490.0. "the future of touring?" by ALFA2::DWEST (his job is to shed light...) Wed Oct 11 1995 16:11

some of todays chatter has got me thinking about tours....

one of the rumors that i've heard is that there will be no more
multi-night runs... only one night stands in each town to try and cut
down on the zaniness and make it easier for the band to come back
    around...

assuming the boys tour again (still a big assumption):

will you go "on tour" anymore?
how far will you go to see a show?
do you think single nights will cut down on the problems
    		associated with tour heads?

for myself, i doubt i'd go on tour anymore... maybe two cities
just to see hwat is happening, but probably not weeks of vacation as
    before...

i dont know how far outside new england i'd go to see a show...
probably not much past new york... unless they just happened to be
doing a show in someplace that i was going to anyway...

and last, yes, i think the scene will change dramatically... shakedown
st won't disappear, but i bet it's all smaller... people will be less
likely (imho) to seel the kids, pack the car, and live int he lots
for a string of one nighters... esp if the repetoire is reduced and
    sets are more planful...

i think we'll find out just how big a piece of the pie Jerry really
    was...

see da ve, there -is- still something to talk about ;-)

now, supposing that they do decide to continue playing together:
I kindof think the whole scene will naturally get much smaller
even if they don't do the single night thing...many will go
to the "first" set of shows, but after that, it will be the
die-hards.. cause it just ain't gonna be the same thing without
	Jerry...

and not that "not the same thing" will necessarily be a bad
thing...I'm really looking forward to what it all will evolve
to be...and I'm definately going to be there to see it happen...

> will you go "on tour" anymore?

I haven't really been "on tour" since my kids were born - the
logistics were just too difficult...but making vacation plans
around -their- tour schedule and hitting multiple shows (in
one place), that I did...and that I probably still would do
to go to places that I would like to be anyways...like Highgate,
like SPAC, like Maine, like Albany

> how far will you go to see a show?

I've been planning and saving for about a year now to take a
month off next summer and go out to the west coast for the first
time in my life - I was psyched to imagine seeing my first west
coast shows - shoreline, eugene, seattle...don't put things off,
people, cause you just never know...
I'm still going cause going to see the Dead was not my prime
reason for going there ;-)...but if they -are- playing together
again, I'll probably make some plans around that...

> do you think single nights will cut down on the problems
> associated with tour heads?

yeah that would definately do it, i think...coming into town
for one night and then leaving right away for the next show
would cut down on the living-on-the-streets-or-in-the-parking-lot
scene, which I think is real difficult for communities to
	embrace ;-)...

> will you go "on tour" anymore?

not initially.
i need to see what it is about first, locally, ie: within the boston
area: prov, hartford, worc. boston.
if i liked what i saw, maybe touring would be possible, but
probably not. i guess i'm not ruling it out. i never really
went on heavy duty tour, maybe 3 cities max.

> how far will you go to see a show?

local initially.
if it lines up with a biz.trip, sure.

> do you think single nights will cut down on the problems
> associated with tour heads?

this depends.
if it is boston->worcester->providence->hartford->NYC, etc, i don't
think it'll cut down too much. if the cities are spread more apart,
like: boston->north carolina->buffalo then yeah, it would reduce i
think. got to make it harder to tour to cut down on the crowds.

Concert Tour Gossip Week of April 8, 1996

DEADHEADS GOT AN EARLY TREAT from the Easter Bunny last week with the
announcement that members from the now disbanded GRATEFUL DEAD will tour
major amphitheatres this summer. Called "THE FURTHER FESTIVAL" the tour
will feature Bob Weir, Rob Wasserman & Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box,
the Bruce Hornsby Band, Hot Tuna and Los Lobos. In between those acts,
audiences will be entertained by the likes of the Flying Karamazov
Brothers. The tour also promises a vendor's fair, featuring Grateful Dead
merchandisers, non-profit activities, and maybe a computer wing. The trek
is expected to run from June 20th to August 4th, with the dates being
announced within the next two weeks.

Cameron Sears of Grateful Dead Productions told POLLSTAR, "What we're
trying to achieve is the next step for all of us. The situation is
evolving. We have a lot of musical cohorts that are all going to carry on
with us. This is a form of expression that these guys have wanted to
undertake, and circumstances being what they are, they are now doing it."
Sears added that, although the tour won't feature all the members of The
Dead, its available to all bandmembers whenever they have a desire to
appear. "We're hoping that this festival will prove strong enough that we
can do it next summer, that we can do it indoors in the fall or spring.
Everybody in our organization is welcome to participate. We're hoping that
it's a building block for experimentation and for them to be creative as
they see fit."

When asked if this concept will fill the shoes of past Grateful Dead tours
such as the band's annual east coast romp every fall, Sears said, "It's
possible. We're taking our first little steps out of the corral right now.
Our fans seem very interested in what we're doing. If it proves as strong
as we feel it will, we will definitely explore arena tours and other ways
to present this."

This is wonderful news! SUNY Purchase is about 15 minutes from my
house. It's a lovely campus with acres and acres of woods!

Haven't seen the Zen Tricksters since they weren't known as Volunteers
and they played in a sleazy bar in Freeport on Long Island!

    Can't wait.

Hmmmm, seem to remember a wierd weekend wandering around the Purchase
campus nearly 20 years ago, complete with Sylvester the Guinea Pig,
devotees of Sri Chinmoy walking around with their blue satin basketball
style jackets, endless circling, hallucinations, and making
fun of some stupid alligator/swamp movie in true MST3K fashion
whilst burnt out the next day. Just glad I didn't go to see 200
Motels in that condition. Might have been too much to take!
