417.0. "WOODSTOCK THEN AND NOW...." by SLOHAN::FIELDS (Strange Brew) Thu Aug 11 1994 18:08

So its was 25 years ago....where were you when you heard about

    			WOODSTOCK....

and what do you think this WOODSTOCK '94 will be seen like in 25
    years....

Myself, I was at Hampton Beach NH. at our summer cottage..I remember
listening to the news on my GE transitor radio (which I still have)
and then seeing the pictures in the paper of the traffic back up on the
    NY Thru-way (which I wish I still had !)

I was 8..My oldest sibbling, Bonnie, she was 18 but she didn't go. My
brother Dave who was 16/17 wanted to go after he heard about what was
going on up there...but Mom & Dad were against it....

my thought (I somewhat remember) were, I was glad that all those people
    weren't at the beach....

I did think about going to this one but then it came to me that this
one is not really in the same league as the 1st one...I mean the 1st
one was a kind of statement that anything was possible and war could
end if this could happen...this one is more like, it will cost you $135
for the ticket and you better bring your visa card if ya wanna eat
    something and sleep somewhere.

not that the 1st one was suppose to be like it turned out ! noone would
have wanted it to get so wild, and out of control like it did. But the
people somehow got through it and made it seem somewhat OK.

I think it's Friday, Saturday, Sunday. I have one friend who tried to get
me to go with him, but I already had plans. (Of course, I also considered
chucking those and going anyway, but reason prevailed, or was it the
lure of the $135 tickets? ;-) We'll be in Westchester this weekend, so
I don't know if well see any traffic tieups, hope not! My wife still remembers
getting stuck on the Thruway with her folks for the original. Just innocent
tourists caught in the melee of peace, love, and understanding! My oldest
brother went, but he says he was way out in the boonies and didn't see/hear
much.

I wouldn't mind going to Woodstock. I like a lot of the bands there and from
what I was told the price doesn't seem to be all that bad at a mere 4 bucks a
band (includes camping)...and just how much did you all shell out for one band
in the Boston Garden :)

I can't manage all the time off and logistical hassles of going (I'd want to be
there now).

It does go from some time Friday afternoon til early Saturday morning...then
12-2am on Sat and finishes up with a 12 to 12 on Sunday.

Yeah, I would like to be going too, but would have liked to see them
arrange the bands more closely to the style of music they play -- that way you
can go far far away for bands (like Metallica and Nine inch Nails in my case),
and try to get closer for bands like the Band and the Allmans...

for example - It's kinda weird that they have the Nevilles in between Metallica
and Nine inch Nails

Yeah, I'd say more than a few, definitely more than a few, will be crossing
that bridge in the opposite direction.

Woodstock and vicinity is approximately 100 miles Nouth of NYC.
Tim is heading South to NJ, and I'd imagine that most woodstock II
goers would be heading north towards the concert grounds. Even so,
I'd doubt traffic would be backed up for 100 miles!

I wouldn't worry about it Tim...

The one is Bethel is the one that got cancelled. The one that is happening
this weekend is actually in Woodstock(I thinks, or real nearby). Either
way, both are west of the Hudson, and, yes, anyone coming up that way
will be going over the Tappan Zee, in the same direction that Tim is
heading. We'll be in the Westchester area, but don't have to cross
over the bridge ourselves. Time will tell.

Yeah, most traffic from New England would head 84W and cross over ???
I always head south on 684 to my brothers from there, so I'm not
sure. Bear Mountain Bridge?? (much smaller than Tappen Zee). Farther
north, they're likely to hit Albany and then swing a little southwest.
But from Connecticut, Long Island, NYC area, the Tappen Zee is the
most likely bet.

Yes, I would agree.

If you are going from Boston->NJ area, I'd take 84->684 South->Saw Mill River
Parkway->George Washington Bridge. You'd be guaranteed to not hit any
Woodstock traffic since they'd all be crossing the Hudson River further north
(ie. Tappan Zee).

