6616.0. "MTV video: Treat with respect..." by BSS::PROCTOR_R (PC....Politically Corrupt) Wed May 28 1997 19:41

I realize this is probably worth sticking in .last of another note, but
this seemed such an unusual thing that I thought it worthy of a note of
    it's own..

Last night I was cable cruising from C-SPAN to PBS for the MacNeal/Lehrer
report (yah, right)... and made a brief stop at MTV when I spied some
long-haired heavymetal rap druggie leather-coated geek talking about
    guns.

I thought OK, this oughta be good: "Like... dude.... aim low
when you wanna blow away the gang members... aim high if you just wanna
scare the p*ss out of 'em when they invade your turf..."

    Boy, was I wrong!

It turns out that the dude was talking about gun safety, proper
management of firearms, self protection, and the like. He demonstrated
proper handling, firing, and respect for and of firearms, and closed
out by talking about the fact that *he* will always treat firearms with
respect, *but* he would use one for self protection of himself or a
loved one, and that the loss of RKBA would be a loss to all of us.

The kid did a 10-star job, and based on the last 5 or so minutes of the
segment (the show is called "Unfiltered News" on MTV) this kid can show
up at my house to talk about .22 versus .223 anytime he would care to!

The final kicker came when some teenage-female type came on to
close the segment and talked about concealed carry, and mentioned
    (without parental permission no doubt):
"...Crime HAS dropped in the xxx
(I forgot the number because I was so dumbfounded by what I was hearing)
    states that permit concealed carry...."
I was astounded! Fair, unadulterated news coverage of firearms with a
    favorable slant!

The smell of crayons filled the room as I quickly penned a missive to
MTV thanking them for their unbiased approach to the news, and God
    Bless 'em for that!

I humbly forgive MTV for every stupid video they ever played...

Maybe things aren't as far gone as we think?

Oh contrare... Slick Willy did a fine job of pandering to the MTV crowd
during his first campaign and to a lesser degree in 96. The kids were urged
to vote and Klinton's opposition ignored them entirely... Enough voted to get
him elected...

Ever hear of MTV's "ROCK THE VOTE"? It was a national voter
registration drive aimed specifically at the MTV voting age
non-voter. They drove around the country in a RV holding rallys
and would urge people to register to vote. They were doing this
because many of the younger voting age adults weren't registering
and seemed disinterested (I wonder why?) in politics in general.
They wanted to change that, by telling them their vote can make
    a difference.

I guess you can't fault the message...
