512.0. "Can Someone be a Deadhead if they weren't alive in time for a show??" by MILKWY::HEADSL::SAMPSON (Driven by the wind) Fri Feb 09 1996 16:37

Now that I've blasted through some 7 or 800 notes I haven't had time to
read in the last couple of weeks, there are some questions and comments that
have been building.

This is a question in the note title has entered my mind because I think
it would be unfortunate if they couldn't. If their parents were Deadheads and
played lots of Dead tunes, would that help their life situation. These are
things I hope can be, because doesn't everyone want as good or better for their
children as they had?? I know I do and I would be happy if (s)he can find
something like Robyn and I found with the Dead scene and the people around it.

Now this human name thing I said I'd comment on later. To those of
you who have them, did you happen to have an easier time coming up with a
particular gender name? And did that gender happen to be correct?? I'm
kind of curious about that one because We don't have any positive medical
confirmation, but agreeing on a boys name has not been as easy as a girls.

Now I know I could have written this in the Feel good news note, but I
decided it was important enough to stand on it's own. It's certainly important
enough to me!

Geoff, looking forward to being called Dad

And another question to those who are in the know, Is it as fun and
rewarding as they say it is ;^)?

    Congratulations Geoff!!

We had a hard time coming up with a male name, and then we had a male,
and we were put to the challenge. We still did not really decide until
    Peter was born.

I know what you are asking.....before I was a Dad, I heard so many
people say "Its so wonderful and fun", and I found it hard to believe
that everyone could feel that way. But I do!! It is all that it is
cracked up to be, and you can choose whether you want it to be
something you love, or something that you look upon as a chore, or a
    little of both.....

    Have fun!

    life I try to enjoy.

And don't forget to congratulate Robyn! She's the one doing all the
    work right now.

	Conratulations to you all!

Yes it is all that it's cracked up to be (and more)
With my daughter(Danielle) we couldn't decide until the last month
With my son (Dylan) I wanted John but it was too plain for my wife.
It sure is fun trying to decide...

congrats to both of you. exciting news :-) :-)

yes, it's all it's cracked up to be, and more. especially when
	they become teenagers! ;-)

we actually named jentri after she was born. the nurse wanted to
write her name on the little card and we sat there shrugging our
shoulders, saying "dah, i don't know, what do you wanna call her"
;-) and when we came up with jentri, the nurse asked how to spell
it? hmmm, i don't know. when we got past that, she wanted a
middle name!! "HEY! WE JUST HAD A BABY HERE! I CAN'T BE BOTHERED
	WITH THIS!" ;-) ;-)

wow... i wasnt' in on friday so i had no idea when i saw you on
saturday!!!!! congrats to all of you... :^) :^) :^)

i don't see why a kid can't be a deadhead even if they weren't there
for it... after all, it's still america and you can still be anything
you want supposedly (even if you can't SAY anything you want
    anymore)...

really is a good thing you have that new, bigger boat... :^)

    con-grateful-lations to all involved!!

    kids will give you joy,
    kids will give you grief.
    kids will bring you sadness,
and your kids may well be the worlds relief.

    blood is thicker than water,
    and there's not much GRATEer
whether it be a son or a daughter.
than to be a deadhead mother or a deadhead father.

Hey Now!! Congratulations Robyn and Geoff and Meghann!
(how do babies do on sail boats? ...oh, they're easy, how do
	-toddlers- do?!?)

as to names, all 3 times we couldn;t agree on a boy's name.
Luckily, the first 2 were girls, so no problem. Eli wasn't
named until 3 days after he was born ;-)...

as to the question "can you be a Deadhead if you never..." -
I think the answer is yes. Sadly, they'll never get to experience
the live thing, but I think even when the band was still touring
there were real, true Deadheads(tm) that had never seen them
perform. I think that there are people who just -are- on the
same wavelength with the music, and no matter when they live on
this planet, they will resonate to the Grateful Dead's music -
	they will be Deadheads.

I think I have brainwashed my own kids over the years by constantly
playing Dead music enough that it seems, at least the oldest, will be
a Deadhead. Now, the music will be played on a smaller scale (for
a while), but that's where we'll go to get our fix. As da ve has
said, it will become an American folk genre of it's own.

	long Live the Dead!

congrats Geoff & Robyn!!!

parenthood's well worth it

sure, a child (or anyone else) can be a deadhead. I rememeber when Scott
Abbot (former DECcie, deadhead for a long time and owner of numerous tapes)
went to his first show, fall tour '93 I think. I figured he'd have been
going for years.

enjoy!

Confgrats also. I'm mostly a read only, but I met Geoff and Robyn breifly at a
Jimmy Buffett concert a couple of years ago. I also have the same news and the
same problems. I'll be a new daddy in June/July, have a ton of girl names but we
just can't seem to come up with more than 2 or 3 boy names. I'm currntly
introducing my 11 year old neice to the Dead and she likes it. I think she could
be a Deadhead even though she'll never have the show experience.

Congrats to Chris too!

We didn't have a name except for a "nickname" we called the boy (we knew).
Then everything got crazy and we had the baby 8 weeks early.

We got to the hospital and they asked what we were going to name him and
we said we don't know. That was ok for then. After delivery they said
"what can we call him?" and we said "we don't know so call him Sam". That
was the nickname; it stuck. He's fine and his name became Samuel Robert.
