541.0. "not fade away?" by STAR::64881::DEBESS (ThingsWe'veNevrSeenSeemFamiliar) Wed Aug 21 1996 21:46

This here note is prompted by something started by Chris in
the Phish note:

"Seeing how alot of Deadheads now go to see Phish for musical enjoyment
If the band were to break up who do you think would be the next
trendy band that this now huge group of people would dig??"

which set me to thinking...trendy? are we into trendy? ;-)

well, anyways, my mind always reverts back to deadness and I'm gonna
turn this question right around.

some note I read yesterday while catching up sent me back to note 33
and a perused it a little and encountered these 2 recent quotes:

The Further Festival also sets the stage for the surviving Dead members
to reunite, Weir says, though under a different name than the Grateful Dead.
'If we all pursue our own musical directions and then come back together
some time in the future, we'll have a whole lot more to bring to the party,
a whole lot more musical experience' he says. 'And you bet I'd like to
revisit the [Dead's] catalog, the approach, the attitude, all of that. If
there's one thing that the Grateful Dead experience has taught us all, is
to *never* rule anything in or out.'

and

Says Lesh: "We will play together in some form, but nobody knows when."

and now I've seen Phil playing with Bobby and Mickey and I've seen huge
smiles on their laughing faces and I've heard them having fun playing
music that sounded real good to my ears. Which naturally leads me to
ponder "hmmm...-will- they play together again on a semi-regular basis?!?"

so what do y'all think? Do you think these guys are going to get back
together and put on some shows for us to dig?

There's a big fly in the ointment: the Furthur Festival lost a ton of
money with few sell-out shows. This summer was terrible for bands and
venues with few sell-outs overall for any act.

Given that, I think they'll continue to play locally around the Bay
area and tour at smaller venues. I doubt there will be another tour
the size of the Further Festival next year.

I'm not talking about Furthur Jamie - I'm talking about
	Phil&Bobby&Mickey(&Vince?)&? playin' Dead music.

...and, small venues would be just fine with me :-)

my own opinion is the Dead is just that, dead.
and, they should be.
jerry is gone, he was the guiding light.
he was the one with the magic.

541.4evolutionJARETH::LARUau contraire...Thu Aug 22 1996 14:3313
The boys will continue to play, with various combinations
of musicians... at some point, some combination will really *click.*

That group will tour, playing tunes, some of which will be dead
tunes. It won't be the dead, it won't be the dead scene.
It will happen after enough time has gone by and there is enough
chemistry so that it's clear that the new group is not the
pseudo-dead, and that the new musician(s) are not expected
to be the reincarnation of Jerry.

    I'm looking forward to it.

i think they, and the scene, will decline and fade...

for good or ill... that' s how i see it...

i believe any future tours wil be on smaller scales...
maybe some big summer tours but not much... i think
they will go back to the kinds of shows that made them
who they are... small venues... intimate shows... with
a few hard core wierdos like us diggin' em at every turn...

for the most part the ride is over but they are addicted to playing
just like we're addicting to digging and we'll help each other wind
down to a manageable level... :^) no sense going cold turkey...

as another data point... Jefferson some-sort-of-airborne-vehicle
still tours... a couple of weeks ago they played worcester at
the El Morocco's Citi Room...

for about 100 people...

i hate to say it but in 5 years, i bet that's what we're looking at...
well, i dunno... maybe that's a good thing...

I think so, too. There just isn't a vehicle to guide/carry
all that energy. Though what people will replace it with
    isn't clear to me.

It'll be like Bobby and the Midnites, Go Ahead, Bob n Rob, Comfort,
Robert Hunter, Phil and Ned, Mickey and the Hartbeats,, JGB etc etc etc
just with different band names (of course no JGB)....only problem is those
bands did it between the tours....now that's all we get.

It will never ever be the same. We all know that. Jerry was a musical
shaman in the greatest sense and he can never be replaced.

But will we come close ? I think a lot depends on Phil. Personally,
I thought Jerry was the guiding light and the force behind the band as do
a lot of, most, folks, but I think Phil was the next in line so to speak.
How many times have you heard (and experienced!) "when Phil is on the band
is on". True enough. If Phil is a part of any new adventure, I think
it has the potential to come close. But I'm not holding my breath.

Is it going to happen ? Band members are what, around 50 ? That says
    a lot me thinks...

And I'll pass on Bobby and the Midnites. They were lame in the 70's/80's
    too (IMO).

I don't think any band can do what they did again. They spent years
constantly touring and building up their hardcore following by swinging
through towns year after year. Not many, if any, bands do that now. The
attention most people spend on bands today is determined by the length
of the video, not how often they come to town to play.

The only person that even comes close to touring that hard these days
is Bruce Hornsby, and he's limited his time out to spend more time with
    his family.

It would be nice to see another Furthur type festival but it will be
in smaller venues, which is not bad news. It would be nice to see them
bring out more newer acts and mingle in some older ones that are still
around. It would have been good exposure for the Starship to tour with
Furthur as well as the reunited Big Brother, which just swung through
    town a few days ago.

That's one the primary thing I'll always remember about the Dead. As
big as they got they still took their act out on the road and
experimented musically in front of a crowd. The nights they were on
they were *ON*. The nights they were off, well.... a certain Black
Peter in Worcester comes to mind;-)

[i think i put this in the fish note. and it should be here]

I like Popper too. And the guitar guy seems to be unleashed during the
live shows...or at least the times I saw them. They crank.

If we are talking about dead replacement bands here then I think the
MAJOR qualifying factor has to be can you go see them 2 or 3 or 6
nights in a week?

I couldn't with BT. Dave Matthews doesn't do much for me....
I could go see Todd a few times in a week but that would require
real touring since he doesn't stay in one place too long. Incidentally
the kid (todd) WOWED me the other night. Incredible show. Maybe a
bit soft in the middle but Mr. Guitar is BACK!
