526.0. "the Further Festival 1996" by SALEM::FEDELE () Mon Apr 22 1996 19:27

There some info on the Net about the Future Festival with Ratdog,
Mystery Box, Bruce Hornsby, Los Lobos, and the Flying Karamzov Bros.
So far there's only Atlanta and Charolette listed.

There was also a question in the Sunday USA magazine section of my
newspaper where someone asked the question if the former DEAD will be
touring. The answer was that the band has broken up into several bands
but is making a 30 city tour in six weeks.

With all that, has anyone heard of a tour schedule for this event and
specifically has anyone heard Boston mentioned?

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ON THE ROAD AGAIN April 23, 1996

The Spirit endures, and so does music. Musicians must play, and Dead
Heads must dance. It's time to move on -- and hit the road.

The Grateful Dead Family and Metropolitan Entertainment take great
pleasure in announcing our summer '96 tour: "The Furthur Festival," with
band members Bob Weir (Ratdog with Rob Wasserman, Matthew Kelly, Jay Lane,
and the legendary Johnnie Johnson), Mickey Hart (Mickey Hart's Mystery Box),
unofficial band member Bruce Hornsby, and old friends Los Lobos and Hot
    Tuna.

With the Flying Karamazov Brothers and acoustic musicians between acts
and an all-out Vendor's Faire on the concourse, the guys are ready to do
what they do best -- spread joy across America. The tour will run from
June 20 to August 4, hitting 31 amphitheatres across the country.

The whole is even greater than the sum of its parts, and this is quite
a whole; together we expect the special magical synergy that has taken
all of us down thirty years of so many, many roads.
The spirit doesn't just endure; it can triumph.

to 16 tickets and 78 cents for over 16 tickets. Also include a 3 x 5 index
card with your name, address, area code and phone number in the upper left
hand corner. List how many tickets and which concerts you want.

There will be an audio taping section at these concerts. It will be located
on the lawn in a roped off area. It will be very limited so please write
taper on your order if you are interested in taping. Taping is for
non-commercial home use only. All performances are the property of the
performing artist and The Further Festival, Inc.

We cannot be responsible for tickets lost, stolen or delivered late by the
post office. For this reason we strongly suggest that you have your order
sent back by registered mail. Please not that due to postal increases the
registration fee for this service has increased to $6.75. This includes a
charge to us for this service. Add the registered fee to your money order,
do not put extra stamps on your return envelope.

Your payment must be a postal money order or an American Express Money
Order only. No other payment will be accepted. No cash and
no personal checks. Make check payable to:
GDTS TOO-Further Festival.

Keep your receipt. If your order is not filled your payment will be
returned to you. Remember, orders will be filled on a first come, first
served basis by postmark not by when we receive them. We WILL accept
express mail, BUT NOT Federal Express, DHL, ect. And absolutely no metered
mail of any kind. This includes metered strips of any kind, so if you go to
the post office and give them money for postage make sure that they put on
actual stamps and not a metered strip. Make sure that your full name and
address are on the outside of your order to us, your return envelope and on
your payment. Also, make sure that your full name and address are on the
outside of your order to us, your return envelope and on your payment.
Also, make sure that your address is correct or your won't get your
tickets.

Reserved seats for these concerts are limited. If you want to make sure
that you get tickets regardless of whether they are reserved or lawn, then
enclose two money orders. One for the lawn price, in case that's all we
have left, and another money order for the difference between lawn and
reserved prices. The difference is as follows:

Bristol - $5.00 per ticket
Noblesville- $3.00 per ticket
Alpine - $7.50 per ticket
The World - $7.50 per ticket
Blossom - $7.00 per ticket
Adrian Lake - $5.50 per ticket
The Meadows - $7.00 per ticket
Camden - $7.50 per ticket
Polaris - $3.00 per ticket

Multiply the above amount by the number of tickets you are ordering. If we
have reserved tickets left we would us both money orders and if we only
have lawn tickets left we would use just your money order for lawn tickets
and return the other money order. If you are having your tickets sent back
by registered mail, add the $6.75 fee to the money order for lawn tickets.

The only address to send to is:

Just sent my mail order out for Darien Lake and boy did that feel
strange!! Never thought I'd be going through those motions again. The
guy at the PO looked at me funny when I asked him for money orders. He
says, "You're kidding right?" So I explained the whole thing to him and
he just kinda laughed and set me up like in the old days. Weirdest part

Darien Lake is just outside of Rochester, New York - about 80 miles
west of Syracuse or 120 miles east of Buffalo. It's really a large
theme park (rollercoasters and ferris wheels, etc) and camping area but
it does have a small (~7500 capacity) ampitheteatre there too.

Quite frankly I'm surprised that's one of the stops! Will definitely
fill up fast! At least there's camping right on site - park the vehicle
at the campsite and walk down the road to the show.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

The spirit endures, and so does music. Musicians must play, and Dead
Heads must dance. It's time to move on -- and hit the road. The
Grateful Dead family and Metropolitan Entertainment take great
pleasure in announcing our summer '96 tour: "The Furthur Festival,"
with band members Bob Weir (Ratdog with Rob Wasserman, Matthew
Kelly, Jay Land, and the legendary Johnnie Johnson), Mickey Hart
(Mickey Harts Mystery Box) unofficial member Bruce Hornsby, and old
friends Los Lobos and Hot Tuna. With The Flying Karamazov Brothers
and acoustic musicians between acts and an all-out Vendor's Faire on
the concourse, the guys are ready to do what they do best -- spread joy
across America. The tour will run from June 20 to
August 4, hitting 31 amphitheatres across the country.

The whole is even grater than the sum of its parts, and this is quite a
whole; together, we expect the special magical synergy that has taken
all of us down thirty years of so many, many roads.

The spirit doesn't just endure; it can triumph.

Put on your dancing shoes!

regarding the Vendors' Faire at the Furthur Festival...
someone who inquired as to getting a booth was informed
that the booths are $300 AND all 31 shows must be
committed to - so that's $9300 up front (plus traveling
expenses across country) to vend legitimately...

	hmmmmmmmmmm.

so, what this means to me is:

	- only someone/some company who has big bucks is going to
be vending - kinda closes out the little guys with the
beautiful handmade items, and kinda ensures that in order
to stock so many shows, the items are going to be of the
	mass-produced variety

	- the cost of the booth plus traveling expenses are going
to be added on to the cost of anything found in these
booths (that's a given, anyways, but we're talking big
bucks here - to me anyways ;-) )

	- there will still be parking lot vending - and probably
	a lot of it

	- there will probably be enforcement of no-vending, especially
since some others are paying big bucks for the privilege

	- I will not be patronizing at the official Vendors' Faire,
because I would figure I would be not getting any bargains,
not getting something made with love, not necessarily supporting
	another 'head.

anyone else have thoughts on this?

