450.1Albany/Highgate Tape TreeXLIB::REHILLCall Me Mystery HillThu Aug 17 1995 16:1542

    	Ok, the seeds are in the mail (really trust me) and on their way to
    Dave Benjamin.

    	With all the various notes in here, asking about the
    Albany/Highgate tree, I opted to clean this one up, and start it fresh.

    	The Highgate tapes we made by Tim Dalton, using Neuman mics, and
    were FOB.

    	Albany, 6/21, were from the taping section, using AGK490 (I think)
    microphines, with shotgun Capsules.

    	The 6/22 show was made using Senheisser 441 microphones.

    	All shows are on one 90 minute and one 100 minute tape.

    	6/22 runs almost three full hours of music. The tape in Set II
    flips after a very nice jam, and before Terrapin. This side continues
    with Terrapin>Drums>Space>Watchtower. I put the Black Peter>Round and
    Round and Encore of I Fought The Law at the end of Tape I.

    	Ok, so this was my last Jerry Dead show, hence all the information.

    	Sign ups for this one should probably run forever. These are the
    shows to share. But well, let's say until September 1st to get this
    rolling. Remember, if you sign up as a Branch you'll get tapes
    quicker!!!!

Don't know what's happened with this tree, but since it's after Sept 1 (see
base note), I thought I'd try and help by laying out a tree based on the
signups and locations, where possible. I added leblanc to my brnach since I
haven't seen him in a while and this will give me an excuse (I must need
another vacation). Anyway, since I'm not the trunk this isn't the official
tree but just thought I'd try and help Dave out. (Fredda, you said both so
I wasn't sure if you meant both Albany shows of both venues)

	listening, the little bit I've been able to, to these tapes,
	I'd have to say that we have already gotten a little taste
	of what the Dead will sound like without Jerry, at least
	guitar-wise...Jerry's soaring leads are missing...a lot...

	I'm one who is always listening closely to what Bobby's
	doing - cause I love what he plays so much - but so often
	it's hard for me to pick out of the mix what he's doing,
	so I concentrate on him. Jerry, usually, is not difficult
	to pick out of the mix ;-) not by a long shot. On these
	tapes of summer tour (at least what I've heard so far),
	you can't say that. I mean, it seems like it's the first
	time ever that I'm listening for Jerry's part specifically
	cause I can't hear him at all...

	I listened to the 2nd set of Highgate and heard, HOW many
	Jerry songs in a row, and I thought, how often does -that-
	happen? Then I thought, if Jerry's singing so much, he's
	not playing so much.

	Bobby really does step in and take up the slack.

	fwiw,

	i also noticed that jerry's guitar dropped out of the mix a lot
	in highgate. there's a couple of good spots, but there's also a
	couple of places where it's noticably missing.

	it caused me to listen closer to vince, who i thought did some

450.41Ahhhh Albany - my favorite subject!DELNI::DSMITHand they keep on dancinWed Oct 18 1995 16:2522

    I don't even think Jerry was in the Sugar Mag mix at Highgate.

    re- Albany Scarlet->Fire

    Approx. 25 minutes.

    A severe lyrical error in Scarlet led to an amazing transitional jam,
    like none I'd heard before. The Fire, was so smoking it was downright
    ire. Jerry was experiencing mega guitar problems which gives us a 2
    minute sample of Bobby and the band jamming out some tropical stuff...
    then Jerry's ok, he turns around and delivers, full blast, with roaring
    crowd approval. The Dew that night was the best I've experienced.
    Religous.

    I noticed that the entire band was looking to Jerry for typical queue's
    that he was not giving. A fine example would be the unexpected, extra,
    couple "Fire on the Mountain"'s at the end of the Fire. Or, on the
    second night, the 4 "We Will Survives" at the end of the Touch of Grey
    which is usually 2 "We Will Survive's".

    I don't even have the tapes yet....I hope my memory isn't failing here.

for me, the music i heard live for albany is MUCH better than what is on the
tapes. it is all state-of-mind. the tapes, imo, portray a pretty weak
showing by jerry..understandably so because of his health, or one might
argue that he did damn well considering his health! i would typically
not keep these shows in my collection, but since it was the last i saw, it'll
be kept for historical reasons. i have so many more shows on tape that
blow the albany/highgate run away.

just my opinion
450.44yea, but...SALEM::BENJAMINFri Oct 20 1995 19:318
      we all have many tapes that blow the whole summer tour away, however,
    the Albany shows( 2nd sets anyway) are about as good as it gets for
    the 1995 version of the Grateful Dead.....IMHO...!!

               :-)
