    Anybody get their mail order back for the Clifford Ball
    yet??/  I got mine yesterday...can't wait!!!! (OK calm
    down, it's not until August...sheez :-D ).  Anyway
    the directions to the Base say I-87 exit 36...anybody
    know how easy/hard it will be to get to the campground
    off the exit.  I hoping (no praying) it's not going
    to be as bad as Highgate was.....

    Anyone know when do Tickermaster tix go on sale for "Clifford Ball"? 
    (why did they call it that anyhow???)

    Clifford Ball is the putative name of the fictional venue
    at which "A Live One" was recorded.  

    See yesterday's Phoenix for a cool looking ad (in the form
    of an invitation from the band) for Plattsburg.  I'm not
    sure when the tix go on sale but I think it's soon.

    The real story of how Phish came up with the name "Clifford
    Ball" really doesn't give any insight as to why they referred
    to it on A Live One and for the shows in Plattsburgh.
    
    Anyhow, the story is they flew in for a gig somewhere
    in Virginia at a small airport.  They saw a billboard
    in the airport which said, "The Clifford Ball -- A
    Beacon of Light in the World of Flight".  Now, how
    that has anything to do with A Live One or the Plattsburgh
    shows is beyond me, but Phish is Phish --> strange bucnh
    of guys.  Maybe Trey will reveal this secret at the shows,
    maybe so, maybe not :-D

    Quite frankly, I think it's time for Phish to belt out a Dead cover in
    honor of jerry.   This show would be the perfect place for that. 
    Members of Phish have already spoken of how the Dead were such an
    enourmous influence on them...let's hear about it!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Phish has had mixed things to say about the dead in the past....everyone
    had something good to say about Jerry when he died...

    well for the one bootleg i was subjected to of them in the Front in 
    Burlington it sure sounds as tho these gents made their livelihood
    covering Dead tunes.....

    Speaking of A Live One...  I picked it up through a CD HQ cd club
    about a week ago, part of an 11 for 1 deal- real glad I did! (ALso 
    got Talking Heads "Popular Favorites/Sand in the Vasoline", wow! what 
    a great album! and a bunch of other good cd's, but I digress...)

    NEway, I was floored by the time Stash, song 2 disc 1, cranked through
    the stereo!  Phish sure sounds a LOT better than I remember from a couple
    of tapes I've heard - one from 1990 Colorado, another from NYE 94 or so.  
    Those tapes were ok, but it just didn't click.  A prior complaint of mine 
    with Phish was that they never seemed to slow it down and get spacy; it 
    was always like set the speed control to 11 and don't look back. But this 
    album get really spacy in parts, with great jammin!

    I know this LeBlanc guy is repected around here in the
    Digital Dead community, but I think you are very wrong
    about Phish.  OK, you have one tape I think (Front), you
    didn't like.  Let me spin you NYE '95 at MSG, if you
    are not completely floored by the Mike's -> Auld Lang
    Syne -> Weekapaug, (well not really a true segue, because
    of the setbreak after that insane Mike's, whatever) you
    are nuts.  Have you been to a show???  They are NOT the
    Dead, not even close.  The comparisions/simliarities come
    in two-fold, IMO. First, the music is improvisational,
    they jam, change tempo, tease other songs in a jam, 
    have unexpected segues, etc, etc, etc.  The second is
    the scene, but that really is different too.  The "average"
    Phishead (pardon the stereotype) is a kid about 17-22 years
    of age, who is, IMHO, a wanna-be hippie.  But, most of these
    kids are at the shows, 'cuz they really get into the music,
    most, mind you.
    
    And anyone on this notefile who likes Phish knows, the actual
    music (content, arrangement, lyrics, etc.) is a world apart
    from The Dead, besides the extended jamming and random
    setlists.  LeBlanc, this is not a flame (that's the last
    thing I'm doing), just wondering as to why you are turned off
    by them.  It's not a big deal, I'm just curious as to why.

    recently as last week..."GO, you'll love the scene..." but i need the
    music...guess i'm just an old fart...Rich Fromm tryed to convert me
    when he passed thru here last summer with 5 dead tapes and 50 Phish
    tapes...didn't work....but i have never been to a Phish show.

    Screw the scene.  The music is the only reason to go.

    Saw DMB Friday night, I was there for the music, the two jerks next to
    me were there for the party.  And this is in the front row!  I'm about
    through going to shows, the whole concept of civility is lost on these
    yahoos.  Yak, yak, yak.  God help you if there's a semi-quiet part in
    the tune, must be boring, just an excuse to yap and annoy your
    neighbors some more.  God forbid anyone would just sit and listen, try
    and get into it.

    Add to that the uptight security and Mansfield's Finest roaming the lot
    on bicycles, the insultingly-overpriced imitation beer, the long lines
    getting out... I must be too old.

    Sorry, just had to vent.  The music was great but hard to enjoy given
    the scene.

    I totally agree with te last two replies about the scene.
    I should have made that clear before, that is the last 
    reason I go to a show...I could give a &$(#%# about the
    scene.  I go for the music, specifically Phish.  Hey,
    that's cool, if you just don't like the music, you don't
    like.  I wouldn't dare shove it down your throat, nor
    should anyone else.  Granted I'm not in that age
    bracket either (17-22), but maybe why I'm "into" Phish
    is because I started listening to them in the age bracket.
    
    I must chime in also about quiet parts at concerts.
    What is wrong with some people.  Phish has quiet parts
    in they shows (acoustic numbers, quiet jams, and so on)
    and usually everyone's well behaved.  But sometime....
    man I wish I could staple up the mouths on some
    of those jerks that feel this compelling need to yell
    during these moments.

    Thought I'd follow that vent up with a quick note about Phish music.