I have enough GDM type t-shirts...I'll be buying from the little
guys..screw the "No Vending" idea..I will always believe that the band
didn't really care but were convinced by the powers that be that
without vending, gigs would go smoother. plus i'll be buying some
"icy cold beers" from the guys with the coolers on skateboards.
If what you've heard is indeed true, i will most definitly not be

i dunno... mixed feelings i suppose...

from a band/org standpoint it makes sense...
from a "spirit of the event" standpoint it certainly
inhales...

it seems to have a "if you're big enough to keep
up you can play" attitude to it though... too bad...

i have enough $30 t-shirts...

I wouldn't doubt that Denver is putting a stop to Furthur at Fiddlers
Green..They have never welcomed the dead in the summer since they
stopped playing Red Rocks in 87 and have made it known they view
deadheads as trouble. and after hearing the horror stories about
Desert Sky in PHX, I'll never go to that nazi state for a show again.
According to many who were there and got caught up in the stings,
and unbeknownest to us, we barely got out alive.

Definitely go for the reserved seats. As /b said, they're very
roomy and the sight lines anywhere in the reserved area are
excellent. Shoreline also has (or at least had) the most courteous
security and vending staff I've encountered anywhere.

hook up with you for that gig, I'm sure. He used to live there almost
20 years ago, but has long since lost the necessary driving skills it
takes to survive a concerts' aftermath in New England. He flies in on

When Jerry Garcia died, I ended up with about $600 in tickets
for Boston Garden shows. In checking out the alternatives, I decided
to get a refund, get the tickets back, and then donate the $600 to my
    favorite charity - Easter Seals.

So, I wrote a note with my refund package, and explained my
plans, thanked GDTS for all the fun tickets, and well, sort of said
good bye to friend I didn't know. I mentioned why I was donating to
Easter Seals, and that I had been doing this for 10 years. For the new
deccies, I play volleyball once a year, in a marathon. I have been
doing this since my mother died, and I figure my teams have raised
     close to $30,000.

I got a note back, with my check, saying "You are one righteous
dude, Jim. Surely your mother is smiling at you from heaven. Love,
    Ruby"

So I mail ordered for Further tickets, at Great Woods. On my
3X5 card, on the back, I wrote "If you see Ruby, tell her hello, and
that my team rasied another $2000 this yeasr for Easter Seals".

I figured, what the heck...she might still be there, she might
be near by, she might remember....who knows.....

I got my tickets this morning, and a note saying "Ruby says
she's impressed, Jim! Way to go!".

            Kind of cool, eh?

Not a whole lot of news coming in about the stops on the Further Fest.
Tour. Seems like the line up for the major acts is Tuna->Los Lobos->
Hornsby->Mickey->Ratdog. The first 3 are getting ~45 minutes a piece
(that seems like a travesty of justice!) and Mickey's been playing for
~45 until Bobby and others ome out for Fire on the Mountain. Then
Ratdog for an hour or so and then the encore(s) with several memebers
of the different bands joining in. Here's a culmination from
rec.music.gdead put together by Jeff Lester:

I waded through the mess of rec.music.gdead/dead-flames (not an easy
task, there were several hundred extraneous reflected messages) to try and
weed out some setlists for the first couple stops of the Furthur tour. I
didn't come up with much, not even 100% accurate setlists for the Ratdog
sets. But here's what I have (none are claimed to be complete or even
correct). If you're going to a show, maybe try to keep some sort of setlist.

The order of the shows is:

Hot Tuna (promptly at stated starting time or even before)
** I heard 2 of the shows started 15-20 minutes earlier than what was

It's been years since I've been to SPAC, but it's your basic shed with a balcony
opening onto a sloping lawn area. The lawn area levels out and goes much further
back (whereas Great Woods for example, ends at a big fence) before you run into
any fences. I've never seen them partition the lawn into different sections
but there was enough room to do so. Would be a bit hard to control
though, I'd imagine.

With the exception that it holds about 3x more people than all the other
basic sheds.

I couldn't imagine how they could partition off the lawn.....but I haven't
been there either since 86 or whenever the last time the dead played there.....

Subject: Further / Walnut Creek show

Further Festival
Walnut Creek Amphitheatre
Raleigh, NC

Third stop on the tour. My wife and I got there in plenty of time, and had
reserved seats with a pretty good view. Sound system problems, with a large
hum from stage left usually between songs and sets.

Tuna hit the stage promptly at 4pm with only scattered attendance in the
seats and on the lawn. Fortunately, it did not in any way diminish the
intensity of the band!!! They were in great form, and it was great to see
the electric band.

Set list:

Walkin' Blues
Hesistation Blues
99 Year Blues
Hit Single #1 (Jorma pulls out red Gibson !!! for the rest)
??? -really good rocker with Mike Falzarano vocals!
Funky #7
Junkies On Angel Dust
Baby What You Want Me to Do

In a word - BLISTERING! Guitars and bass were getting excellent tone, but
again the sound guys were struggling with muddy vocals. Sears on keys was a
thrill, too :)

Ran into Mike Falzarano later and talked with him a couple of minutes.
Really nice guy - he said that Tuna probably wasn't going to open the whole
festival (i.e. move up in the lineup), that they were still working with it,
it was coming along, and they'd probably get longer playing time eventually.
And I forgot to ask what the damn song was I couldn't figure out!! Cell damage.

Things kept moving, but the Flying Karamazov guys could've shortened their
act toward the end...

Los Lobos did a great rendition of 'Bertha' and of course that got people
going. They had the worst of the sound problems, following John Wesley
Harding, but managed to work through it.

Bruce Hornsby really carried things, and what a great sound (with no guitars
in his band). Kinda wished Jorma could've come out to add a lick or two,
but it's early in the tour.

Mickey Hart's band was interesting, sometimes bordering on 'urban
contemporary.' But the drumming was great, as usual!

Ratdog closed the show - good, but I didn't feel like they had much
intensity. But hell, TUNA opened, right??? They did pretty well, though.
At the end, Jorma came out and the band launched into 'Truckin'' of all
things - needless to say, this raised my expectations a bit, but then it
didn't go anywhere! He hardly got to solo at all and left when the song was
over. Then, Casady came out and joined on bass for 'Knockin' On Heaven's
Door' -very lackluster overall, and not even the right chords.

