217.0. "Thanksgiving!" by ELMAGO::CGRIEGO (Homey don't play dat!) Wed Nov 27 1991 15:16

Well, it's that time of year again. Time to stuff our fat little
faces, throw down on some alka-seltzer, and kick back with our friends
and/or families and watch some football! It's also the time of year
when we can step back and reflect on all of our blessings (some more
than others) and thank God for them. (Please, I realize that there are
many now-a-days that don't believe in God, and I hope this note won't
go down that rat-hole, but the origins of the holiday are about giving
thanks to God and even though the indians didn't believe in God they
were welcomed to join in, just as I hope those that don't believe will
still feel welcomed to join in here.)
I think that this (giving thanks) is a great idea, because if
you're like me, we probably spend most of the year complaining about
all the things we want and need that we don't have, and we often
overlook all the countless things that we do have. I mean just the fact
that you are reading this means that you probably (though it's
debatable) have a great job, and that you're not on the streets, or
going hungry. This is just one example of the many blessings that we
often take for granted, and I'm sure if you think about it, a list can
    be formed in no time.

I'll start it off with the things I give thanks for:

My beatiful wife (Joann), son (Isaiah), and the one in the oven.

My job here at Digital. (even though some times I hate it!)

Good health, a roof over my head, food in my stomach, a good car
the love of a large family, and the fun I get from noting with you
guys (specially those Donk knuckleheads) in here.

I'm thankful that God gave me a body that, while imperfect, allows me
to attempt what I'd like to do....

I'm thankful that I'm the King of the Droods(tm)

I'm thankful for rugby, and what it's done for my life and self-confidence.

I'm thankful for sunsets, wolf pups, and snow.

I'm thankful for the love of a wonderful and loyal dog

I'm thankful for the ability to laugh at myself.

I'm thankful for the ability to laugh at /Don.

And finally, I'm thankful for all my friends, both SPORTS noters and

And finally Mom, Dad and Tim...

217.6Somewhat selfish, but...SHALOT::MEDVIDWild Hearted SonWed Nov 27 1991 16:1632
1991 has been the worst year of my life. Lots of emotional roller
coaster rides. Linda left me in March. She gets a teenage boyfriend
who, in some psychotic frenzy, threatens to put a bullet in my head if
I don't break off all ties with her. We get back together only to fall
apart again and she goes right back to him.

In the meantime, this all leads up to a promiscuous lifestyle that I
never imagined being in. That's been fun, but unfulfilling.

Yet, I still want to say I'm thankful for:

    - My new job at Digital as a Publishing and Document Management Project
Manager. This is the most interesting and aggravating job I've ever
had. I'm putting in some long hours and at the end of the week there's
very little to show for it...but I feel more important to this company
    than I ever have before.

    - My friends both in and out of this conference who have made me smile
and laugh through all this emotional trash.

    - The Pittsburgh Penguins who who thrilled me all the way to the
Stanley Cup. The Pittsburgh Pirates who captivated me all summer. The
Pittsburgh Steelers who...well, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

    - The fact that I played little league with a wooden bat and not an
aluminum one. (Stole that from the new GAP commercial).

    - The fact that '92 just has to be better.

    Have a good one.

dan'l....

Never forget that first, the best defense is a good offense.

Second, never forget that you know two ruggers who play prop. You've
never met either Mac or I, but I doubt there's any pipsqueak teenagers
out there who'd want to go a few rounds with the two of us.

Psychotic or not, he'll poop his diapers when the Chainsaw and
Mac get done with him....

Really, I'm thankful for my wonderful wife, Ginnie.

My son-in-law Doug, and my soon expected-to-be son-in-law, Scott.

Chin_up, dan'l. For one thing, 1992 cain only improve things, as you
correctly mention. For another, there's still loads to be thankful for
despite your hard luck. (Not the thing the "expert" psychiatrists tell
you to say to someone down on his life circumstances, BTW.)

And finally you should remember that you're the ONLY noter in this
whole danged file who's ever shut me up cold. Yes, you're the ONLY
one whose reply I considered, contemplated, and had to sadly shake
my haid and agree that I could very well be wrong.

Besides from my family, friends, etc., I'm thankful that I still have a
job and a roof over my haid in this non-recession.

