Diana was one of my favorite tunes. Better than Leave Me Alone
or whatever he's selling now.
Beat it was cool, too. Also Billie Jean.
But I won't get any deeper into MJ than that.
I like (some you may not consider "heavy" metal)
Robin Zander
Jeff Keith from Tesla (hee hee Motorbreath, I got it right!)
Alice Cooper
Steve Whiteman from Kix (awesome)

Charlie Sexkitten (not *too* metallic, but something about that

Gotta differ with you mate,
Ian Gillian had/has one of the best voices for
rock-HM ever on this planet.
Give him a break.......he's pushing forty (if
not there already)
Unbelievable power, range, and expression.
I never heard of the Ian Gillian Band, but if
it is something that was put together lately,
it's definately not his best.
Unbelievable power, range and expression.......
a lot of emotion..........wicked vibrato.....
a definate screamer........
Maybe you should listen to a couple of cuts from
a DEEP PURPLE album or even......
Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack.........
Twenty years of singing like that is bound to
take it's toll.

504.28 | ... a word or two about Gillan... | GIAMEM::HARRINGTON | Dreaming of pictures of home | Thu Mar 09 1989 17:24 | 24 |

It's definitely spelled "Gillan."
Gillan WAS one of rock's premier vocalists, but for some reason he
never quite got the fan following he deserved. Now, though, as someone said,
he's lost a lot of his range and power. He's still not BAD, though, and by vir-
tue of his earlier efforts, he remains my own #1 vocal idol.
The Ian Gillan Band was formed in 1974 or so, right after Gillan
parted ways with Deep Purple. He kept different versions of that band going al-
most right up until he joined (for the one album, which I detested) Black
Sabbath. Now, NO ONE has ever been a bigger fan of Gillan than me - but even *I*
have to admit that the Ian Gillan Band, as a whole, sucked. The music was
NOTHING remotely like Purple's; it was more jazz-experimental, with strange
arrangements and instrumentation. I bought two or three albums, listened to them
a few times - and threw them out. So - I don't know - it MAY be that the person
who said Gillan sucked when he was with the IGB just didn't like the type of
MUSIC they were doing, rather than rating Gillan himself.
Still, as I said, Gillan gets my vote as the best (former) voice in
rock. I don't have any qualifications for voting on anybody more current.

If someone is said to have the best voice, it means
(to me anyways) that ...
1) (S)he can hold a note for an 'extended' time period
2) (S)he can attain very high and very low notes
3) (S)he can scream without cracking her/his voice
If u go by these guidelines, then the following are out:
Lemmy - not capable of hitting high notes
Brian Johnson - can't scream without cracking
? Sweet - can't hit low notes (ha ha!! kidding!!)

Come on. The best musicians aren't always the
most pleasing. Most people would rather listen
to Poison than Vinnie Moore, but are they better
musicians?? Come on. Same thing goes with
vocals. My definition of a great singer is one
with voice control. He can control pitch, tone,
clarity and a number of other things without
damaging his vocal cords. Dio wins there. I
admit I find TNT's voice more pleasing to the
ear, but he is hardly a better singer. You want
length? Manowar wins. You want range, Prince
wins (now HE'S a great singer), you want a laugh,
Axl wins . . .

I think Dickinson is probably one of the best in terms of vocal
range etc.. but my favourite is David Coverdale. He may not have
the range of Tate or Dickinson, but the guy is versatile (Listen
to his old Northwinds stuff and then to 1987). I just like him.
Shame that WS has gone down the drain a bit.
I think the worst singer in terms of vocal range is Ozzy. the guy
has a great VOICE, but he can't sing for toffee - hell, I can *sing*
better than Ozzy Osbourne. The guy is one of my fav dudes though.
My all time hate for vocals has to be Don Dokken. I suppose he
has a good voice, but I can't stand the sound of it.

Rob Halford - Judas Priest
Halfords voice has range. He sings very clearly from low notes to
exremely high ones. Very few metal singers have this quality. True,
there are some that sound perfect at a certain level, but Rob Halford
could sing just about any level of music. Any Priest fan has heard
examples of how clear he can sing on tunes like "Last Rose" and
"Dreamer Deciever". Most people are used to listening to the high end
of his voice like "Screaming For Vengence" or "Jawbreaker". I've been
into Metal for many years and have never heard another voice with
quality range like this one. It stands alone.

