396.0. "Dead-related stuff on the World Wide Web (WWW)?" by SAC::BARKER (Free the Ambridge One) Mon Feb 28 1994 09:17

I barely get time to be even readonly here nowadays but a big HI to
everyone I know/ who knows me.

I was wandering around the World Wide Web using XMOSAIC when I stumbled
across a load of Dead related pages including setlists, graphics etc. etc. As
is the usual way with the WWW I now can't find it again. Does anyone know the
URL that I latched onto?

If you don't know what the hell I'm talking about in the above
paragraph then I can provided an explanation if necessary. We now return you to
our scheduled programme.

Can anyone recommend a good book/class/seminar/tool for getting around
on the internet, WWW, etc. I bought The Whole Internet, from Orielly,
and its a little dry reading, I need something interactive. I know I
can telnet from my terminal, but I don't know how. My internet
expertise currently consists of signing on to conference mailing
lists, and E-mailing friends who have MCI mail or Gateways.

    Jeff

396.3TOOK::PECKARsleep tightTue Mar 01 1994 17:198
Well, actually, you probably can't telnet from your terminal, at least not
outside the easynet, unless you have a registered encryption key.

If you have access to a workstation, I'd reccomend installing xmosaic.

396.4STUDIO::IDEMy mind's lost in a household fog.Tue Mar 01 1994 17:4318
My cryptokey is on its way and I'll soon be able to telnet!

If you're on a VMS system, you'll need to have UCX installed to get to
the internet. Type "help ucx" and if it gives you a help message,
you're in luck. Note that UCX may not be installed on the whole
    cluster, just one machine.

If you're on a workstation, you can use Mosaic to navigate the
Internet. If not, Lynx works well. Unfortunately for me, I have to
use Lynx on a ws because I'm in a hidden area and my boot node doesn't
have UCX installed. Lynx is easy to use, I've never tried Mosaic.

There's an Internet notes conference which will point you to where you
can copy Lynx or Mosaic from.

Anyone else going to the World Wide Web Workshop in LJO on Thursday?

Hey Jeff;

Check out SOFBAS::INTERNET_TOOLS ... there're pointers to documentation in
there, including something titled "The Dummys' Big Guide to the Internet" (or
something like that ... no criticism of your intelligence implied, of course,
it's just one of those awfully cute titles, like "DOS for Dummies" etc. ;^)

Is it difficult to set up a home page? I'm clueless on how to start.

I attended the WWW Workshop yesterday. Most of it was over my head,
but I picked up a few things. For those of you who haven't had the
pleasure of being in a room full of software engineers, let me just say
. . . no, maybe I'd better hold my tongue. :-) OK, let me just say:
don't worry about what to wear to such a meeting.

WINTERLAND Cool screened T-shirts, $15. Toll-free order number.
http://www.mca.com/winterland/index.html

ABOUT WINTERLAND

Hey! We got shirts here. In the true rock and roll tradition, we've weaseled
our way through the parking lot of the WWW, with an armful of the newest (and
oldest) designs from the company that invented the t- shirt, Winterland
Productions. Actually, Winterland didn't invent t-shirts, but we probably were
the first company to put rock and roll artwork on t-shirts. For more than 20
years Winterland has made a living peddling t-shirts featuring many of the
biggest names in rock and roll at concert venues, t-shirt shops and music
stores all over the world. All those years ago Winterland got started by
screenprinting some t- shirts for the Grateful Dead. All these years later,
when you see a music t-shirt walking down the street, it probably came from
Winterland. Hell, some of the people who bought those original Grateful Dead
shirts are undoubtedly still walking around with those wasted relics. So
either wash that old tee or tune in to view the goods on WINTERLAND plugged in
and add a little horsepower to your wardrobe.

Here at ArtRock, we've got the goods which can evoke your best
rock 'n' roll memories with only a glance. Rock posters and
memorabilia for collectors of every persuasion, whether you think
rock 'n' roll means Jimi 'n' Janis or Iggy Pop and David Bowie,
or the Cure, Jane's Addiction, and Love Battery. We've got a
comprehensive, high quality collection of rock posters and related
artifacts spanning the ultra-psychedelia of the Haight-Ashbury
heyday, 70's supergroup bombast, the F-U pretensions of the surly
punk scene, new wave neurosis, late 80's underground, up through
the alternative rock of the fragmented 90's.