By then, it was close to 11pm, and this amphitheatre has a strict noise rule
and they have to shut down then -which probably would explain why everything
was more tentative toward the end - if they'd really stretched out or did an
encore, the power would've been cut on them. It was a bit strange when Weir
just looked at the crowd and half-waved (like 'we'll be back if we can')
then left and the lights came up. They all looked like they could and would
have played another 2 hours if allowed, though.

You folks catching this into a few more shows will be the lucky ones -
they'll have things more together, jams will be more intense, and hopefully,
Tuna will be up the list with more than 45 minutes playing time!! They'll
be even harder to follow when that happens! :)

Yes, it's time for a Tuna tour!!!! They deserve well more than a mere 45
min. opener, for sure.

Hi Fredda,

Maybe the 12 (or was it 15) dollar seats are the ones just at the top when
the hill/lawn portion of SPAC starts to level off and you are far enough
back where you can't see anything but maybe the top of someones head....

Another difference from SPAC (old old shed) vs. all the new new sheds....

SPAC has trees in the lawn seating area and there were always people
up in the trees. Also, they always had speakers at the same top spot
on the lawn sort of like a stadium show....at 44K it's not that far
off.

Just heard a Grateful Dead Hour interview with Mickey Hart, done
shortly before the tour began. At that time anyway, the touring band
included Dave Garibaldi, original drummer for Tower of Power, and
bassist Baghiti Khumalo, who played on Paul Simon's "Graceland"
(including the memorable bass break in "You Can Call Me Al").
And of course, the Mint Juleps.

Mickey was also discussing what he would be playing on this tour.
It's something called RAMU, for Random Access Midi Universe. Sounds
like some sort of next generation synth, etc. controller that surrounds
the player, the "universe at your fingertips" as it were. He was hoping
he'd get to bang a few skins as well, but wasn't sure if that was going
    to happen.

my bones are walking happy today...less than 12 hours ago I
was in the midst of the sound safari known as Furthur...
and I am mightily pleased...mightily pleased.

with 4 hours sleep I'm not feeling too conversant, but
I will say that any of you who haven't caught this festival
yet, but will, you are in for a treat - hours and hours of
wonderful music - and the kind of music that will soothe
    your soul, I think.

I have no doubt now that the music I love to hear and
dance to, and the people I love to dance with, this really -is-
    going to continue...

highlights (that I can think of right now)
Los Lobos - the spaaaaaaaciest of the groups, they did Bertha
Hornsby did a very touching tribute which had Brokedown Palace in
it, but my brain won't let me remember what else, but it gave me chills
Hey - Warren Zevon was there!
Hot Tuna did an acoustic set, which was nice, since I missed their
electric set (got turned away ;-) at the gate, ran into MNelson, and
    we got "delayed" getting in)
Mystery Box was so excellent live - Great Groove! - Mickey had
mike problems during Down the Road Again, which was unfortunate
Bob joined him for Fire on the Mountain and Hornsby played accordian
    on Down the Road Again.
Weir played with Hornsby too - too much music, too much music! - I
can't remember what - was it Samson and Delilah?
Oh, the sets were Beautiful! - clouds and waves and pastel colors.
Very cool light show during Mickey's and Bob's sets
Ratdog played some new tunes - it was a bluesy set and it was a
Dead set too - lots of Dead tunes done Ratdoggety.
The definate highlight was Looks Like Rain with Weir and Hornsby -
Hornsby filled in Jerry's part very very nicely.
No tears - Jerry's spirit was there, the music was full
Little Wing with (is it) David Hidalgo(???) on lead - phew - this was
    sensuous
Knockin' on Heaven's Door into Not Fade Away was heartfelt and
    felt good.
7 hours of just continuous dancing - 3 hours driving - 4 hours sleep -
    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Debess,

glad you went and dug it. Does the CD sound better now that you have some
visuals to add to it?
The thing about the festival is that it's there to be enjoyed, not compared
and contrasted to other music at other times. You got that in spades. Enough
people seeing that is the only way it can continue.

they had wanted some younger bands for Furthur, but that they
started making arrangements too late and the bands they were

I don't think any of these shows are sold out - noone needs
to worry about getting a ticket...
but, the attitude...bring the right attitude!!!

the scene inside Hartford was so mellow and so happy - it
was just wonderful. the scene outside in the parking lot
was a bit weird - I got some, I don't know, angry vibrations
walking back to my car. Nitrous tanks hissing loudly.
The disco van, which I was forced to walk by, obnoxiously
intrusive. Lotta people swearing at eachother - and not
because it's the only way they know how to talk - it just
	seemed angry...

I'm going with an open mind, but I'm afraid that over the years, all
those times Jerry would forget a verse, drift away from the rest of
the band or just play real bad on some nights and real good on
others...it was all part of the deal, the phenomenon, the reason to go
back, and I've been spoiled by seeing so many f'in excellent Dead Shows
    (life sucks doesn't it! ;-).

Will Further offer that same diversity? Will it offer the peaks and
valleys? Will it be a saga as opposed to a novel? Will we feel
comfortable enough to dance our asses off as the music takes over as
    it did before?

I don't know. Luckily, there's always Phish. For some reason they
were able to get through my wall. As I grow older, seems the wall gets
thicker..I grow harder, luckily, I saw the Dead for the first time when
the wall was very thin...I was more open than I am now.

no it will offer a new and different diversity!
Diversity in the sense of some world music - between Los Lobos
	and Mystery Box...
Diversity in the sense of them mixing it up on stage - jumping
into eachother's acts and going for the edge that way...

> Will it offer the peaks and valleys?

So, meeting place...
deano was over tonight and we thought perhaps 2 meeting times:

1) pahking lot

lets say 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm at the lane split. what i mean by this is
there are 3 lanes of traffic heading into the parking area. initially,
all 3 lanes travel side-by-side; then, the right lane diverges right, and
the left 2 lanes diverge left. i'm thinking that where this diversion
occurs is a good, central place to try and meet on the hour,... it won't
be as crowded and hectic as trying to hook up near the entrance or near
the ticket window.... what do you think? need to lock&load on this asap!

2) inside grateshaft;

6 pm at the upper left beer tent. something like this (deano correct
me if i goof):

               lawn lawn lawn lawn

   XX
           sec 8 sec 7 sec 6 sec 5 sec 4

                  sec 3 sec 2 sec 1

                         STAGE

I think a better meeting place might be the yellow and white tent that they
have on the way from the left-hand lots (as you're entering the place) to
the turnstiles. At least there's some shade! This tent is along the
wooden fence they have around the back of the lawn to keep people from
hopping over and getting a free ride in! (I wonder if there will be any
gate crashing today :-))

BTW, JC, your map of GW needs to be flipped. Sections 3-2-1 as you list

I don't know about the tent...it gets very hectic up there. Seems that
the idea of checking, every hour, where the right hand lane separates

OOB, Grate time...wish I was at GW today. I wasnt sure what to expect
and now that I've got one under my belt and hopefully many more to
come, Im still not sure what to expect.