    The whole reason I am into Phish is the music, the scene is
    invigorating purely because it is so full of energy.  I never had a
    rush in a concert before like I did the first Phish show I went to and
    the crowd came to its feet when the band came out like nothing I've
    ever seen.  Such enthusiasm, and it flows naturally from the music.  I
    guess I still will go to Phish shows because, for the most part, the
    scene hasn't yet ruined the musical experience.  Though I don't know
    what this year will bring.

    The band is the most incredible combination of musical styles I've ever
    heard, and they've got a knack for building up the energy to a place
    where it just takes off into the stratosphere.  Trey's soaring and
    majestic guitar solos are something to behold.  The spacey jams are my
    favorite, where they take off into something barely resembling music
    after a while but still manage to bring it home at the end.  They've
    got rock, jazz, folk, bluerass, gospel, you name it...  great harmonies
    and as a unit they play off each other with great skill.  Ahhh...

    Writing about music is like dancing about architecture right? I can't
    seem to put it in words.  Guess ya hadda be there.

	i'll play too...   as you've no doubt noticed, there are some heads
	here who dig the phish scene and others who don't...  much like the
	dead scene i might add...  

	for my part, i am of mixed opinion on it...

	i appreciate the jams, the improvisations, the teases and all
	those other dead-like things you mentioned...  they are a talented
	bunch and i wish them well...  i have gone to see them live, and may
	do so again, but i'm not in a great rush...  :^/

	the thing is, like many others here will probably attest, the music
	just doesn't evoke the same kind of response in me that the dead 
	do/did/does...  sure, a great bit of party music, and a lot of phun,
	but for me, lacking a bit of "soul"...

	same goes in quadruplicate for the scene...  while the dead had
	thier problems with the scene too, i think the phish scene is more about
	the party than it is about the community...  it's about the cool time
	"i" can have... the cool things "i" bought...  the great stuff "i" did...
	the money "i" made...

	hippie wanna-bes???  please don't take offense but, my experience 
	indicates more clueless kids than anything else...  nothing against clueless
	kids... we all were there once...  but seems more like how cool the party 	
	can be rather than how cool the world can be if this mini-society can 
	foster it's ideals in "the real world"...  

	phish/dead comparisons are like apples and bananas...  :^)   

	the live and recorded stuff is very different, but still, i have dead discs
	that i will never tire of... phish has at least one good song that i really
	like on each of thier discs... 

	sure, good tunes, talented guys, and a good time...  but they fall
	short on many other aspects...  of course, your mileage may vary... :^)

    I go to concerts for the show and the scene.  I like the opportunity to
    hang out and cut loose.   I like the phish scene, even though it makes
    me feel old at times.  Many youngsta's who are much younga than me. 
    The music does have an energy that rages!  It starts rolling and
    progresses and progresses and....  
    
    I went to the dead for the scene as well.   I loved the music and the
    people.

    Yah, that is the most cigarette smoking crowd I ever saw.  I think
    everyone that sat near us at providence last year chain smoked the
    whole show.

    anyways..from what i see...the Phish scene will spiral out of control
    within the next year..they will suffer from the same calamities that
    the Boys did over the last 2 years...More ticketless people...more
    drunken boobs (of which i have been known to be one :^o )
    The will absorb all the negative overflow from the Dead that was scene
    oriented..and that was a large part
    I was talking about Phish to some young hipsters at a Dead show once
    and it appeared that the Phisheads seem to play a game and see how many
    shows they can scam into....
    Now i paid for all the shows i went to when i went to see the Dead.
    This attitude was apparent in Vermont last year when ticketless hordes
    threatened to "tear down the gates" and get in scott free....
    Why should *I* have to pay  higher ticket prices to pay for more
    security cause some flaming asses want to have a good time at no
    cost? these were my vacations.
    I really don't see anything worthwhile in their music...
    Trey or whoever writes their songs is no Robert Hunter or Barlow
    One song has 4 words for a chorus.....rather lyrically challenging
    Yeah they cam jam....very well...but like Da ve said, they really
    invoke no emotion in me when i hear their music...
    And the more they try and distance themselves from the Dead, the more
    it is apparent that they are aware of the "homogeneity" of both their's
    and the Dead's fan base.....
    
    Neo Hippie bands are now being massed produced in cookie cutter fashion
    and Phish to me is the Mrs Field's of the lot....
    

    at dead shows, I never had a problem looking at people and just saying
    "ssshhh, this is so sweet" during quite parts....never got anything back 
    except a smile...tom, did ya try that at DMB?

    Some of Phish's songs phase me, other don't.  I think YEM sucks, but I
    love a nice long rockin Bathtub or Possum.  They certainly don't slack 
    in the covers dept...always do a quality job of covers, that's why I'd 
    like to hear Phish do a Dead cover now that their rather skilled. 
    Sometimes I wish they'd shake their jazz overtone...for the most part,
    I think their grate! 

    Another thing i forgot to add
    
    the Dead to me is as much a part of Americana as Levi's or Harley
    Davidson....
    There was Cowboy Neal at the wheel
    references to Kerouac abound.....
    Songs of the wild west...the rivers and mountains of our great country
    
    The Dead to me, *ARE* and always will *BE* 
    
    US Blues.....The Russians don't have em
    neither do the Chinese...nor the Germans
    
    they are as American as Apple Pie and Basbeall..and are a part of a
    great time in History
    
    Phish is from Vermont...

I'll reiterate some rePHlections from my Phirst Phish show...I wasn't very 
familiar with their music B4 my 1st show, but had heard some...the music didn't
Click with me, altho I did appreciate their musicianship...I might try it again,
but would rather a smaller venue than the Centrum...Orpheum would do it for me.
I think I need to investigate their studio work to try and "get it" before
going to another show...

