his three World Cup victories and two seconds in the
1,000 this season, the race is considered wide open.
Unfair though it might be for the fastest ice sprinter ever,
only a gold could possibly alter Jansen's legacy as an all-time
Olympics flop.
David Wallechinsky, an unofficial Olympics historian, was
hard-pressed Monday to name another top Winter or Summer Games
athlete whose underachievements compare to Jansen's: 10 years, four
Games, zero medals.

That piece on the mogul skier was definetly lame...can't wait for Tonya
to show up. Why does it seem like CBS' anchors are no-names and
has-beens/wanna-be's? It is almost painful to watch some of these
clowns. The best thing that they have going for them is the camera
work.
The weekend coverage had better pick up or I'm off to the video store.
How do you like all the IBM commercials? How many people are watching
the Olympics? A couple million world-wide give or take a half a mil.
Did you see the hole that Duncan Crashady wore in the back of his
spandex suit from the ice on the luge run? Reminds me of the painful
fiberglass burn I got at Attitash on the Alpine slide...of course I
didn't heed the go slow sign but you just have to go for it. Duncan
had a record time running at that point too. Tres bummer! He's still
young though...wait 'til '98.

| So are any hockey teams doing all that well? It appears that there is no real
front runner. Actually with two ties, the U.S. has two points which should keep
them in the hunt.
They seem to be controlling the puck and getting lots of shots on goal but
can't seem to put it in the net. I don't watch much hockey, is that a sign of a
bad team or a good team that needs to work out a few problems?

| Here's a question about the Twin. Was the twin that got cut anywhere near as
good as the one who stayed on the team? The CBS report suggested that they were
very much the same but unless I got the names mixed up, the twin named Peter
seemed to be an important player who'd been drafted by the Rangers. If the
other one was that good, why did he get cut?

| The U.S. is now 2-0 in Alpine events having won the Men's down hill and the
woman's Super G. Also, I believe that the U.S. is running 2nd and 3rd in the
men's Alpine combined after the downhill portion. No Alpine events today.
In the show down of former gold medalists in pairs figure skating, the 1988
Olympics champions Gordyeva and Grinkov from Russia beat the 1992 champions
Mishkutenok and Dmitriyev also from Russia. Gordyeva and Grinkov are in a
league of their own and are probably the best skaters in any of the Olympic
events.
I believe that the big reason that the Russians do so well in pairs and the
U.S. does better in Ladies figure skating is that up to now the best Russian
women skaters have gone in to pairs while the best U.S. women skaters tend
toward Singles. If Yekaterina Gordyeva had been training in singles all of
her life, she would have contended for the last 2 gold metals and she'd be a
lock this time around. The woman never makes a mistake.

Neither. It's not really his event so he let someone else skate so he could
get ready for the 1000. In fact, he had never skated in an Olympic 1500. Turned
out to be a good choice for both him and the team because
dam time shifters,
he won the gold medal in the 1000.

| Comment on Ice Dance result
According to the commentator (former Olympic Ice Dancer Tracy Wilson), the
problem with Torvel and Dean was that they had too many "lifts" in their act.
In an attempt to keep Ice Dancing and Pairs separate events, the people who
regulate those events have put several restrictions on Ice Dancing. They are
limited to 5 lifts per program and they are never allowed to lift the other
skater over their head. I believe that throw jumps are also not allowed.
Wilson seemed to believe that the difference between Torvel and Dean's
technical and artistic marks showed that the judges believed that they had
broken the rules by going beyond 5 lifts.

Wind shear,etc..
All this sport needs is a few more full contact rules and it would
become the most popular sport in the Olympics.. Make the rink a
little elevated with railings all around. Make it just like roller
derby. I had flashbacks of Joanie weston plantin' an elbow into
some BayArea Bombers visage. You'd attract the wrasslin'/roller derby

Per interview w/ the Soupy one after her 1st place performance:
She considers herself a better long program performer and has never
felt more prepared for that segment even better than in November.
About her interviewing skills: She definetly won't have to worry
about getting attacked on her way to any MENSA meetings in the near
future.
Regarding the radio broadcast: It was Paul Wylie doing the
play-by-blade commentary, he obviously knows T & N's programs
inside and out and basically called what they were preparing to
do next on the ice and commented on whether or not they did it well.
Not too bad, for skating anyway.