The "scene" was very cool. The vending was the best Ive seen in
awhile. Grate fun in the parking lot. Our party broke off on various
excursions and never reassembled til after the hail storm...

When the hail started, a few of us less sober types dove under a
clothed table setup...safe or so we thought, casually taking in the light
and hail show, we scoped these dupes who were huddled under an umbrella
with lighting touching off on all sides. Bunch of idiots right? Then we
look up and notice the table we were under was 100% alluminum...yikes...
    so much for stupidity.

Having missed Tuna and Los Lamos, the one nit for me was the lack of
guitars in the music. This may have been by design out of respect for
Jerry, ect. although Ratdog has always left me wishing Jerry would
somehow appear on stage and fill in all that empty space. so much for
    dreaming.

    Have fun...

well. thanks to JC fer sellin' me two last-minute tickets
yesterday! GRATE Woods was just GRATE!!
The partying was serene and cool and varied (Nitros balloons! YIKES!)
...maybe that's how I ended up in a cowfield at 2:30 this morning!
    DOUBLE-YIKES!!

Didn't get to meet & greet JC & all you other DECheads, let's
just say my pal and me were "distracted"...the ONLY negativity
was the amount of busts in the lot...man, we were right next to
this camper that had the heat all over them! Poor guys!
Sgt. Stedenko fer sure!! That really kinda got the paranoids
    flowing.....

but I digress....the show was superb! GRATE sound at GRATE Woods!
Los Lobos blew me away! Verrrry tight set, and as someone
mentioned earlier, a wonderful version of "Bertha" by Los Lobos!!

Missed Hot Tuna (unfortunately!) anyone catch their set??

Mystery Box was cool, but lacked enough musical input
from Mickey....seemed almost dwarfed by his group..other than
that nit-pick, a good time was had by all......

526.168SMURF::HAPGOODJava Java HEY!Thu Jul 11 1996 13:4042
Ok,

Took a 1/2 day vacation yesterday and got to GW around 2:15. Already a lot
of people there....

Left the lot at 3:40 to make it in on time for Hot F Tuna!!!!!
When we walked in there was a drum band with dancing ladies. Mildly suprised.
Not bad.

Hot Tuna played a nice 45 minute set.
Los Lobos blew me away with their cover of Bertha - EXCELLENT! That got the
crowd involved. Let me ask why 75% of the folks at last night's show wait
till the music is 1/2 over with to even bother coming into great woods. ??
The place was empty for Tuna and Los Lobos and didn't really start filling
until Hornsby came out....who played a nice set too.

Mystery Box was excellent - The Mickey prancing and dancing during
Down the Road like he was the other Mick (jagger). Excellent band with
lots of potential. Plenty of room for expansion (guitars ...)
oh yea, Fire on the mountain was nice too.

After this I was tired since I was up with Sam the night/morning before
so I was ready to book! But out popped what might've been the highlight
of the night - Acoustic TUNA!!!!!!!!!! EXCELLENT! Played a nice set.

Weir came out .... I only had one barf bag and used it up during
EEEEEEEEEETERRRRRRRRRRRRRNITYYYYYYYYYYYYY and left....Ya Minglewood
was cool and so wasn't the song after Eternity but after watching
RatDog you know why they say, "it ain't easy bein' cheesy" :) :) :)
Many apologies to RatDog fans...I like Bob's other solo efforts but
never did like the Weir/Wasserman thing....I left as I was hearing
Rob solo the Star Spangled Banner....if there were any huge jam sessions
with alot of people from all the bands, then I missed it and would have
liked to see that....but from my vantage point (the parking lot) there
were a lot of people who felt like I did (streaming out during Weir's set).

Saw and talked with JC, Josh, Deb, Jols, TomW and a bunch of folk...

Definately a good time....
bob

    What a weird show!

Parking lot scene was friendly and exciting (besides the cops).

Arrived during Los Lobos and wasn't too impressed with their
    performance.

Hornsby was very good and his band sounds full considering there aren't
    too many people on stage.

Mystery Box was raging. Totally trippy. Very rythmic. Better than
what I was expecting. I danced for the whole hour.

H.F.T. came back out (luckily, cause I missed them the first time) and
put out a short acoustic set that was very relaxing and very well
    played.

Seemed Ratdog was lacking in the fullness-of-sound department for the
majority of their set until Jourma, Hornsby and a few others joined in
    for a ripping Playin!!!!

Wow...a fire alarm in LKG...gotta go!

    Now getting back to Ratdog.

I think a lead guitarist is called for. Jourma actually seemed to play
lead very well foor that Playin and certainly is qualified.

So what ever happened to Vince?

526.173GW ReviewJARETH::BSEGALThu Jul 11 1996 14:2992
My own impressions of the GW show:

Hot Tuna was good. Did lots of familiar stuff. (Is it me or does Jack
look so thin as to be almost sickly?) He played great though, as did Jorma.
Did "Keep Your Lamps" deadicated to Jerry I believe.

J.W. Harding was pretty good. The highlight was his rendition of the
    Ramones' "I Wanna be Sedated."

Los Lobos was terrific. Mostly all footstomping stuff like Evangeline,
a Spanish tune, Kiko, etc. Hildago did the accordian thing too. They're
great. Only one tune maybe from the new more "experimental" CD.
    Bertha was excellent.

Alvin Youngblood Hart played traditional acoustic blues. Pretty good
but the crowd wasn't into it that much.

Hornsby was terrific. He's a likeable person and that comes across in
his shows. Highlights were some gospel bangin', "The way It Is",
Floyd's "Comfortably Numb", and "Goin Down the Road" with Bruce on
accordian. Took requests. Invited the crowd to dance onstage.
Calls for "Bruce! Bruce!" during the show. He's like the only other
person who can complement Weir musically with Jerry-like excursions into
the unknown. Know what I mean?

Flying Karamazov Brothers were fun. Couldn't always hear them through
the mikes both during the show and as they emceed the festivities.

Hart's band was terrific. If you like "world music", this is for you.
6 percussionists and 6 singers. Some of the tunes reminded me of
the group Sweet Honey in the Rock. Others were more soul-poppin'
dancing stuff. I thought they were terrific and would buy the CD.
I like the fact that it's not 100% percussion. The singers add a lot.
Mickey sang/talked his way through Fire on the Mountain and another
tune that spoke of Garcia. Was a nice touch.

Hot Tuna came back for a shorter acoustic set. Great to get them back
especially for people who might have missed them at 4.