I only hope 1992 can be better for everyone - but with the prospects of
a worsening economy burgeoned by an unbelievable debt - and what
promises to be the ugliest campaign ever - I can't get to optimistic.

Hey - but have a good day everyone.

    Hawk -

When we finally get there, your suffering will be legendary. :-)

Carlos - Thanks for starting this note.

Believe it or not, I'm thankful for this file. I've met some of my
best friends at Digital here. We've all had our trials and
tribulations, and this space affords the sometimes necessary comic
relief. It's also been a direct lead to a revived social life :-)

I'm grateful to be employed by DEC. More than any company I've ever
been associated with, it encourages its employees to be contributing
members of a community, to try to resolve the problems that they see,
and treats us as adults. That's surprisingly rare in the world we live
    in.

And finally, I'm grateful that I can look at impending changes in my
life, as an empty nest looms large, and see it as a challenge to try
something new and move forward. New horizons, new vistas, new
possibilities that weren't there when I had to be "home with the kid".

217.14Attention: Dan'l gets up on his soapboxSHALOT::MEDVIDWild Hearted SonWed Nov 27 1991 17:0857
Hey, here's another thanks for Thanksgiving:

Thanks to cool SPORTS noters like ya'll who, when the chips are down
and you're feeling low, are right there by your side. Some of the best
damn friends I got...even if it is just electronic.

If ya care to know more about this teenage psycho, press RETURN. If
    not, NEXT UNSEEN.

PS: Haven't seen Tales From the Crypt lately. Tell me more.

This is how smart he is. Those death threats he made back in May...he
left them on my answering machine...identifying himself and everything.
He's this little, scrawny Greek with a street gang mentality and
    clothes to match. Colors.

Now I'm not a violent person at all, but this was just way too off the
edge for me to ignore. So step number one was to call a friend of mine
who could get me a gun. I asked for a handgun just to have to keep
hidden away just in case this weirdo meant what he said and came after
    me in my home.

Well, said friend didn't have any handguns that week, but he said he'd
bring me what he had. 45 minutes later he shows up at my door with two
assault rifles and a sawed off. I took the latter, and put it under my
    bed.

Step two was to call the police and make a report just in case
something happened to me out and about. The police said the report
wasn't complete unless they had his last name. I said it was something
Greek, but that's all I knew. They said they'd have to call him. Once
they assured me they would be professional, I gave them my permission.
About 15 minutes later, my phone rings.

"Mr. Medvid, you are dealing with an idiot. This ******* didn't
believe I was a police officer. He thought I was you pretending to be
a police officer and asked me to come over and prove it otherwise and
that he'd crack my head open. I think I'll pay him a visit at 6AM
    tomorrow."

Not much happened after that except that Linda and I made another go at
it. It didn't work out...again. Then, knowing full well what this
psycho had done to me, went right back to him. That's what hurt the
    most.

    Women.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. It's been there for a
    long time.

    	--dan'l

PS: I'd also like to thank the country of Panama for sending me the
specimen that has Linda's blood boiling every time she sees her.
Psychological vindication is the best way.

I'm thankful that someday I'll be able to party wif Hawk!

Really, I'm thankful to be employed - last year at this time I was on the edge.

I'm thankful that I'm healthy enough to go out and run a few miles every day.

I'm thankful that no matter how shi**y a day I have, one "Dadeee" from Lindsey can
make me feel better.

I'm thankful for "knowing" the ::SPORTS crew, and that I'm not the only one who loved
the old Packer teams. 8^)

Have a great holiday everyone!

Jeez, I have so much to be thankful for I don't even know where to start.

I'm still thankful for Digital. Times are tough and the pressure is
enormous but it's still the only company I can imagine working for.

I'm thankful for this Notes conference. I've been here for 5 years now
and it has its ups and downs but I'm totally hooked on it. Have been for
a long time. I enjoy meeting fellow Noters and all the exchanges that go
 on here. It's a treat.

You know something else ??? I'm thankful that I stuck with it and got a
good education. I'm not trying to be elitist here but there is so much
shit that goes on this world due to sheer ignorance. I cherish the
challenge to keep an open mind and to reasonably critique the supposedly
 sacred cows of this world.