Scene...SUCKED big time...clueless kids, hippie wanna bees, they were all the
same to me...and I got some Very Negative vibes form a young dude while I was
sitting in a car...just sitting in a car, and this kid comes and flips me the
finger...aaahhh, what's up widdat???   I wasn't feeling well either that
night which prolly contributed to my negative feelings about the scene, and I
had floor seats, and wasn't in the mood to stand all night...

re: idiots at shows during quiet times...sighhhhhhhhhhh...large venue shows
are holding less and less attraction to me...this is one reason...when I saw
YES for the 2nd time on their Union tour 5 years ago, there's the thick-heads
sitting in front of me...AND YOU AND I starts, one of my favorite Yes toonz...
quiet, acoustic guitar...with pauses between phrases...of course Mr. Thickskull
in front of me (with CAT hat on) has to YELLL  OOOOOwwwwwwoooooo during the
quiet pauses...yeah, buddy, we all know yer here...

minutes later he says "I love YES, that Chris Howe is awesome"  Dooooohhhhhhhh
it's Steve Howe/Chris Squire you idiot...geez...dancing/singing, that's ok,
but this need to yell at song recognition, folks must have boring lives :)))

I go to see and HEAR the MUSIC...but large scale shows are getting old...or am

    I'm really getting into Phish's latest, A Live One.  I've heard
    and have a couple of tapes, but nothing hit me like the music on
    this disc.  Seems like Phish has gotten a LOT better than from
    what I remember hearing.  A friend, catphish who some of you know,
    says he thinks Phish really started expanding musically around 1994.
    Really taking it to another level. I'm not familiar enuf with their 
    history, but it would explain why I think the latest release is really 
    hot compared to what I'd heard before.
 
    Cranking Stash or Tweezer, with the jams, _really spacy_ jams, 
    brings me close to what I got from the dead!  Can't wait to check 
    this band out live but preferably on a weekend - I'm getting too old 
    for weekday shows ;-)

    No you aren't getting old, it's annoying no matter what
    age you are.  I think we should be allowed to shoot 
    these people with paint-pellet guns...well, it would
    make me feel better :-D.
    
    Ahh, back to Phish.  This reminds of me of the huge, 
    awful thread way back between r.m.phish and r.m.gdead.
    I guess it comes down to some like Phish, some the Dead,
    some both (me) and some none.  For me, I can close
    my eyes, listen to a Dark Star, China-Rider, Playin',
    That Is For the Other One, and on, and on.  Or, I
    can listen to a Tweezer, Mike's Groove, Bowie, YEM,
    and on and on, and get that same transcedental music
    feeling, I relate to both.  
    
    I disagree with Chirs on the point that the Phish scene
    will deteriorate (spelling??).  Yeah, Phish had
    a big bunch of ticketless hordes at Red Rocks last
    year, it happens.  Ever since that, with each mail order
    and at the shows they have handed out informational flyers
    about what warning against this and other things that
    make the scene suck for them as an organization.  OK,
    it might not solve the problem, but they are trying.  And
    another things, Phish could easily charge $35 or $40+ for
    tickets, and people would still go (including myself).  But
    they don't, they keep it around $25 or so, sometimes
    a few extra for the "special shows" (three setters, New
    Year's, Halloween; each 3 set Plattsburgh show is only
    $27.50 thru mail order).  Dead actually could have charged
    $50+ for their shows, but they didn't.
    
     Well, some like'um some don't.  Hope folks don't mind 
    Phish postings around here, of course, unless a Phish
    notesfile is created.  All I can say is, if you haven't
    heard them, listen to a few tapes, better yet, try going
    to a show in the fall (Clifford Ball might be overkill
    for a first exposure, two  night, 3 sets a day, oh boy...
    ...I can't wait), give a shot.  If you don't dig'um
    cool enough.

     One more thing....
    
    Yeah A Live One is a good start to.  I read that Phish note
    (like 237 or something), and a lot of folks listened to
    them in 91, 92 and were like, "ehhhh...".  Re: 29, yes
    indeed, they did expand musically from '94 on.  A much
    bigger  and textured sound, and a lot, I mean a lot more
    experimental spacy type jams.  I've listened to them since
    like early '91 but from 94 on is when I was really hooked.
    
    If you haven't heard them for while, give it another shot,
    A Live One is a good start.

You gotta do what i do: tell 'em to shut up.
i tried the be nice routine and guess what? it got me no where.
now, i get in their face, and tell'em to stuff it.  works
nearly all the time.  i hate to resort to this, but, it works.

i like phish, i don't love them.
the music is really good, but also quite diff. than the dead.
i do appreciate phish's ability as a band, excellent musicians,
and that is what attracts me to their music.  their music does
not have the same magic, at least for me, as the dead does.  we
often talked about "IT" in here and what it meant to people.  IT
never happened (so far) with phish.  but, i remain open-minded.
i also like the scene.  good to hang out, have a few brews in
the sun, and generally enjoy a rather festive moment.  the music
first drew me in, then when i saw the scene, i liked that also.
Clifford Ball will be a fun time, but the music alone will not
make it fun.  a combo of the scene and the music makes it all a 
good time.

but, like many have pointed out, the phish scene will deteriorate
as well, just like the dead's scene.  people just don't have a lot
of respect, and most of those people are the transients-- they are
there for summer tour and probably won't be back next year, so what do
they care if the screw it up for everyone else in the future?

    I kinda like the paint ball idea! Or maybe a hackysack upside the face!
    I dunno, I'm no killjoy but I really think alcohol has a negative net
    effect, when unmediated by a sense of restraint.  Anyway I'm gonna ask
    'em nice next time.  (And if that fails I'll fume and stew! And vent in
    notes! Yeah, that's the ticket!) Seriously, maybe some of these folks
    would appreciate being clued in.  I'll be doing 'em a favor. Right ;-)

    As for Dead vs. Phish I feel there is no comparison.  

    But I do like the Phish scene, it's youthful and exuberant and there
    are definitely some hip kids who "get it".  At this point in my life
    that includes being treated as an equal when I am obviously over 30 and
    not to be trusted.