Rat Dog was the least solid band in my opinion. Kelly is an average
harmonica player. Johnson was not allowed to extend himself that much
on piano and in fact had to fight to be heard over the harmonica. He
was greatly under-utilized. Wasserman, however, was terrific on bass.
He did a solo jam that included some touches of "The Eleven" followed
by a Hendrix-like national anthemn (all on those hi-tech square little
upright basses). The band wasn't that tight. Seemed kind of thin to
me. Same for the vocals. Not quite in synch. Weir did Blackbird, New
Minglewood Blues, Lovelights among Dead tunes.

Jam session included Hornsby and his band, Hot Tuna,Hart, and Weir doing
Playing in the Band into Dylan's "It takes a lot to laugh, it takes a
train to cry." Johnson came out for Johnny B. Goode. I think Weir was
much more in his element here. Was a satisfying conclusion to the show.

    Other notes:

The walk in almost became tragic in the parking lot when two black
puppies tethered to each other with a 10-foot leash were allowed to
run in front of traffic as they tried to follow their caretaker who
ran to get a ticket. I stood there helplessly about to witness two
squashings but miraculously the car missed both of them AND didn't
get tangled in the leash. A miracle that day indeed. My heart was
still thumping as I headed in.

I was manhandled by a 60-year-old lady last night for standing in a
seating area for which I had no ticket. It was the very end of the show
(the encore), but they didn't care. One of the downsides of GW.

Upside? Well it was nice that they had an area for a person to sign the
    music for the hearing-impaired.

Ok, this was an objective "music critic" review of the show. Sure, I had
fun and enjoyed most of the scene throughout. It was a beautiful sunny
    day too.

It gave me "closure" in the sense that I got a little taste of the Dead
one last time plus an introduction to something new (Hart's band) to
move on with. But I am moving on. I just don't know how successful any
kind of Dead reunion thing will work. Paying homage to the Dead as
Hornsby and Los Lobos do (where you don't *expect* a Dead-like
treatment) are great but Garcia's absence was painfully evident during
Dead tunes done by Weir and Hart.

Bot a signed Kesey novel and Dick's Picks 4 and 5 as well to round out
    the day.

    - Bob

526.177awesome day!NECSC::CRONIC::semi3.hlo.dec.com::notesi believe in Chemo-Girl!!!Thu Jul 11 1996 15:0299
ok... here's my take on the day...

sure i should be working, but... :^)

first, i had a ball... :^) i didn't realized how much i missed all this
until i got in there and starting digging the scene... i had NO problems
with GW staff at all all day... the only "problem" i saw was the usual
thing with the horde of staff fpeople taking away open beers inthe lot...
i thought everyone knew to use a cup there? live and learn... no busts,
just take it away, and 10 minutes later the cops were there to explain
that it was illegal to have an open container... they gave the "don't let
us see you do it ok? don't force us to do our jobs" attitude and all was
well again...

was amazed that they didn't hassle anyone for vending in the lots...
was amazed that no one wanted to check me going in... just show the
ticket and walk in! no aisle nazi treatment... no threats of expulsion
for smoking... it was all very cool, at least around me...

i missed the drummers/dancing ladies... but caught hot tuna... it's always
a treat to see them electric... yes, Jack is thinnner and he and Jorma
are both sporting real short hair cuts... looked healthy to me though...
once i was over the surprise of seeing them outside in daylight... :^)
Jorma was HOT, and they played well i thought...

John Wesley Harding was very good... i liked what he was doing but
not spectacular... got a kick out of the ramones cover... :^) and when
he spoke about his "summer job, playing between hot tuna and los lobos"
i had to admit to a twinge of jealousy... :^)

then Los Lobos... imho, the tightest band of the day!! man, they rocked...
these guys can all play and they had the crowd going... reminded me why i
enjoyed them so much in the past... hot stuff in a style i can really appreciate...
they are so great live, the studio cannot do them justice... very ballsy... dancin
music that puts a smile on my face!

the dude who came out next (name i fergit) and did the bluesy thing was
pretty good... i felt bad for him though, following such hot tunes... i wasn't into
hiw stuff much and while he played well, for me was the low point of the day...

then Hornsby... zowie! he loves playing the boston area and "apologized" to
'the fans for not being there much the last few years... he's never had a bad show
at great woods and explained his absence by saying "i just plain forgot!"... he
was glad to rectify the over sight though... :^) the man is amazing on keys...
sinply remarkable... i can see why Jerry loved to play with him so... he seemed the
biggest hit with the crowd that day too... a typical Hornsby set (which is NOT a put
down at all)...

then the flying K bros... pretty interesting, but i admit i needed to take a break
so i missed a lot of the act...

then Mickey... oddly enough, it was kind of what i expected... especially since so
many people had said "it won't be like anything you'd expect!" :^) some planet
drum elements survive i think in the brazilian and african poly rhythmic stuff...
i was very pleased... ican see how it may not translate as well into cd form though...
a great live act and i would certainlysee them again... Ger and i laughed at the
rap-ish elements, esp with Fire on the Mountain... so is his new stage name
"Grand Master Mickey" or "MC Hart" now???? :^) :^) :^) all kidding
aside, very nicely done... as for not enough Mickey influence, i disagree... it
wouldn't have happened at all without him! i assume that you mean he didn't
really stand out, which is not surprising to me at all... he didn't in planet drum
either... Mick's whole thing is not to dominate, but to decorate... to fit into the
groove in such a way that your contribrtion is there without calling attention
to yourself... kind of like the old concepts of "wah" or "chi"... a conduit of
energy that flows throught the whole group and brings it all together... an act
like that cant have standouts for long... great stuff...

acoustic tuna... been there, done that... lots of times... yes, it was very good
and Jorma was still hot! :^) the acoustic bit was a nice change from what came
before, but consistent with the day... nothing terribly remarkable... just solid
old-time tuna...

Bobby and Ratdog... eh, but not feh... Bobby, for me, is becoming a nostalgia
act... solid performance, but certainly not the level of music or musicianship
that was diplayed elsewhere all day... nice to hear some of the old cheasy songs
done iwth a band... much less chessy than i expected, and while he's in very
good voice, i echo the sentiments about there being something missing... and
it's not necessarly a jerry thing either... almost a shame to have him as the big
closer, feature-type act... i don't think he warrants it as a solo performer...
dont misunderstand, he was good, but overshadowed... sorry Bobby... love you to
pieces, but you're a part of the whole... a weak leading man with insufficient
supporting cast... the second lowest point of the day for me... :^/

best??? tough call... for me, it would be like, Los Lobos for performance, Hornsby
for musicianship, grand master Mickey for most interesting new stuff... then Tuna
for just being the same consistent, professional wonders that they are...

the solo between acts were all good and worth watching... but youngblood (?) and
Bobby just didn't do it for me much...

an awesome day though! nice to have the tribe together again...

wish i saw more of *you* all there... saw Mark Nelson, Jay Jolly dude, Ger, Bruce
Mandaro and severla members of the slipknot crowd, Tim Grady and a couple others
that my sleep deprived and and overworked brain can't think of just now...

i wouldn't follow them on tour, but i'd see them again!!!!