Keep in mind that a large amount of Woodstock traffic will be from the "I can
afford Woodstock tickets" NYC/CT/LI area.

possible traffic advice:

contrary to what i usually do (which is stay as far from nyc as possible when
heading to nj), instead head south sooner and go straight towards nyc,
crossing the hudson as far south as you can. that will probably keep you
away from woodstock traffic more than the tappan-zee would.

The things I remember about interviews I've heard (Jerry) is that the
band was dosing heavily, it was raining and the wind was howling,
with lightening and all kinds of electricity happening. THere were
a couple of inches of water on the stage itself, and the band thought
they'd all be electrocuted via their instruments. Must made for a tight

So did anyone see Woodstock? I watched about 20 hours of
it on a friends pay per view.

Allman Brothers were outstanding as usual. Hot Tuna sat in with
The Band. Weir/Wasserman did a duet followed by the Band joining
in.
Joe Cocker opened on Saturday with a lot of energy. Santana did a
tribute to Hendrix as did Porno For Pyros. Lots of naked people.

I taped on audio, the sets of Cocker, The Band, Weir/Wasserman, Allmans,
Santana, Spin Doctors, Dylan, Traffic and I can't remember what else.
Anyone is welcome to it.

hmmmm, you don't have a neice named audio, do you?? ;-)

Letterman had Calvert DeForest (you know, Larry Bud...) live at the
show. Calvert said "And take it from me. The brown acid is STILL bad!!"

NBC out of New York City (roundabouts where I was this weekend) had
Al Rocha, the weatherman (who lives near my brother, apparently, for
what that's worth ;-) live from Woodstock '94. Definitely for
hype value. However, at one point he did come up with this somewhat
confusing note, which may or may not have some consequence.
Al reported that Rob Wasserman of the Grateful Dead had slipped in
the mud and broken his arm, and this might have some consequence for
the upcoming tour. Now, Wasswerman and Weir were one of the acts
but we all know Wasserman has no real connection with the Dead otherwise.
But if he got the names wrong, instead of the affiliation.....

Haven't seen the official news yet, so I'll take it with a grain of
salt.

points like Rollins Band, Nine Inch Nails, Green Day and Porno for
Pyros. I'm just not into that thrashing/punk stuff. Most of these
bands seemed talented with the exception of Nine Inch Nails. They showed
up for their set covered in mud, smashed all their instruments and
hardly played anything recognizable as music.

Green Day, a punk band from England (or thereabouts) taunted the wet,
mud covered crowed which responded by launching mud clods at the band.
The guitarist/singer had to put his guitar down because he had mud stuck
between the strings. Fans jumped on stage and on the band. It got
pretty ugly. These same fans had booed WOMAD (world organization of
music and dance?) when their precussion set went overtime. Peter Gabriel
and guy from Green Day told them to cool it. That was the low point in
Woodstock.

Yep, you hit most of the low points ;-)
Although, when I watched the "replay" of Green Day it was pretty
funny. And I didn't think they were too bad. Not as bad as Porno
	for Pyros.

I heard that as early as Saturday afternoon 3 people
had already died. :(

I decided I hated the singer for Green Day because of his
uncool attitude to the crowd. But as the mud onslaught
became more intense he never once look like he would
stop playing. He kept on jammming even as mud hit him in the
head. He gained my respect. Then when he tossed mud back
at the crowed with a smile I think that showed he finally
understood what Mudstock was all about. Getting dirty?

One woman fell off a bicycle on Rte 9 in New York (which is by no means a
bicycle friendly road) and was hit by a truck.

One guy had diabetes and died from cardiac arrest.

The last I heard about was a ruptured spleen, which was said to be
a pre-existing condition (yeah but don't they treat these things??)

Nothing directly related to the festivities, other than that the woman
was biking to Woodstock, and the other two were there when they died,
and may have died similarly had they not been there.

I have a set list at home (courtesy of a Dylan freak friend of mine).