    Neh, hackysacks are too soft, paint guns hurt, man (ok
    ruthless me, settle down).  Well, actually the I get
    annoyed many times at shows, but overall I feel very
    young and refreshed when I go see Phish.  For every
    jerk off I see, I always seem to run into some very
    cool individuals who I end up talking to for awhile.
    Same thing happened at Dead shows too, and the great
    thing about Dead shows was I met/talked to mostly older
    folks then myself....know I'm one of the older ones
    at Phish....not that old.....yet...heheheheh

I'm with JC on this one. The first night at Sugarbush last year I was 3/4 
of the way up the mountain. Some slackjawed troglodytes decided to hop the 
fence sit near me. One of the guys starts yelling, "Wilson" at the top of 
his lungs. I thought he'd stop but when he didn't I finally turned to him 
and asked him to stop yelling. He answered that he could do whatever he 
wanted and to F&*k off. I told him that the crowd was there to hear Phish 
and not him and that, even if they did play Wilson, he wouldn't be able to 
hear it over his own yelling. Light dawns over Marblehead after one of his 
buddy's tells him to cool it so he looks and me and eloquently say, "yeah, 
whatever".

All scenes have those who seem to have the few who ruin it for others (the 
fence crashers at Highgate and Deer Creek last year and the idiots who 
trashed the port-o-lets at Foxboro a few years back w/ the Dead, the clowns 
who would urinate in the stands at Patriot games (fortunately that "fad" 
seems to have died), the "if I only had a brian" mosh pit of 5 idiots next 
to me at Buffett last year (figure that one), etc. I think it's up to those 
attending, as the boyz said in their post Deer Creek note, to police the 
scene(s) or lose them.

    The guy at TM said he hadn't had many calls yet today for
    Phish.  Tix should be available for a while.  Don't think
    it'll be that big of a scene (hopefully).

    That's actually a good sign.  It would be great if 
    Plattsburgh AFB held like 50,000+ and about 20,000-
    30,000 showed up.  I figure that may some of those
    f&$(#@ing jerks that we've been talking about won't
    be there, I mean this place is out in the middle of
    nowhere.  Obvious there will be a few there, but
    hopefully enough cool folks to offset a little.

    Anyway, Gamehenge really is called "The Man Who Stepped Into
    Yesterday", and was Trey's senior thesis at Goddard college.
    It is a fictional fairytale, almost like a children's story,
    about a land called Gamehenge and about a race of people
    (called the Lizards) who live in this land, and the events
    that unfold about them. The structure is that of a narrative 
    story encompassing songs to go with it.  They have only performed
    it live 5 times in Phishtory, the last time at Great Woods
    on 7/8/94, Set I [also of which the second set was just as
    mindblowing with the Stash that's on "A Live One", and
    a ridculously sick YEM -> Frankenstein (an Edgar Winter Group
    cover for those not in the know) -> YEM.], I was at this 
    show, one of the best shows I've ever been too. Anyway, the
    setlist for a "Gamehenge set" usually follows this structure:
    
     -> Lizards -> Tela -> Wilson -> AC/DC Bag -> Col. Forbin's
    Ascent -> Famous Mockingbird -> McGrupp & The Watchful
    Horsemen -> *Possum
    
    The segue ->'s in this case, mean the story narration in
    between the songs.  The * implies that this last song can
    vary, e.g. at Great Woods it was Divided Sky (a fine version
    I might add).
    
    There are other songs the compromise the Gamehenge tale, though
    they are out of order with those above: which are, Llama, 
    Punch You In the Eye, and a few more which I can't remember.
    
    A Gamehenge set at Plattsburgh????  I think if there was ever
    a show(s) that it could predictable happen, it would be
    the Clifford Ball.  That would only be 1 set, and we've
    got 5 other sets to figure out what the heck there going
    to play (my excitement for this show is beyond typing it
    into words, if that isn't obvious already).

    Sounds good.  I like most of those songs in the set and have seen em
    all live at one point or another.  I really like the jamming part of
    Lizards.  Divided Sky will definitely be played at Plattsburg.  That

my prediction is that Clifford Ball will be oversold and
a logistical nightmare.  expect 50k +, probably closer to 65k.
it was announced faaaaaaaaaaarrr in advance, so people have plenty
of time to plan,plan,plan.  recall highgate?  the first highgate was
mellow, maybe 50-60k people.  announced *during* summer tour.  the
following year, highgate was announced w/ the tour.  100k show up.
major nightmare.

I recently picked up a phlyer at the Flynn Box office with info regarding 
Plattsburgh.  The following is general stuff that might be of interest to 
evone:

ON-SITE CAMPING INFO:  Potable water and toilets will be provided for campers.
There will be concessions selling breakfast, lunch, and late night fare. (else-
where in the flyer this food is referred to as 
"tasty and low-priced")  No open fires allowed.  There will be a commissary in 
the camping area selling sundries.

SHOW INFO:  Parking lots open 11am, Please don't come earlier because you will
be turned away.  Festival grounds open 12noon, there will be a lot of great 
diversions and maybe a few suprises, so we encourage you to come into the
festival as early as possible [band vs. audience Super Mario Bros. maybe? :)]

A FEW WORDS OF WISDOM:  1 Respect the environment-please carpool as much as 
possible!  If you are staying at local hotels, please carpool to concert area
whenever possible.  2 Do not bring alchohol, illegal drugs, open containers,
glass, cans, coolers, fireworks, or weapons to the Plattsburgh Air Force Base.
Absolutely no pets permitted on the grounds-please leave them at home.  Rabies 
is endemic to this area!  Factory sealed or empty plastic water containers may
be brought in.  Backpacks will not be permitted beyond the camping area (eh?!)
3 Please be careful not to park illegaly anywhere in the area. Violators will 
be
towed.  4 Camping in designated areas only.  5 Weather can be extremely hot &
humid during the day, and occasionally cold at night-bring appropriate 
clothing.
[word has it that there is no shade to speak of in the area, so bring hats, 
umbrellas, etc.]