Bruce was great. That was the big surprise for me. BRUUUUCE!
"the way it is" rocked. He and Jack seemed to be having the
most fun. Bruce is so happy-looking, it's infectious!

Yes, thanks to JC for the ticket and the ride!

Mellow vending scene. GW wasn't the big crush of people I was expecting to
be.

I think that the big jam at the end of Ratdog's set was better up at OOB,
where Jack, Jorma, and the 2 main guitarists from Los Lobos sat in.
The OOB Throwing Stones was real heavy too - big emphasis with the "we're on
our own" line.
Playin', and the 2 acoustic tunes were nice though. I'd never heard
"It Should Have Been Me" before, but listened carefully to the lyrics..
wow Bob sure lays it on thick with that one! wearing his heart way out on
his sleeve on this song, for sure. First line: "I was a diamond in the rough"
etc. obviously refering to when he started in the Dead when he was a teenager.
Lots of lyrical references to "you" where the "you" is directly Garcia.

I agree with da ve's sentiments - the GD repetoire songs that Bob does with
Ratdog are missing a huge piece.

Enjoyed Mystery Box! Great basswork at the end of Fire On The Mountain by
the bass guitarist.

Sound in the pavillion was not good at all - echoey, smeared. better outside
on the lawn, but could have used more bass out there too.

I had a lot of fun. Nobody sucked for me ;-) I was impressed by the
'flow' of the event. The bigger acts were interspersed with the smaller
acts while the set up for the next band took place behind a screen.
Very well done so there were only very short breaks between acts. In
fact I was lamenting this as it seemed like there was never a good
time to go for a piss/food/general chatter. Finally managed all that
during the Flying Karamozov Bros.
Ran into Mark Nelson and Pete Kubick(sp?) out in the lots where
they were unsucessfully looking for Jay Jols. Hey, rfb, you're right.
Mark is one crazy dude! They stayed outside for a while when I went
in to catch Hot Tuna. Then quickly ran into Adam and then Gary and
Linda Huges who were sitting on the rail at the bottom of the lawn.
Sat with them for a while and then I snagged my friend's Barb and John
as they drifted by. Hung with them for the rest of the show in the
same general area on the lawn until the Karamozov's showed up and we
went for refreshments. Had seen Jeff Ceparski and Tim Grady and
maybe one or two others cruising below while on the lawn, but
couldn't really go rushing down to say hey. But Dave Levy did come
up(down?) and say hi while we were hanging out on the lawn.
After getting some food, we headed down into the seats where
we all had tickets, if not in the same area. I think we got snagged
by the same 60 year old woman someone else had mentioned. Right
at the bottom of ailse between sections 5 & 6, right? I could
see her giving us the eye as we walked into this empty ailse. Luckily
Barb and John were supposed to be in that section, but a few rows
back. So we just moved a few rows back. Luckily they didn't
check mine, as I was supposed to be over in 7.

And the music? Hey, I loved it. Lord knows I can't play any of it myself,
so I appreciate it when other people do it! I even enjoyed
Alvin Younblood Hart, whom I have now figured out, is probably not
related to Mickey. The hardest part may have been getting a good
handle on just what the Mint Juleps were singing. But that percussion
stuff worked for me. Kept thinking Weir might come out during Fire
on the Mountain, but otherwise, having heard a tape somewhere of
Mickey doing this years ago, his singing did not surprise me.
A good day with beautiful weather. Even got out of the GW lot
without much delay.

When I finally got to relate things to Amy she was going "Hot Tuna was there?
Los Lobos was there? I didn't know that. Now I wish I had gone!"
Uhhmmmm, I thought I'd mentioned them! Oh well. Next time...

For some reason I thought there was some biblical connection to it,
ie, John 4:20, but yeah, from what I understand it's just a reference
    to pot.
I don't know if anyone has been watching Letterman lately. They were
out in San Fran a month or two ago, and being the palce that it
is, they went out and found a hippy to hang out with for an afternnon.
Well, Manny the Hippy has become a fixture on Late Night, and he's
now reviewing movies with the ratings going from Diggity Dank (awesome)
to Schwag (it sucked). The other night, Manny reviewed
"Independence Day" and after giving it a Diggitiy Dank, said
he had to go off to do a 4:20. Dave was not clued in ;-)

Manny also said that he had met Vince Welnick, and got to play his
harmonica with Vince in some tribute to Jerry. Ah, the life of
    a professional hippy ;-)

At Old Orchard Beach, Ratdog's drummer's bass drum had "WEEDY" taped on
it in big 6" high letters with masking tape. Not all too sure about the
last letter "Y", I think it was a "Y". At Greatwoods, it definitly said
"WEED". So, whats all this about? An in-house joke or nickname for the
drummer, or was it following some sort of time-honored rock tradition and
actually a message from the band to the audience about a lack of a certain
substance? :-)

I went to the New Jersey show and would have to say that Ratdog sucked.
The band desperately needs a lead guitar player, the piano player is a
one trick pony and mathew kelly aint no great harp player. We couldnt
even sit through the whole set ,not worth it to get stuck in the exit.
It took us 3 hours to get to the show and i only live a half hour away

Speaking of which, what was that tallish thing behind Mickey, which
sort of sounded like amplified chimes...tubular bells? He alternately
wacked it, massaged it, and pressed on it, and it seemed to have a
bit of lag between the touching of it and the notes coming out.

Perhaps *it* is the Mystery Box? :-)

Well, being of sound mind and body, I took a well needed break from
work for the rest of last week after the Further show. So this check
in is a bit late. I've read through all the replies and pretty much
agree; it was a grate time, better than I wuz expecting even.

re dancing ladies (for those who showed up late), about an hour before
showtime there were four rather Prankster'ish drummers parading around
the grounds. These guys had some stamina! At some point they were
joined by three scantily clad ladies dressed sort of like peacocks
and the entourage rhumba'd toward the stage, where they put on another
good 20 minutes of dancing and drumming to open the show. It was like
being transported to Mardi Gras; very 'Nawlins, very cool. Found out
    later this was "Samba Nova".