Tonya delayed her appearance on the ice. The curtains were closed
because she was having an asthma attack. Then she takes 1 last puff of
her inhaler and walks onto the ice. Her first move was supposed to be
a triple lutz (skating to Jurassic Park), but only did a single lutz.
She immediately dropped her hands in disgust and burst into tears. She
approached the judges and said her skates were too tight and they
skipped her and went on to the next skater. Nobody seems to know how
this will be dealt with now.
Supposedly she did this in last year's world championships too.

Tonya's free skate <spoiler alert>
Tonya was supposed to have skated...to Jurassic Park.
As she was being announced she was hacking from her asthma and
had two minutes to take the ice after being announced.
She used all of it...fixing her skate and using inhaler.
Takes the ice, nice round of applause, and heads backwards
for her 1st jump triple lutz
Pops out after a single, starts to cry and stops skating.
She headed towards her coach and they go to work on her skate...
arguing quite a bit w/ each other about what to fix.
Skate comes off
The next thing is the crowd boos and they announce next skater.

My gripe as well., All along they ssay that the short program is worth 1/3 of
the score, how does that get factored in, other than assuring a top position.
Postions 1-3 all could win the gold if they won the long program, so in
effect coming in 3 means a much as 1. So again where is 1/3 implemented.
Since both Oksana and NAncy tied on the Germans card 11.6 , why not have the
short program decide the final outcome and not just one measly artistic score
of 5.9 beat a 5.8 on one card.

There were 4 judges from the west that picked Kerrigan, 4 from the east that
picked Oksana Baiul and the German Judge that split the vote with Kerrigan
winning the technical and Baiul winning the presentation. Since presentation
is the tie breaker for the long program Baiul won the long program.
She won the overall event for the reasons I've spelled out a number of times
in the other note.
> If anything, Baiul was the defending champ, right? In boxing, you have

This isn't boxing. The vote was so close none of the judges could possibly
have picked the number they did with any confidence of there being any given
outcome. If any of them had gone a couple tenths the other way the vote would
have changed.

There is no big dispute. Some people, including Kerrigan, are grumbling that
because Bauil two footed a couple triples, Kerrigan should have won. Others
say that Bauil was the right choice because her foot work put her back into
it technically and her presentation was better.
Most of the people complaining the loudest are sports writers from the west,
particularly the Boston area, who don't know a whole lot about the sport. For
that matter, some of them don't know a whole lot about any sport, they just
like to complain.
Bottom line is that Bauil won and the conventional wisdom from the skating
crowd is that it was an acceptable call. On to Nagono.

Going back about 3 olympics, there used to be 3 parts of the competition,

I think George spelled it out in the other '94 Olympics note.
Not sure if I remember the note # or his explanation. It seems
to me as if the judges treat the short program as a seeding
event. "OK, let's see how they skate, get the top performers( by
reputation it seems), rank them, get rid of the wannabees (4.9's
etc), and concentrate on the long program. The one who does the

Sure, in today's world of upside-down morality, it's always better to
be openly boorish and insensitive maybe even to the point of criminality
than to generally show good manners and be well-behaved and know when
to keep your mouth shut. Because if you're the latter and you slip up
and show your feelings once in a while, then you're a phony. It's
beyond me how people pretend to know anything about what a person is
really like based on television clips, by almost always assuming the
worst, until proven otherwise...

I disagree with 2 things here. First, it's not at all clear that she has
to swallow the sour grapes. WBZ reported that the Disney deal she signed was
worth $2 million. Also the Globe is reporting that she won't be going to
the World Championship which means she's probably going to go pro so this
won't be an issue again. The rest of her career will be carefully orchestrated.
I also disagree with the claim that she talked about doing it for her
country. When did she say that? If she has been consistent about one thing over
the last 3 years it is that she skates for herself and no one else. It's kind
of egotistical but I give her credit for being honest.