And a couple notes we've all heard before that it doesn't hurt to repeat,
for Clifford Ball as well as all other Phish shows:

| -Please help us discourage people from coming to the parking lot of a 
sold-out
show without tickets.   Parking is often limited, and legitimate ticket holders
may not be allowed access to the lots if they are patially filled by non-ticket
holders.  Also, people coming without tickets increases the cost of security
staffing, which ultimately leads to higher ticket prices.

| -Remember, if you purchase nitrous oxide you are likely to be supporting 
people
who care nothing abou, and contribute nothing to, the Phish community.

last Thursday and Friday about the Clifford Ball. 
 
In general, I thought the articles put a fairly positive, 
optimistic spin on the whole event, looking at it as an economic

be feared.  This is good, as it was in nearby Lake Placid last 
December where positive advance press (IMHO) contributed to a 
very friendly atmosphere with the townspeople for the 12-16/17-95

"A FINE KETTLE OF PHISH: NEARLY 200,000 
EXPECTED FOR BASE CONCERT SERIES"

PLATTSBURGH - You can't stop Phish fans from showing up en masse 
to a concert here later this summer, you can only hope to contain 
them. 
 
Clinton County officials were thinking of that popular phrase 
from ESPN sportscaster Dan Patrick when they were told Wednesday 
crowds for the Aug. 15-18 Phish event at Plattsburgh Air Force 
Base will number about 95,000 people each day. 
 
The estimate far exceeds original crowd totals of 25,000 for each 
show. 
 
Clinton County Health Department Director John Andrus told county 
legislators Wednesday 40,000 concert tickets have already been 
sold, and promoters are expecting more sales. 
 
"That's (crowd estimate) double the size of Clinton County", 
Andrus said. 
 
The Health Department has already spent between $7,000 and 
$10,000 in issuing permits for the event, and figures continue to 
grow because promoters must follow the stringent guidelines of 
New York's Mass Gatherings law. 
 
The law was designed in the wake of Woodstock II and other large 
concerts held in the state over the years. 
 
Andrus told legislators they should consider negotiating with the 
promoters - Great Northern Productions Inc. - to pay permit 
costs. 
 
"We shouldn't go overboard with this because we might discourage 
them (promoters), but we should at least recoup our costs", 
Legislator Joseph Giroux said. 
 
Andrus said Great Northern has assured them they can handle such 
a large crowd.  If it looks like plans for operating the show are 
not safe, the county can get an injunction to stop the concert, 
he said. 
 
The major concerns are traffic control, security and first aid.  
The promoters plan on bringing in 500 officers and 32 horses from 
the Texas Mounted Patrol for security, Andrus said. 
 
The massive crowd will also produce about 225 tons of garbage 
over the weekend. 
 
"The Mass Gatherings code is pretty comprehensive, and we will 
hold the promoters to the letter of the law", Andrus said. 
 
Officials from Great Northern could not be reached for comment 
Wednesday evening. 
 
Andrus said the promoters have been cooperative so far and have 
said they can handle the operation.  They are a little behind 
because they originally thought they would not have to adhere to 
New York codes because the site still belongs to the Air Force, 
Andrus said. 
 
A meeting is scheduled for Friday to go over details on the 
logistics of the upcoming show.

"CONCERT SEEN AS WAY TO SELL AREA"

PLATTSBURGH - County and Air Base reuse officials will meet today 
to hammer out further details of Phish's August concert. 
 
The morning meeting is expected to address the state and Clinton 
County sanitary code, the state Mass Gatherings Law and other 
logistical issues for the Aug. 16 and 17 concert. 
 
The concert could draw up to 50,000 people per day to the event 
at the former Plattsburgh Air Force base, according to some 
estimates.  Others expect far more people to flock to the two day 
show. 
 
A MARKETING BOOST 
 
Meanwhile, city business owners and others are preparing for what 
could be a bonanza for everyone involved. 
 
Anyone doubting that possibility only need look across the lake 
to Franklin County, Vt.  Two summers of Grateful Dead concerts in 
that region left long-term economic benefits, officials there 
said. 
 
Calling the Phish concert a "great marketing tool", Plattsburgh 
City Mayor Clyde Rabideau said the concert will "put Plattsburgh 
on the map for people across the country." 
 
"I don't want to downplay the inconvenience that may and probably 
will arise, but the city and town must offer warmth and 
hospitality," Rabideau said.  "The payoff will be big." 
 
PEOPLE URGED TO WELCOME SHOW 
 
Scott Tetreault, co-owner of Zachary's Pizza and Bogart's pub in 
downtown Plattsburgh, agreed. 
 
"We feel lucky that this is coming there," said Tetreault, who 
will be operating a concession stand at the show. 
 
He hopes residents will welcome the event and the expected 
economic benefits merchants could see. 
 
"It could help the economy or replace Canadian tourism", he said. 
 
"We think the base could have an event like this every year, or 
two a year". 
 
WORKING OUT SAFETY ISSUES 
 
Adequate police coverage is one of the many concerns officials 
are working to address before the concerts. 
 
State Police Capt. Michael Klusacek said that effort is underway. 
 
"We're at the very early stages of planning and putting together 
our operations and conferring with people and deciding what we 
are doing", he said from State Police's Plattsburgh barracks. 
 
His department has already met with the Clinton County Sheriff's 
Department and Plattsburgh City Police and will do so again, he 
said. 
 
Klusacek said that a multi-agency cooperative effort will help 
make sure "the public will have the least inconvenience and the 
most safety and hospitality to visitors". 
 
City Police Capt. Matthew Booth said some discussions have taken 
place with concert promoters about compensation for police 
overtime during the show, but there is "nothing concrete yet". 
 