Tuna opened with a good rockin set; they got into a fairly heavy,
psychedelic jam towards the end. Los Lobos also did a strong set, but
I have to say that more than anything their version of Bertha mostly just
made me miss Jerry. I've heard Jerry soar so many times on that tune,
especially when that first lead break kicks in. For me, the guitarist
    just didn't cut it.

Never saw Hornsby live before and it was a treat. What a band!

I was most anticipating Mickey Hart's set, and it didn't let me down.
The sound of the Juleps and that massive rhythm section was absolutely
    *HUGE* live.  I loved what they did to the first tune on the record;
there it's almost Madonna'ish, but at GW they slowed it down and did
a much more soulful version. I didn't even recognize it first.
I wish this set had been about twice as long.

I wasn't expecting much from Ratdog, perhaps due to some of the things
I've read in here. So with my lowered expectations, they were a
pleasant surprise. I thought the pianist, Johnny Johnson, made the
    band.  Someone previously said they thought he was underutilized;
from the point of solos that's true, but I don't think that was his
    job.  He just layed out this marvelous pillow for everyone to climb on;
a guy like that makes everyone else in the band sound good.

I thought the "Playin" jam at the end approached something very close
to a true Dead vibe; wish they had gone "Further" with it.

The walk back to my car through the vending scene was truly an
adventure. The lot was very dark, lit mostly by candles and small
    lights, faces bathed in shadow, figures darting in and out of view;
like stealing through Marrakesh at midnight.

Next morning I found a small business card under my wiper, with
    the following printed on it:

    ok.

Ratboy seems to need an overhaul. I'd like to hear some
    suggestions.

I have to agree with the previous note that Playin at G.W. was
top notch...so I'd recommend the following line-up taking
some of the current Further Fest performers and mixing them
    around a little....

    Bob (Ratboy) Weir (rythm guitar)
    Bruce Hornsby (grand piano)
The current Drummer (whoever that is)
Mickey Hart (percussion and othe weird things)
    Jorma (lead guitar)
    Rob Wasserman (bass)
Mint Juleps (vocals - to help on vocals for Jerry's songs)
(special addition) - Clarence Clemmons (Tenor Sax)

yep, i got one of those lsd cards too... haven't checked out the page yet
though...

as for ratdog, no, i wouldn't say they *sucked*... but they certainly weren't
the highlight of the day either... i agree that another guitar player woould
help... Bobby does a nice job with the vocals and the rythm, but as a lead
player he's not as strong as we've become accustomed to...

the biggest problem i have with listening to Bobby is NOT listening
to Jerry.... still... it's ok for what it is... but i also think that it's Bobby's
name, and not the bands innate talent, that get's him the "star" spot
on the bill... (and this is NOT intended as a slam... just a-callin' 'em as
i hear 'em...)

Deano, you nbeat me in with your reply! :^)

i don't think Ratdog needs Hornsby... and i don't think
his style would be as compatible... same goes for Mickey...

i agree Jorma would make a great addition on leads...

reading your suggestions it almost sounds like you want
to resurrect the Dead... :^) Mick and Bruce would be a
big step in that direction, and it's pretty clear that Bobby's
working in a bluesier (and cheesier :^) vein than before...

i think a decent lead player would enhance Ratdog considerably...
otherwise, let's let Bobby do his thing for a while and see what happens...

It seems a lot of people have been thinking about ways to
redo the Ratdog configuration;-). Here are a couple of ideas
that popped up in discussions over the weekend.

The first suggestion was to have Bob bail out on Ratdog and join Hot
Tuna. Bobby could easily replace Mike Falzarano as he's a much better
singer and rhythm player. Jorma and Bobby have the same musical roots,
so it would be a perfect fit, considering they've covered some of the
same material over the years (Walking Blues, I Know You Rider, Death
Don't Have No Mercy come to mind). They're both comfortable with
electric and acoustic shows, too. Now, if they could find Will Scarlet
    to play harp for em...;-)

The other idea would be to resurrect the electric Kingfish from the
mid 1970s. That band cooked! We were playing a King Biscuit CD of a
Kingfish show over the weekend, and they rocked!

More than anything, Weir needs to either bring back some other material
or start writing again. He's been mining the same group of songs with
Weir/Wasserman or Ratdog for almost five years now with no real new
material other than "Eternity" and "Easy Answers" and the new acoustic
    tune he did Thursday night.

	a few thoughts:

Ratdog was Bobby's side project before the Dead came to an end.
my personal opinion is that not having a lead guitar is by
design - he wants to highlight -his- talent. Sometimes it
was pretty hard to pick him out of the Dead's mix. Not so
	with Ratdog.

he has said over and over (but of course he says many things
that don't pan out) that Ratdog is not a Dead cover band.
Take it (or leave it) for what it is.

he may not be ready to play all the time with another lead
guitarist - yet. I've read where he said that he hears Jerry
all the time when he's playing (really, how could he not, after
all those years)...maybe he just figures we all can too ;-)

if he picked up right now with a permanent lead guitarist, then
we would hear the inevitable comparisons...I kinda like this
route for this first year...it's a good way to transition to
	whatever is ahead.

just back from vacation including Hartford and GW shows.

I enoyed the shows immensely. Nice line-ups of bands and pretty
cool crowds. The scene in Hartford was pretty much a free-for-all.
Very little security and a huge vending scene. I thought this show was
much stronger with better jamming and more cross band participation.

I don't like GW very much. The roving security gangs and the
accompanying strangeness makes for an uneasy feeling. I still had fun
though. I parked my truck and noticed PeterK parked in front of me. We
had grate seats - Thanks Pete!

Nayway, an enjoyable time was had.

526.211Reconfiguring RatdogIPL31::BSEGALMon Jul 15 1996 20:2216
Regarding reconfiguring Ratdog: I agree that the original Kingfish was
the best non-Dead thing Weir has done. Why? Because he was surrounded
by some excellent musicians that included a lead guitar player. I'll
have to check my first album, but I think he had Dave Nelson or Torbert
from New Riders, maybe David Frieberg (or someone of similar caliber)
on keyboard, and Robbie Hottentot (sp?) on guitar. The guitarist was
really sensational but was soon busted for pot and did time I believe.
Never knew what happened to him after that.

But I digress. The point is that Weir's best non-Dead band included a hot
    lead guitarist who wasn't Jerry.

I also agree that we should give him some slack during the transition
but I still think it's fair to say that he could do better than Ratdog.

