Underscores should not be used in host/domain names at all ...
In some RFC (the number escaped me) mentions them as not to be
used characters .

1861.2 | Is it legal? - I don't know ... | VIRGIN::SUTTER | Who are you ??? - I'm BATMAN !!! | Thu Feb 06 1997 08:29 | 12 |
| cmon had a problem with underscores in hostnames since the cluster map
used them as separators.
I think this problem is fixed in the latest releases and there are patches
for the old ones.
I don't know wether it is legal to have underscores in hostnames (I think
it is).

As per RFC952 no underscores should be used in hostnames.
Bind from version 4.9.4 onwards will check for illegal
hostnames and considers the zone to have a syntax error.

1861.4 | What problems would show up, using underscores? | SALEM::HARRIS_M | | Thu Feb 13 1997 15:46 | 9 |

Now that I know we shouldn't be using _ in node names. Are there any
known errors/bugs that would arise because of the using of under-scores
in the Hostname, for either the machine itself or for say the memory
channel hostname.
Thanks,
Matt

1861.5 | cluster_cnx | NETRIX::"mcdonald@decatl.alf.dec.com" | John McDonald | Mon Mar 31 1997 16:04 | 8 |
| If an underscore is not a legal character, why does the Trucluster
installation automatically insert a node name called 'cluster_cnx'
into the hosts file?

This problem has been filed as QAR 46932 (unfortunately since
June 1996). I am requesting that this be resolved in the next
release.

1861.7 | Will be fixed in wave 4 | NETRIX::"myrdal@zk3.dec.com" | Gregory P. Myrdal | Thu Apr 03 1997 13:59 | 16 |
| Hi,
I did a little more research on this topic and found out that the QAR
and the problem has been scheduled to be fixed in the wave 4 release.
It is incorrect (I assume simply because someone not being familiar
to rfc952) but since it does not seem to effecting anyone a fix in
wave 4 appears to be adequate.
BTW, a new install could change the cluster_cnx to a another name
if they wanted. The reason that this is not being investigated
for wave35 is that rolling upgrade causes problems. Ie. its not
seamless. If there were problems as a result of this, engineering
is willing to look further into the problem.