Lastly, I'm thankful for my family. The HUNTcluster is the most precious
thing I've got and I'm both terrified and thrilled at the thought of
marching these three little girls into their adulthood. Young life is so
 precious ... please cherish it.

[Aside: a close friend and colleague in our office yesterday lost their
baby daughter in what looks like a crib death ... please pray for all the
children. Things are very subdued in Charlotte today. Cindy and I
spent a lot of time lasted night just shaking our heads and hugging our
 MicroHUNTs.]

Have a nice Thanksgiving everyone ...

 Bob Hunt

P.S. I'm thankful for Dean Smith, too. I haven't seen grounds for
debate as fertile as this one in a long time. His annual chokejobs are
so very delicious. I can't wait for 1992. If there is a God, it'll be
UMass over Carolina in the first round.

You certainly have style...and I like it. To steal a phrase from Hawk,

I wanna party wif you dude!

I'm sure Lindsay does it for you...that's got to be the greatest thrill

Also, the old Packer teams were sweet, weren't they? Sublime execution

I'm thankful for having a good job at DEC.

I'm thankful that I have the best friends anyone could ask for!

I'm thankful that the banks just let me buy my very 1st BRAND NEW

I'm thankful for this "relief" notes conference.

I'm thankful for the closness of the family that I grew up in. Even
though now we're all grown and scattered across 3 states.

I'm thankful for my new wife Mary (2.5 months) and the way the marriage
    has gone so far.

I'm thankful for my seemingly unending good health, and the good days
that my wife has. Hopefully someday the doc will find the right
combination of meds to make all days good days.

I'm thankful for working at DEC. Not all companies treat their
employees like humans instead of numbers. The job has almost always
been interesting, sometime challenging, and always a learning
experience. A steady paycheck in the recent times has not always been
    there for everyone.

I'm thankful for ::SPORTS. It has livened my life during some long

I'm thankful for you all, who do make me smile and laugh, when I can

I, too, am thankful fer all of you ::SPORTSters out there who brighten
my day, and have made my trips up into New England enjoyable.

I'm also thankful that lasted night wasn't any worse than it was.

I was driving from Pittsbrugh to Weirton(weirdtown) W. Va and had just
cleared the FOrt Pitt Tunnels on the west side of Pittsburgh when
traffic came to a screeching halt. Well, I stopped, but the guy in the
van behind me didn't notice everything stopped until he was about 25
feet off of my rear bumper, and locked his brakes up, and slammed into
    the back ov my car.

My car was driveable(barely) but my back and neck are bigtim sore
today, plus somehow, I pulled a few tendons in the right arm. Fer the
mosted part though, I'm OK. Took tonight off to recupe a little.

HOpe everybody's Turkey Day is enjoyable AND SAFE!!!!

    Maybe it saved your life?

Whaddya mean "Foxy Lady", it's a Magic Lantern T-shirt.
Wasn't wearing it at the time though.

Anybody ever try to drive a car with the backrest of the front seat

I thought it was a Magic Lantern t-shirt. You're pretty confused

Thanksgiving.

This is a tough year to sit and try and give thanks for a lot of things.
I cannot ever remember any other year in my 34 when I was so unsure of
so many things. It is not an emotion that wears well on this man.

So, I went back to basics.....

I want to give thanks for parents who love me, and are
totally supportive of me in all my ventures, even the earring.
I could not have asked for a better set of parents, if I could
	have chosen them myself.

I want to give thanks for a brother who I'm getting closer to
all the time. It wasn't always so, but as the years go by
it gets better. It's a nice feeling having a "little"
brother (at 6'2" he's not littler than me) who you can install
Windows for, or help set up a CONFIG.SYS for.

I want to give thanks for all my friends. Like a roaring fire
on the hearth, friends drive off the chill at night. Being
able to count on them, and know that they count on me is good
stuff, the kind that lasts through thick and thin.

I want to give thanks for all the SPORTS noters. Many times
in the four years I've been noting in here, you all have saved
my sanity many times. Whether I was laughing with you all
or crying at departures, SPORTS is surely one of the foundations
	of my life at Digital.

I want to give thanks for rugby. You only know the why if you
play the game, so I'll spare you all here....

I want to give thanks for all my blessings. I don't give thanks
enough for those, and sometimes take them for granted.

Finally, I want to give thanks to someone who makes all things
	magical and special......