Went to Liberty State Park for the festival last week. By far it was
the most beautiful setting for a show. (Almost made up for the 2 hours
it took to get into the parking lot! This included having the highway
blocked off, a cop screaming at us to "get back in the car" when we
asked for further directions, getting re-directed through the slums
of Jersey City, ditching our car in the Liberty Science Ctr parking lot
(best move of the day), fighting with the ticket takers to get our food in,
    etc, etc)

Nothing like staring at the Statue's butt all day on one side of the
park, with the Verrazano Bridge on the other side. Beautiful weather,
low humidity, surrounded by good friends. After dark the twinkling
lights of lower Manhatten was magical!

Up until Ratdog got on stage and proceeded to collectively bring down
the heads of the 25K people there, the show was great. I even thought
Mickey's Mystery Box had moments! After being pleasantly surprised in
SPAC about how good Ratdog was, to say the least they were most
disappointing at Liberty State Park. Nothing like starting off with 5
slow songs! (and not great ones at that).

After considering how horrid it was to get to the site, we bagged the
rest of the show, opting to "beat the crowd". And, guess what! The
Jersey cops were setting up a DWI check point at the parking lot exit!

Bought the Furthur Festival CD. Nice compliation of the bands.

Yes, Weir needs a lead guitarist - how about Steve Kimmock from Zero?

I was very happy to be back in a Dead atmosphere. It's not the same,
but, having all these bands I like in one place had its moments.
Though I feel if they do this next year, they should cut down on the
number of bands and give the remaining 4 or 5 bands more time on stage.
I definitly wanted more Tuna and Hornsby!

    Just my 2 cents...

Thank You! For a real good time!!!

Wasn't nothin like the Dead, but still a hoot! Our Furthur in-tour-rage
arrived in the lot after noon, so there wasn't a lot of time to shop
and party, although we managed to squeeze both in befor hitting
Fiddlers Green inside. Some new t-shirts for this winter, one with a
cool small Jerry embroderd on the left side front on the T, a Further
Fest T with Calvin, Hobbes, Pooh and Tigger, and a bunch of new bumper
stickers. Patty got two beautiful hippie dresses. People in the lot, as
usual were cool. We saw and met up with everyone we knew...sorta a small
scene outside the venue, but it was goooooood to see the tribes again!
All sorts of crazies, as we all know.

Inside Fiddlers it was probably 100 degrees. We met a couple of friends
in the shade area and somehow managed to snag a WAITER! and have about
8 Fat Tires delivered to us. I sucked 'em down like water. Tuna came
on and kicked ass! The place was rockin with bodies with smiles for
miles! Hornsby did his thing, which I enjoyed until Jack Straw. Don't
get me wrong...i liked the tune and danced with the best and rest or
'em, but at the end, Patty had to use my T-shirt to wipe the tears off
of my face. During the song I was instantly transported back to The
first time in Vegas, opener was JS /w Hornsby, and Man...talk about
instant awareness that Jerry WASN'T there this time....it took me a
    little while to recover.

John Wesly Harding had Jorma come out and they did a short
    Jack-a-Roe, which was cool.

    Acoustic Tuna before Mystery BOX.
Mystery Box was HOT! Patty some how weaseled
us down to the front, right next to the sound board, and we danced our
asses off! The Sound People had Security clear the aisles a couple of
times, but we were havin such a ball dancin, they (the sound
people, don't know who they were, i assume old dead sound guys)
just smiled at us and left us alone. We throughly enjoyed MB.
After Mystery Box, I had a momentary lapse of my synapse's and lost
Patty for awhile...don't ask...once we found each other again, we were
able to enjoy Ratdog, she had been able to see most of Ratdog from our
grate MB seats that the sound people let us use.. What a lite show!
Although tight, I really didn't get into them until the "encores" when
Los Lobos guitar players joined for Little Wing, One More SAturday Nite!
(which sent the place into a frenzy!), and Knockin. After Knockin,
it was time to wipe the eyes again.

THe Lot was the same ole fun time again, just like the old days, and
helped "bring back that feeling" and get rid of the blues again.
Security made it's last sweep with Denver's Finest at 11;00 PM. right
on time. We watched one hell of a lightening show from Denver all the
way back to The Springs, missing most of the downpour that hit there.
A few beers at my house with the crew, and i fell down.

Some funny highlights...the waiter and the Fat Tires, holding the
walk-in cooler door open for a worker when he had his arms full and then
standing in the 0 degree cooler for about 20 minutes just to cool
down, shoulda seen the looks on peoples faces when the door opened and
we come walking out of zero into 100 degrees, cool as cucumbers!,,if for
only a few minutes...too bad I couldn't talk the guy into selling me
one of the 20 lb bags of ice...i tried.
The little girl security was about to drag off when Patty and I grabed
her and said "she's with us"...she had this huge butterfly tat that
covered most of her back that "flew" when she danced in front of us....
good thing Patty is an understanding woman (she thought it was cool too).
Realizing that *I* was the one that was lost all the time i was looking
for Patty whom I thought was lost.
Listening to Hoot when we got home trying to convince me we should head
to Park City Utah the next day and catch tonites show..."It's
gettin better!, it's really gettin better!" Hoot thought Denver was
better than Hartford. We were supposed to leave yesterday at 4pm...%^)
I wish we had...i'd do it all over again.

Speaking of Jorma and the Dead:

Last night's attendees of the Furthur Festival at Shoreline were treated to
an exceptionally special treat when half way through Mickey's set he
introduced an old friend (everyone saying 'okay, hi Bob') "You all
remember Phil don't you?" and the place went nuts!!!!! The only possible
louder crowd response would of been if Garcia himself had risen from the
grave!!!!!!! People miss Phil alot. Everytime they projected his image on
the screens there would be this ROOOOAAAARRRR from the crowd. So Mickey's
Mystery gig, Bob, Phil, Bruce, all roar into a "Fire" (surprise, surprise)
with Phil taking a fat bass solo where the Jerry would of been. And he was
not done yet. Mr. Lesh returns during Bobby's gig, along with everyone
possible for a smoking Truckin'---> Other One with Phil dropping the killer
bomb to bring them all fully into Other. I could not even make out all who
were on the stage at that time but for sure Jorma because he was jammin in
a big way, Bruce Hornsby, Mickey on drums, David Hidalgo of LL, and get
this the biggest surprise of the evening, fucking Sammy Hagar!!!! So Sammy
Hagar and Jorma Kauckonen jammin Jerry licks. It rocked!!! I may be
missing others. But it was a great treat!!! I don't think I have ever
seen Phil more animated, like getting in people's faces, jammin all hard,
and acting like a rock star instead instead of just kind of hanging like he
did in the day. It was very apparent he was very fired up!!!

Other highlights: Bobby joining Bruces band for a great Jack Straw. Bruce
joining Bob for a nice Cassidy.

Jorma could be the man for the job if all the former members ever try to
put things back together.
