510.0. "favorite GD lyric" by STAR::OCTOBR::DEBESS (Wake Now, Discover...) Wed Feb 07 1996 20:21

I feel like starting a new note - and a Grateful Dead
	related one, at that.

what is your -very- favorite Grateful Dead lyric?
if you had to pick only one line/sentence that was the
most meaningful to you, or the most beautiful sounding,
or the most poignant, or the best picture-created-by-a-few-words,
or whatever the criteria you choose - what would it be?

for it's pure trippiness, I pick:

Copper dome bodhi drip a silver kimono
Like a crazy quilt stargown through a dream night wind.
	(from China Cat Sunflower)

but it sure is hard to pick only one!
	Debess

	there's so many single lines.
this is probably my favorite verse:

	Lady finger, dipped in moonlight,
Writing, "What for?" across the morning sky.
        Sunlight splatters, dawn with answers.
Darkness shrugs and bids the day goodbye.
        Speeding arrow, sharp and narrow,
What a lot of fleeting matters you have spurned.
        Sev'ral seasons with their treasons,
Wrap the babe in scarlet colors, call it your own.

It all rolls into one and nothing comes for free,
There's nothing you can hold for very long.
And when you hear that song come crying like the wind,
It seems like all this life was just a dream.

The wheel is turning and you can't slow down,
you can't let go and you can't hold on,
you can't go back and you can't stand still,
if the thunder don't get ya then the lightning will.

And it's just a box of rain or a ribbon for your hair;
Such a long, long time to be gone and a short time to be there.

re "High Time" I thought it alternated between high time and hard

I use the following from UJB often:

I only want to hold you,
I don't want to tie you down,
Or fence you in the lines
I might have drawn.
It's just that I--
I've gotten used to having you around
My landscape would be empty
If you were gone.
.
.
.
But I'll still sing you love songs,
Written in the letters of your name,
And pray the storm to come,
For it surely looks like rain.

[Sorry to say, don't think I can make the taping party -- have a 1-on-1
with one of my kids this weekend, and he has big plans for my time...
Too bad. It'd be fun to see how I'd fit in, considering how much
*unrelenting grief* I get from a couple of long-term deadhead buddies.

"Yeah yeah, I know I don't have to try the segueway 7 times to get it
perfect -- I just wanna!" <y'all> "Let's sedate him and shut him

Yeah, surprising how Bobby can combine the good with the awful.

The line, "I'll still sing you love songs/written in the letters
of your name" was always a favorite, though...