International TradePARC Chief Executive Officer Mark Barie said 
there is plenty of time to address logistical concerns for the 
Phish concert. 
 
"And personally, I have a 15 year old who will shoot me if we 
don't host the show". 
 
GREEN IN VERMONT 
 
The Grateful Dead performed in Highgate, Vt. In 1994 and 1995, 
bringing nearly 80,000 people the first summer and about 100,000 
people for their return engagement.  A similar situation could 
happen when Phish comes to town. 
 
The Dead more than doubled the population of Franklin County, Vt. 
during each show.  Fans crammed campgrounds and local highways, 
but also brought economic benefits to local businesses.   
 
Sue Rixon is executive director of the St. Albans Area Chamber of 
Commerce, which covers most of Franklin County.  She said the 
Dead gave Franklin County some good long-term economic bonuses. 
 
"People are coming back who came to the concert(s), to enjoy 
Franklin County", she said. 
 
And during the shows, convenience-store owners and other 
businesses reaped thousands of dollars of economic benefits. 
 
Rixon said Clinton County should look at Phish with much of the 
same potential. 
 
"They should be excited and look at this as a potential, huge 
industry", she said.  "It's potentially a fabulous industry for 
the old army base". 
 
"Look at them with dollar signs". 
 
 
(N.B.  -  There was also a sidebar article entitled "PHISH FANS 
CAUGHT IN THE NET" which discusses the r.m.p newsgroup with the 
lead "Phish fans not only love their band, they love to talk 
about it on the Internet.  The Phish Internet newsgroup contained 
more than 4,000 messages Friday, with concerns about everything 
from security to free water at the Plattsburgh concerts Aug. 16 
and 17, which the fans are calling Clifford Ball".   A number of 
comments posted to the newsgroup about water, food, traffic, 
followed, and listed contributors included Nick Fitanides, James 
Douglas, Jesse H. Alderman, Brad Zebol, "a fan known only as 
Possum23", Nada Hall and "Phish coordinator Shelly Culbertson", 
who noted that the concert times on the tickets were incorrect.  
Correct times are 8-16 - camping/lots, 11 am, doors 1 pm, show 
6:30; 8-17 - lots, 11am; doors, 1 p.m. and show, 3:30 pm.  The 
"net" sidebar story also mentioned that "Phish fans sometimes 
discuss drugs on the Net, usually as "420", the California 
Highway Patrol radio code for drug use" as well as discussing 
concert taping and that tapes "are traded constantly on the 
Internet". 
 
There was also a sidebar box with a seemingly complete 
discography, Doniac Schvice address ("has some 85,000 
subscribers"), hotline number and the URLs for the Netscape www 
site (archive.phish.net) and rec.music.phish newsgroup.  - JL)

i got some NY gazeteer maps... have all the maps of the area.
may go up this coming w-end for a scouting expidition...

phish used to cover dead tunes in the old days (84,85) and did an okay job
of it ... i have a few tapes with them covering dead tunes (scarlet, fire,
eyes) and they do a fine job ... but overall, IMO, phish covers are
generally disappointing ...

good times bad times, fire (hendrix), whipping post, among others, are tunes
that they've covered which just don't do justice to the originals ...

we went on a mini road trip a few years back and saw phish stick pink
floyd's "great gig in the sky" in the middle of "mike's song" and "weekapaug
groove" instead of the standard "i am hydrogen" and i could've cut diamonds
with my nipples when page started in on the keys ... it's still one of my
favorite moments from the twenty or so phish shows i've been to ... i later
got a copy of this tape, and upon listening to it, found that fish sorta
hacked the vocals a bit, but it turned out to be a fine cover, and always
reminds me of that moment in time when the philly crowd discovered that
phish was covering pink floyd ... 

one other nice cover that comes to mind is zappa's "peaches en regalia" ...
they've played this quite a bit and they do a fine job

dave matthews played "eyes" last year after jerry left and i was really
looking forward to hearing it ... when we finally did get a copy, i was a
bit disappointed ... dave is generally a rythym guitarist and couldn't
generate the sweet jerry licks in the middle of the song ... it's nice to
hear how psyched the crowd gets when they do realize that dave is giving
his dedication to "someone who jammed for so long" ... though i do enjoy
the feb 94 version of watchtower, when trey and popper came out to jam
with dmb ... very nice !

if phish does decide to cover dead tunes, let's hope trey can do justice to
jerry's style ... a long sweet spacy segue, like he escapes on in tunes
like "harry" or "slave" ...

    Adirondacks, my response was "hiking in New York???? NO F&*^$ WAY!!!!
    But, I've heard recently that they may be the most uncrowded 4ker's in
    the northeast....go figuure!

    By all means go! The 46 4kers there are as nice as any in the Whites,
    and they are not as crowded. I went a couple of summers ago and there
    were a couple of days where I saw *no one* in the high peaks. It was
    too weird and true to believe, but was *wonderful*. 
    
    Stay away from Marcy, which is the exception to the rule. If you have
    time after the Phish show, there are day hikes to Algonquin, Colden,
    Porter, or Giant (and others but these are off the top of my head) that
    will give you a good indication of what the ADKs are like.
    
    Having hiked both the Whites and the ADKs I still have a fondness for
    the ADKs as I grew up there.
    
    I have the ADK trail guide if you want pointers to some trails for 
    another time.

Don't have specific plans yet, but it looks like we'll find a cozy place to
camp and hike in the high peaks region (someplace not too crowded)

Our first time in the ADK's !  We've hiked Mansield, Katahdin, Lafayette
Washington, Grand Canyon, etc, and it's always fun to find new peaks !

Not sure how much energy we'll have left in the old legs after dancin at
horde and clifford ball ... where there's a will there's a way !

