298.0. "Any Requests?? New Dead Covers!" by MR4DEC::JHINE (Estimated Prophet) Thu Sep 10 1992 14:10

I thought that now would be the time to add my first official topic to
this ol' notes file. I was spurred by the cover discussion and would
like to add a discussion on songs that the Dead don't do, and never
have done, that might be cool to hear them play. I've thought of a
bunch over the years but thre's one I'm pretty psycho about. After
hearing the Two Rooms CD, and Bruce's version of Mad Man Across the
Water, I thought it would be really cool to hear Jerry sing it. The
piano jam in the middle is very reminiscent(sp?) of the Boston Garden
    shows in '91.

    Any Others??

Yeah, Marley was incredible.

My brother lent me a couple of videos that I really like a lot.
One is the Life of Bob Marley, the other a concert on the left coast.
Very interesting history. I didn't realize he was in an early 60's
band with Peter Tosh with some other guy, with the matching suits
and all that.

What a creative genious. The emotion in his music is just majic.

In Buffalo, when we heard :Same as it ever was" The screens cut to a
shot of Bobby singing it. Maybe they all were. The reason why it
stuck out in my mind was that it was a good shot of just Bobby singing

"This Land is Your Land" was suggested by yours truely. I think this is a
perfect song for the dead to cover as it sort of goes with the "dead"
scene.

This Land is Your Land was written as an answer to the song God Bless America.
GBA was the "military prudist" american song while TLIYL is the true american
song...

	i saw above me
	the endless skyway
	i saw below me

Yabbut, the rest of the verses (wish I could remember them, there's a
lot) make the first sound very cynical. Guthrie basically lists
America's ills, and there were a lot during the dustbowl/depression
days. I remember one started "as I was standing in line at the welfare
    office" or something similar.

Chuck Berry's "Living in the USA" is like that too.

Reading through the two cover song notes, I vote for more new
originals. What's the cover/original ratio? For Deadbase owners,
what's the ratio on Sunday afternoons when Jerry was a light
heavyweight and stood on the left side?

> originals. What's the cover/original ratio? For Deadbase owners,

Up to 1989, The dead have played 413 different tunes, 147 can be attributed to
at least one band member, or Robert Hunter, John Barlow, or McGannahan
Skjellyfetti. So, the actual ratio is 1 original for every 2.80952381 covers.

Also, that doesn't count any traditionals which the dead have really made
uniquely there own, like CR&S, Dark Hollow, On the Road again, Peggy-o etc...

Of course, this data is meaningless, since the sampling is from Deadbase IV
which, as we all know, is _way_ obsolete. :-)

> what's the ratio on Sunday afternoons when Jerry was a light

That info is in Deadbase III, not IV or V... (really)

Debess, that's not really off the subject. "This Land Is My Land" has
been suggested a number of times as an alternative to "The Star
Spangled Banner", and I couldn't agree more. I think it's a fine song
for a national anthem - one we can sing, and one we can be proud of.
I think Arlo would get a kick out of it too...

Didn't "This Land Is Your Land" originally have a verse, very rarely

a call for socialism?

I think that's an underlying idea of the song, anyway.

I kind of like the Star Spangled Banner, but for personal reasons,
rather than the imagery invoked by the song. Those reasons shall
remain obscure ;-) But remember, it was the US that was being
attacked at that point, and the central image is that we survived
the assault. Now whether we can survive the current assault on
our liberties remains to be seen. I'm not too sure I feel
"America the Beautiful" applies anymore, after what has been done
to the land. Of course there still are some beautiful areas out
there, but we certainly don't all live in harmony with the land.
This Land is Your Land, maybe.

I'm pretty sure (could be wrong) that America the Beautiful, the
music, is copied exactly from the British national anthem. It seems
there was a lot of that in Colonial America. Not many great composers

Ha! I had the foresight to look this up and hoped that someone would
ask so I could parade my knowledge of useless facts. I don't know
about AtB, but "The Star Spangled Banner" tune was lifted from a
then popular song called "To Anacreon in Heaven." At the Smithsonian
Museum of American History they display the original flag that flew
over Fort McHenry (? maybe Sumter) and inspired Francis Scott Key to
write the poem. They also play a version of the song as it would have
sounded ca. 1812, with a much different tempo and phrasing.

Despite all this research, I forgot to find out who started the War of
    1812. Anyone know?

Nope..you may be thinking of "My country tis of thee" which is a musical
mirror of "God save the Queen". The lyrics for ATB were written by a woman
who's name escapes me now (not sure who wrote the music). The first stanza
of ATB was written after the author had been to the top of Pikes Peak in
Colorado and she witnessed the beauty of the mountains and the waves of grain
in the plains of Eastern Colorado (before Colorado Springs became a large
   town.

In 1812, Britain had been at war with France for over 20 years
(discounting a few month lull while the Treaty of Amiens held in 1806). The
was was consuming much of the resources of both countries, and Britain, which
depended heavily on its navy was short of sailors. They developed the practice
of stopping American ships on the high seas and conscripting any sailors they
could plausibly claim had once been British. "Once an Englishman, always an
Englishman."

Using this as an excuse, and figuring that Britian would be too busy
with France to do much about it, some congress-critters looked at this as a
chance to grab Canada away from Britain, and declared war.

The U.S. Navy did pretty well against the Royal Navy, but the land
battles were less sucessfull. Notably, the British invaded Washington, and
burned the White House. After two years of this, both sides got tired of it,
and Britain agreed to stop impressing U.S. sailors (their war against Napoleon
was wrapping up), and the U.S. agreed to leave Canada alone. Both sides claimed
victory.

Yep - Dead and Dylan, the Santa Monica studio outtakes. There's a nice
mandolin on that cover, too. Bob (the "original" one ;-) : Zimmy) sings.
They all also do "Oh Boy" (by Buddy Holly/Hardin/whoever-the-heck-wrote-it!)

All this cover-age has got me wonderin'. I'd be curious to see a graph (crude
ASCII OK) charting time (by year) horizontally, and # of songs in repertoire
(by covers/originals) vertically. I'd expect a big jump in 1973/74 and flat

Didn't know where else to put this. Jimmy Buffet's new cd is out and he
does a cover of Uncle John's Band. Sounds pretty good with some steel
    drums.