In each program, each judge gives a score for technical and presentation.
The scores of each judge are added together to give one score and that score
is compared to the scores of the other skaters giving a relative ranking called
an "ordinal". If you get the highest scores from a judge, your ordinal is 1. If
you get the 2nd highest your ordinal is 2 and so forth.
If 5 judges rank you ahead of another skater than your overall ordinal is
lower (hence better) than theirs. So at the end of each competition the
skaters are ordered by their ordinal score.
After the short program the ordinals are divided by 2. So the ordinal
scores after the short program were.
Place Skater Ordinal Score (place/2)
----- ------ -----------------------
1 Nancy Kerrigan USA 0.5
2 Oksana Baiul Ukrainian 1.0
3 Surya Bonaly France 1.5
4 Chen Lu China 2.0
...
10 Tonya Harding USA 5.0
In the long program they finished something like:
Place Skater Ordinal Score (place)
----- ------ ---------------------
1 Oksana Baiul Ukrainian 1.0
2 Nancy Kerrigan USA 2.0
3 Chen Lu China 3.0
4 Surya Bonaly France 4.0
...
7 Tonya Harding USA 7.0
Adding those scores together you get:
1 Oksana Baiul Ukrainian 1.0 + 1.0 = 2.0
2 Nancy Kerrigan USA 0.5 + 2.0 = 2.5
3 Chen Lu China 2.0 + 3.0 = 5.0
4 Surya Bonaly France 1.5 + 4.0 = 5.5
...
8 Tonya Harding USA 5.0 + 7.0 = 12.0
Baiul wins the Gold. Notice that Chen Lu just edged Surya Bonaly for the
Bronze. That was a close call as well and would have been even more of a
controversy had it been for the gold since Chen Lu is all style and Surya
Bonaly is all athlete.
Also notice how Tonya "lost the gold medal in the short program". Even
if she had won the long program her 5.0 ordinal in the short program would
have taken her out of the race for the gold medal. Oksana Baiul finished
2nd in the short program and her 1.0 ordinal kept her well within the hunt.

In addition to Campbell's, Disney, and Reebok, Nancy has also inked
a deal with Revlon to endorse their products. Terms were not announced
but my guess it's for a pile of money.

Note that if 5 judges rate you as #1 and 4 judges rate you as #7 (for example)
your ordinal is #1 for that program. This isn't any sort of averaging that
were are talking about. Of course, this is unlikely to happen, but having
5 #1's, 2 #2, and 2 #3's would beat someone with 4 #1's and 5 #2's, even
though the second person's overall average would be better. And that has
happened.

Not only has it happened, it's exactly what happened in the long
skating program! Bauil had two third-place ordinals. It seems to be
kind of a quirk in the scoring system that doesn't feel quite right,
but I suspect that it's there to prevent one poor or biased judge from
really killing a particular competitor...

I've heard the claim made that Yamaguchi gets less offers because of
discrimination against Japanese Americans.
This is just a rumor so take it for what it's worth. She has landed
contracts for contact lenses and Wendy's hamburgers.

re .220
I've said that all along. Few, if any, people outside of Mass. knew
or cared about Nancy before this incident. She's not over bright and
if she had to get by on charisma she'd be eating out of dumpsters. I've
seen table lamps with more presence. But she had her face plastered on
every newspaper, magazine and newscast. You just can't buy that kind of
publicity and now she's filthy stinking rich because of it.

| Amazingly enough after Bayul skated, Kerrigan still had a chance for the gold.
If one of the judges who ranked Bayul 1, gave Chen a highers score (Chen skated
after Bayul), then Bayul and Kerrigan would each have 4 #1's, Kerrigan would
have 4 2's and 1 3; Bayul 3 2's and 2 3's and that would have given Kerrigan
the gold.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. Look at the
endorsements handed out for minority and non-minority MVP's in the 4
major sports. Admittedly, the NBA has improved in this area over the
last 10 years.

Actually, Chen skated first in the final 6 pairing. It would have required
that Bonaly, Witt, or Swezczenko(sp) to have taken one of Bayul's 1st place
marks to have given the Gold to Kerrigan.

| In reading all of the notes discussing Nancy's personality, you should
remember that Nancy did not ask to be in the spotlight, it was thrust
upon her by the attack on her, hence the intense media coverage. Nancy
is a shy, private person, but one who is also very personable and
giving. She, along with her family worked very hard and sacrificied a
lot of time and money so that she could be where she is today. The
portrayals of Nancy since the Olympics have not shown the full
conversations around the few sentences that the media has decided to
show the public. Believe it or not, Nancy is not perfect. Think of
what the world would be like if we were all perfect. None of us would
have anything or anyone to talk about.......

In fact, a Disney spokeperson commented on the two or three Kerrigan
soundbites flying around on Tabloid TV by stating that she wasn't
perfect and Disney didn't hire perfect people. How many noters in here
would have handled being in the fishbowl as well as she has. She
performed brillantly at the Olympics while under intense pressure and
scrutiny by the press. I agree with the last reply, she didn't ask for
any of this media attention; she did goal herself to skate well and get
a gold medal at the Olympics.
Just my 2 cents,

Yes, they both finished about where people expected them to finish based
on how they've been doing all year.
By the way, Tonya did not do poorly. A top 10 finish at the world level is
considered to be very good.