    Sounds good.  I had this image of New York City hordes leaving on a 
    Friday night and heading for the mountains....too far for them I guess.  
    The commuter vacationland for NYC must be the Catskills.  I did have a 
    girlfriend that (appropriately) lived in a town called "Spectacle" which 
    was real nice.  Thats as far as I got out there.

No further for them, than for you!  But, yeah, beautiful area, and not
all that crowded, though I haven't really made any effort going after
4k's myself.  But, having gone to school in Albany, they had a camp
run by the student council up in the Adirondacks that we still go to 
to get together with the bozo's every few years.  Hmmm, maybe I should
see if anyone is interested in going sometime in the near future...

    Clifford Ball review...the event of the century if you ask me...
    
    Me, Leblanc, afb, and Dave B. arrived at 1:00AM Friday morning to tent 
    city USA and setup about 1/4 mile from the car.  We were totally annoyed 
    all night by the generator_from_hell(tm) so, under sunny skies on Friday 
    AM we easily moved to the quiet hilltop location where Rich Fromm & friend,
    JC, Deb, John Watt and wife were camped out.   We could see the stage from
    the sight...it was a perfect sight with a view and not nearly as crowded as 
    Picard camground with a tent every six inches.
    
    The whole thing was extremely well organized.  There were 2 areas with
    about 50 sinks in each area.  Porta poty's around every corner, no
    lines.  There were these huge 25' cutouts of Clifford Ball himself 
    pointing you towards the showgrounds.  You could come and go in and out
    of the show as needed due to the well thought out wristband policy. This 
    policy was extremely convenient...between sets I could to the campsite, 
    sit on my ass and drink beers til the band came back on, then go back in.
    Various planes flew over all day displaying odd messages like "Running
    low on fuel...not kidding!!" or "Hopeless has exceptions" or "Landing
    gear is stuck".  The Thunderbirds, a stealth fighter, an ultralight and 
    a stunt plane provided quite an airshow all day.  We listened to
    Clifford Ball radio to stay abreast of events.
    
    Inside the concert area was a small hilltop village with candle makers, 
    glass blowing, arts, crafts, flatbread being cooked in a hand made beehive
    fireplace, a miniature village with a church, town hall, store, and a
    barber shop where Rich Fromm could easily be found. ;-)  There were
    beertents selling Otter Creek, Thai restaraunt, falafel, Subway, burgers, 
    dogs and the famous "Air Sausage" tent.  You could get whatever you
    wanted.  Just outside of Clifford Square there were several carnival
    attractions set up including the famous giraffe moonwalk.  Twas a riot
    watching all the Phishheads bouncing around in the moonwalk.
    
    The first set the first night was so intense.  Almost everything I wanted 
    to hear was played.  Divided sky while the sun set was intense. I left 
    half way through the 3rd set and enjoyed the clear sound and the massive 
    fireworks display, from the campsite.  It was an incredible sight as I
    drank my beer and cooked burgers.
    
    Second day, things were getting more intense.  Went inside for Phish as
    they did a raging 3:30 set and then the Clifford Ball orchestra played a
    set so we went back to the campsite and listened to it on Clifford Ball
    radio.  Things got even more intense so we scambled in around 8:00PM
    for Phish to come out and do the 2nd and 3rd sets.  Met Rich Fromm in
    the barber shop, then lost everyone so I moved forward0 and was able enjoy
    the 3rd set from right next to the soundboard.  They played Harpua and
    eneded to show quick to accomodate for the stunt pilot flying over
    shooting sparks out from the wings of the plane...utterly intense. 
    What a show!!!  
    
    The only major problem was getting out Sunday morning.  Waited 2 hours
    in horrid, unorganized traffic to leave out of one little exit.  Not
    good.
      
    Going back next year?????  You'd better believe it!!!!!!!!!

    point there was a skier and a snowboarder bouncing around doing

yeah, really.
so much to see/do, they really did go all out and put on one hell
of an event.  they kept things moving right along the whole time.  water
trucks kept filling the water tanks, the "kukka sucka" kept coming to
drain/clean the portos, etc.  and, everyone was very cool and easy
going.  i did not see or encounter a single "hard ass" security
person.  everyone was nice....  what a change!

work, and the basis of some computer courses that would lead me here to

Where the hell is that, exactly?  Some of my earliest memories, probably from
when I was 2 to 3, was a family trip to "Indian Lake".  Just a few images
remain, a cottage by the lake, a platform my older brothers could swim
out to and jump/dive off, a boat ride to an island/beach where we had a 
cookout in the sand, and me crawling around in the sand thinking that
the ability to think was pretty cool (not framed in those exact words
of course, it was the late 50's after all ;-)  I used that image of 
thinking great thoughts while crawling in the sand as the basis of
my college essay when applying for schools way back when.  Don't 
remember that it helped me though!

BML is pretty much dead-center in the Adirondak Preserve.
My parents (and I, when I was younger) have been going a place in BML for
about 20-25 years.  (I'm heading there this Sunday.)

      The whole concept of the wristbands and coming and going whenever
    you pleased is wonderful as was the way the Phish people thought and
    took care of just about everything......also they had this bunch of
    people called the green crew.  They were in charge of keeping the place
    relatively clean.  Sure there were bottles and broken glass around,
    but nowhere near the amounts I remember from infront of highgate last
    year.....I like phish music....you can dance to it.....I'm not about
    to become a phishhead....but.....this was truely a real good time...
    The whole weekend was just what I was missing.....traveling to a cool
    place....with good friends...to camp out with more good people...to
    party and groove on some good tunes....only two negatives from
    experience come to mind....1) never sleep next to a gas-powered
    generator, its like trying to sleep in your garage with the lawn-mower
    running...and...2) it took us almost 3 hours to get from the campsite
    to the road so we could go home......however....count me in for
    next year!!!!   Thanks to AFB, Leblanc, Deano, JC, Deb, John and his
    Deb, Rich F. and all the others for helping phish show me a good
    time!!!