Gillan? He's also one of my favorite. I'd also have to include the
singer for Bloodrock (a band whom, no doubt, many of you have either
never heard of or had the "pleasure" of hearing). I don't know how many
people consider Aerosmith HM (to me there rock) but Steven Tyler HAS to
have one of the best voices out there (IMHO).

I also consider (reply .87 ?) David Byron one of the best voices.
Freddy Mercury deserves also all the recognition (there was even some Heep/Byron
influence on the first Queen albums).
Glenn Hughes (bass/vocals for Deep Purple and later Black Sabbath) has also a
great voice and this was a problem in Deep Purple because he was competing
with David Coverdale (who is also a great singer). Hughes' voice was deeper
and warmer than Coverdale's at that time.

| Ah.. I see where you are confused.
What I was trying to say, allthough it was a bit vague, is that I would
rather have attitude in a guitarist than talent. Example:Ace
Frehley,Mick Mars,Kurt Cobain...They have sold out more arenas than Vai
or Satch will ever dream of. That's if you consider 'success' by how
many arenas a person can sell out. I don't think that is true all the
time...I consider Yngwie to be a success because he started a major
trend for back then and shall always be credited for it.
Whether he chooses to do anything with his ego/talent these days is
up to him. Allthough is trend has ended and his style is not too
popular these days, I still consider him a success.
As for myself...I'd like to think I have more talent than ego.
As for my ego it is pretty non-existent...

| Friz,
We're not saying Yngwie doesn't deserve credit for his former success.
I mean, it was quite a feat for a 17 year old guitarist from Sweden who
spoke little english to get his tapes to a record producer in LA, get
him signed and moved to the US, and then have 3 albums under his belt
within 2 years!! It was a big deal, but unfortuately, Yngwie let it
all go to his head. When he wanted to play all the instruments on his
albums, direct his band, write all the songs and produce his albums, he
started putting out crap, because he does not have the talent to do all
of that stuff and produce quality work. Prince has the talent to do
all that stuff and produce a great product, but Yngwie doesn't.
To me, Yngwie's best stuff was his early BAND days, when he contributed
to the writing, and let the production to a professional. Once he
tried to control everything, it just fell apart.
Today, Yngwie cannot PAY people to play in his band! It's just like
those other "fast" guitarists ... Darren Householder (kicked out of
Jeff Pilson's band), Toshi Iseda (cannot keep a band due to his tude,
was recently kicked out of Heaven's Edge), Tommy McClearen (kicked out
of UFO)...shall I go on??

that doesn't have a tude'...Greg House. The reason I don't play in a

It has nothing to do with if he sucks or not because that
is something I wouldn't know.
Buck: I agree...I've been baiting you this whole time.
I don't REALLY like Yngwie that much...EXCEPT FOR THE STEELER dAYZ!!

one that sounds excellent, that nobody else can sound like. After all, if
others can copy the voice, it's not a "one-of-a-kind" voice that oozes
greatness.
IMO, Layne Stayley's voice would be fairly easy for many vocalists to duplicate.

Ronnie James Dio.

Geoff Tate - Queensryche
Lane Staley - AIC
Bruce Dickinson - Iron Maiden/Solo
James Dewar - Robin Trower

Deep Purple were an obvious choice as a band for us to cover. They were one of
the first bands to combine progressive elements with metallic overtones. They
also use keyboards as a predominant and lead instrument in the same way that we
do. We originally chose and rehearsed "Child In Time", but on the day before
the "Uncovered" show, we recorded a version of "Perfect Strangers" with Bruce
Dickinson on vocals for his BBC1 radio show in England. It felt so powerful
and alive that we decided to go with this track instead.

re: .264
Actually Shawn, it is a live version, like their 'big medley', and
Elton John/Zeppelin covers. And I believe it to be James Labrie singing
cuzz it sure don't sound like Brucie Woocie on it! I will check the
liner though when I get a chance, I could be wrong.

| Again, to avoid further confusion.
The two versions -- Bruce's and James' -- are from the SAME LIVE SHOW!
Difference is ... Bruce sang one, James sang the other -- period!
James' version is on the A Change of Seasons EP. Bruce's version is
only available on rare bootleg discs (which I had sold one of these
to GTI).

Graham Bonnett bores me.
I think I've said this before, maybe 15 or 20 times.