Our gallery and mail order house are located in the heart of San
Francisco, the place where rock fans first went wild over the
groovy, swirly, trippy renderings of poster art mavens Stanley
Mouse, Rick Griffin, Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoso, and Wes
Wilson. Our stock's full of A-1 collectibles from San Francisco
shows presented by the Family Dog at the Avalon Ballroom, and
Bill Graham at the Fillmore West and Winterland. We're the
publisher of silk-screen works by contemporary poster artist Frank
Kozik, and we carry prints of original art by Jerry Garcia and
the Cure's Robert Smith as well. A stable of posters celebrating
classic rock--along with books, t-shirts, concert handbills, tickets,
and other assorted rock 'n' rollabilia -- rounds out our top-notch
collection.

Almost all our inventory is limited edition, first-run prints, except
for enormously popular second and third run editions, as noted in
our catalogue (item numbers are marked with a dash followed by
the number of the printing, e.g. 000-2, 000-3, etc.) Check out our
catalogue, drop by our gallery, and listen to our stuff scream,
shout, and sing rock 'n' roll without making a sound.

Authenticity of Merchandise

Over the years ArtRock has painstakingly gathered vintage rock
memorabilia from the original artists, private collections, rare
warehouse finds and other reputable sources. Every effort is made
to research the printing history and to verify the authenticity of
the merchandise we sell.

You can (as I have done) use the "Save As..." function to save the page as
Postscript. I think I must have used Load to Local Disk also, because I
remember taking the Philly Spectrum map and gamma-correcting it in XV to

I read on the net last night that Donna Jean was
at the memorial service and funeral. I also read
an interview she did. When she first heard about
Jerry, she said the first thing she thought about
was us heads and she understood how hard it would
be for us. Said she had gone to see the Dead when
they played in Birmingham in the spring and that
the next day, Jerry called her and invited her
to his hotel room. She said they laughed and
talked about old times and that she saw no evidence
of "drug use". She said she was very glad that
he died while he was trying to get better and not
of an overdose - so that that wouldn't be the
emphasis now. Good positive interview - and, to
me, it showed me what classy people both Donna
	and Jerry are...

I checked it out couple of days ago.
My reaction was, as a test engineer always looking for chip specs, was:

It would be nice if the chip spec .PS files were online! I mean, geeze,
thats what I really want! Maybe also the .BSDL files for the chips with
JTAG - EV4, EV5. I've worked with Dilip Bhavar on the .BSDLs.

otherwise, not bad.

    re Josh...

apparently not all the docs are in a very web friendly format yet
(don't ask me the details, i don't know) but as the site grows
many more of them will be available though the web site...

    re Jeff...

    dont hold your breath... :^)

bringing this back to a more dead oriented note... i found a cool web
site for guitar players who want to pick up chords and lyrics for most
(but not all) of the songs... it was billed as "Jerry's songs" but
many are Phil and Bobby's... the URL for the chords and lyrics is

    http://www.vais.net/~fields/dead/list.html

just as in "kids won't dig it and if they did, thier parents wouldn't")

                     LIFE FOLLOWING THE DEAD

"If you get confused, just listen to the music play"

                                          By Joe Nickell

(This story was written to be a multi-media experience, but it's a damn
good story even without the images, audio, and video. If you have a slow
link or you don't have graphics capabilities, try the text only version.
If you choose to continue with the multi-media version, you really should
have Netscape 1.1N (or later) or a graphical browser that handles tables.

Apparently, this was a major topic of discussion at the most recent IETF
meeting in L.A. last week. The WWW has generated so much traffic, and so
many short-lived TCP connections across the net, that new and creative
means of improving performance to handle the added load, not to mention
the less-than-professional-quality coding practices of the browser
authors are the hotest topic amoung technical circles of the Internet
Engineering task force - things like caching, protocol enhancements and
persistent TCP connections are hot right now.