	when i first saw phish, i too was a little bored at the extended
jams.  where were they going?  to me, a lot of it was noise at first.  but,
i perservered (sp?).  i got some tapes and listened to them.  got to know
the music.  phish thrives on building tension and they take their time doing
it vs. the dead.  the dead do a similar program: build tension, then release.
for example, pretent you NEVER have heard Terrapin in your life.  ok, you
are now at a dead show and Terrapin is playing.  they're jamming, working
up to the "Inspiration..." release.  the crowd is getting nutty, and finally,
they release... jerry whales "Inspiration..." the best he can and BOOM!
tension release.  the crowd goes nuts.  the first time through, you won't
be able to really take part in the tension-release cycle because you did not
know what to expect.  but, next time you do.  it is the same with phish.
there are still plenty of songs i do not know cold, ie: do not know all
of the tension-release cycles/points of the song.  but, the more you learn,
the more you can enjoy... the more you can rise with the tension, and
finally they hit you hahd with the release.  this is what it is all about
for me... this is the root of the way the music moves me.  and, jerry and
the boyz practised this all the time.  sometimes they'd deliver intensely,
other times it was weak...  

    
    Yeah.  Very good description.
    
    Divided sky is the ultimate tension release (well...besides sex I
    guess).

niiice weekend !

horde fest @ great woods thursday night -> plattsburgh fryday morn

arrived in plattsburgh fryday with Dave T & co and set up camp ... 
emotions running high !  the show fryday just blew our minds ! 

the first set i will never forget - excellent song selection, great
crowd, a chance to do fun things we've never done in a phish show  :)

a little bummed i didn't get a chance to meet up with fellow DECheads
after the first set ... we headed out to our camp for some nekid dancing
and intermission delight !  :)

the wrist-band "come and go as you please" thing was incredibly convenient

saturday was a bit more laid back ... the orchestra really soothed the
crowd ... a good opportunity to visit the clifford town atop the hill 

we were a bit confused at the end of the "harpua" encore saturday ...
harpua usually has a story about jimmy in the middle, different every
time, and this one seemed to have good potential ... trey started the
story with jimmy's dream that he could fly, while a plane circled overhead
and sprayed fireworks-type of sparks off its wing tips ... really nice,
but the band just cut the song short ... maybe we were expecting some
sort of inspirational message from the band ... the band disappeared
and the plane vanished into the midnight sky ... pretty weird

leaving sunday was like squeezing a watermelon through a garden hose  :(
we made the best of it ... we had a make-shift shower in my truck and we
provided free spray-downs to help cool pholk's temporaments (sp?) ...
cool way to help spread good vibes  :)

off to the adirondacks !  we hiked mount marcy on monday (elev 5344'),
and it was surprisingly not crowded ... 18-mile hike in eleven hours ...
and some beautiful weather to enjoy some fine views  :)  

we wrapped up our clifford ball weekend in vermont ... gravy fries at
nectars in burlington, followed by skinny dipping in the white river :)

all in all, one weekend we'll not soon forget ! :)

need we say, "see you at the ball next year !"  ?

"possum", antelope", "jump monk", "reba", "runaway jim", "golgi", "ice",
"divided sky", "mike's -> groove", "kung" are not usually part of the
gamehendge saga ... phish is working on an interactive CD to be released
late next year which will take us to gamehendge  :)

quality of my gamehendge tapes :  trey's thesis i would rate as a bit
rough, but it's definitely worth checking out ... tough to find a great
quality of this version ... the live versions are fine, and i'd say the
great woods version is the lowest quality live version since it's an
AUDience master ... the best one sound wise is probably the 6-26-94

      MTV news says the attendance at the Ball was only 70K.....but
    it was the biggest concert event in N. America so far this year...

I picked up the sunday paper in plattsburgh, which had a decent review of
the fryday show ... it said that 75,000 attended the show ... i assume this
means they handed out 75,000 wristbands ... there were many wandering
around without wristbands ... could have been 100,000 in attendance total

when we arrived fryday around noon the gentleman handing out the wristbands
told us there were 300,000+ in the camping area already ... maybe he was
hanging around those nitrous tanks a wee bit too long 

not sure who made more money ... the guys selling thousands of nitrous
balloons at $5 a piece or the guys selling 30 lb. bags of ice for $15  :(

We picked up the sunday, august 18 "Press-Republican" newspaper after we
left Plattsburgh, and read some interesting stuff about the festival :

1) stealth gig ?

   "Phish hopped on a flatbed truck and headed straight for a crowd of fans
and overnight campers about 3:15 A.M. Saturday, perfroming for at least an
hour".

   Anybody see this stealth gig ?  we were crashed in our tents, i haven't
heard anybody say anything about it ... just figured i'd ask


2) i now declare you phan and wife

   a lengthy story about the couple who got married in Clifford Ball square
(too long for my lazy butt to type in here)


3) the wanderer

   "Amanda Howard, a 25-year old Phish fan from WestChester, PA, found a
21-month-old male child wandering near the main box office area about 9:00
A.M. Saturday. The fan immediately took the child, Sequoia Pilapil, to State
Police. Troopers there gave him a teddy bear and picked up some juice and
spare diapers. They also put out an alert throughout the area and on Phish
radio. The mother, Iryna Proctor of Wellesley, MA, walked up to police an
hour later, reporting her son missing".

    I saw em, I and heard em, but had absolutely no idea it was really 
    Phish.  I remember being amazed at how the band on the truck was
    getting it's power.

    read about the flatbed gig in a few different places....also about the
    new bumpersticker that the phishtourheads have out that is sorta
    against the "trustfund-take a bath" phishheads...Clean People Suck..
    also read some tirades on the Phish Phan webpage by "the clean people"
    really putting down the tourheads...tour scum was the word most often