I must say his singing was probably the best I've ever heard from him. He
really seemed to be putting a real effort into getting the tunes out with good
quality, unlike, for instance, Letterman's 10th Anniversary special :-)

from memory:

just like a woman
watchtower
rainy day woman #9 and #35 (correct title?)
masters of war
highway 61
it ain't me babe

he did about 6-7 more tunes. can't remember the titles.

perhaps I've chosen the wrong word to describe
Bob Dylan's unique singing style. I'll retract the use
of the word nasal and simply replace it with "unique" ;')

adam is right on though about Dylan's effort. He really
seemed to be trying to enunciate the lyrics; very intelligible.
Not being a Dylan expert, I thought his set last night was the
best live Dylan I've heard yet. The MTV-generation crowd there
seemed to appreciate his performance. The V-jays responded after
his set something like "I guess Dylan just showed this crowd why
he's considered the one of the best/the king/the main-man" or
something like that. I do agree.

I just listened to the Dylan set on the way in today...
Don't think Twice, Masters of War and It's all over now
all 3 were acoustic, including mandolin and some steel guitar.

The VJ said during I Shall Be Released, flags from all over
the world and country started popping up from the crowd, very moving;
when the acoustic ended the "Mosh Pit" reappeared and
that "Generation X is into Dylan!"

My neighboor went to Mudstock. His first hand acount...

A free for all. You could have walked right, unharrased without
a ticket. Twice, he carried multiple cases of beer into the
concert grounds. The field was a "cesspool", smelling like
urine and feces. He would have killed for dry feet. You could
come and go from the grounds as you pleased. Didn't see many bands
but heard most of 'em. The rain was cold, he had a blast, but was
often (always) cold, wet and miserable. Aerosmith was his highlight.
Drive home was no big deal. A lot of people came and left on Sat,
he figures a lot more than 400,000 people saw the event because of
the constant flux of people in and out all weekend long.

My neighbor (Jude) had to pay some guy with a backhoe $20
to yank his Saab out of the mud in Lot G, which apparantly
was a total mud pit. They had bulldozers there pulling
everybody out. Concertgoers were forced to park in remote
lots and take a bus into the concert site. Jude had dry boots,
clothes etc. but was unable to get to his car during the shows
except via bus, 'cause nobody had any cars near the concert.
Jude said there was a 3 hour wait for a bus ride back to your car
as early as Saturday afternoon.

FYI, I just got back (on Tuesday, August 16) from 6 days of camping near the
original Woodstock festival site. It was definitely happening. Some of the
performers who played included Country Joe, Arlo Guthrie, Mountain, Canned Heat,
Physcedelic Kitchen (check them out if you can), Melanie, Richie Havens, and Joe
Walsh (The only performer so far to play at both Woodstock '94 and Greedstock).
The music usually started around noon and lasted until sunrise (which we saw a
couple of times). And, of course it was free. The atmosphere was outstanding,
with people helping each other, very little police intervention, and a lot of
kind buddies to meet and talk to. I wasn't at the original in '69, but I could
still feel the essence of what that event created.

When we left Tuesday evening to come back to reality in the town of beans, the
event was still happening. It looks like it may still be going on throughout
the weekend of August 20th. For more detailed info, try calling the Sullivan
County chamber of commerce (914-794-2211), or the Town of Bethel (914-796-7500).
People were driving their cars up onto the festival site and pitching their
tents right there. There is also a very kind camp ground about 1 1/2 miles from
the site that we stayed at. It is called Woodstock on the Lake Campground
(original, huh), and the people that run it are very cool. I believe its number
is 914-583-6210.

Please return e-mail with any other questions.

Go out and enjoy it.

re Woodstock and lawsuits, interestingly enough there were over 80
lawsuits filed as a result of the original '69 Woodstock (I got this
bit of trivia from the latest copy of Relix, of all places). So I
guess it's not so 90's after all, eh?

re Dylan, just have to say I thought his band was incredible; taste,
subtlety, dynamics, they made almost every other act seem like a garage
band by comparison. Who are these guys?

a friend of mines wife got sidetracked on her way to her class reunion
and ended up at woodstock (missed reunion totally) ..she had a grate
time, heard only the south stage performers as that's where she
was camped, said people were grate, esp some folks from canada
camped close by them. she brought back some interesting newspapers from
NY detailing everything from Saugerties, Bethel and Freedom Fest, lots
of pictures, lots of articles including a funny one about hippie crack.
