I purchased a used Ruger MkII that was advertised in this notes
file. The only problem ever encountered is a jam when a spent
round fails to clear the ejection port. Never had a problem
feeding from the magazine.
A friend of mine has a S&W Model 41. His has a compensator installed.
We trade off for several boxes of ammo whenever we shoot. Both guns
can shoot better than we can.
Try as many different guns that you can. Each has its own special
appeal. I bought the Ruger since it was priced right, and felt
right when I picked it up. I wouldn't mind having my friends
Smith either. I personally feel that the differences in "Quality"
and "Accuracy" are so small that the choice really boils down to
what you "Like".

You're close on that statement. It should actually say:
"BUY as many different guns that you can".

By direct experience as well as discussion with other friends, it seem that
willingness to open a safe is a sex-linked trait. I think it's similar to the
remote control and channel surfing phenomenon. My wife, despite my best
attempts to train her, will not learn the combination to the safe or even what
direction to spin the knob first.
For this reason purchase a safe and when you buy a firearm, bury it in the safe.
If on the off chance she ever actually LOOKS in the safe and spots something she
doesn't recognize and asks "when did you get THAT!" simply reply "what? oh THAT
old thing! Gawd, hon, I probably got that a couple of months before we got
married!"
Do not buy a safe that's too large; it should be crowded enough that it
disguises the growing collection :-)
Roak
Ps. The reality: I'm too excited about the purchase of a new firearm to keep
it a secret :-). But I stand by my position that safe opening is a sex-linked
trait.

I "had" always used the ploy - "Oh that was my Fathers/GrandFathers/Uncle
twice removed....." (you get the picture) until the day, when asked about
yet ANOTHER knick-knack, my wife responded with "Oh that: that was my
mothers."
.............. I went out and purchased a gun safe!

Buy the largest you can find and stock it as fast as you can. If
necessary store your hunting cloths, tools, etc to make it look full
and cluttered. ;-)

| Buy more than one and stick them in different areas of the house!
Then of course there's always the "false backed closet" !
My reply to my wife is: "at least I'll have the money when I
re-sell em for my daugther's college vs. you're idea of spending
is a trip to Disney World; that money is simply gone forever" ;)
If she doubts you'll sell em, buy a good used gun , keep it 3-6 months
and then announce your going to down size as a compomise ;)
Then there's the story about the bears seen in the area !!
